Moderator’s note: I have merged two threads on this topic, one from the Parent Forum, started by eadad, and one in the Parent Cafe, started by ldmom06. The posts then get slotted chronologically and so may appear a little out of sync for the first 15 posts. Now the discussion and sympathies can be expressed in one spot.

I am very saddened to report that Eve Carson, UNC Student Body President, member of my son’s Morehead Scholar class, and also one of his closest friends since Finalist weekend was identified today as the victim of a shooting near the campus several days ago. Please keep Eve, her family and all of her large circle of friends in your prayers.

Oh my gosh, that is so tragic! She must have been a remarkable young woman.

This comes right on the heels of that freshman at Auburn being shot and dying. I cannot imagine the grief these families must be enduring. My prayers go out to them.

Yes ag54, I just posted on the thread eadad started in the UNC forum. THis another senseless tragedy, and a terrible loss for both college communities, as well as for Georgia, as Eve Carson was from Athens, Ga, home of UGA. My deepest comdolences to the extended UNC and Auburn communities.

Both these stories…at UNC and Auburn are so unfathomable and so utterly tragic. Both are accomplished promising beautiful young women. How one person can take the life of another, I have no idea. To me, this is one of the most tragic kinds of death and loss. Senseless and at the hand of another. I don’t know how either family can go on. And it is very scary for all.

Prayers to all who knew these lovely young ladies.

eadad has started a thread in the UNC Forum as well.

My d is so upset. Chapel Hill is truly this little idyllic place and such a crime there is unimaginable. Please pray for her family and loved ones. What a tragic loss of a wonderful person.

I am so sorry for unc’s loss. I have a d in college and this is heartbreaking.
Add to it the Auburn female student found yesterday and it makes you treasure every momemt with your child.

God Bless the families of these young ladies.

My son just called to tell me. Here is the email sent out to the students.
Dear Carolina Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am so sorry to tell you that Chapel Hill Police have identified the
victim of this week’s shooting as Eve Carson, our student body
president, trustee, wonderful person and great friend. We are deeply
saddened and numb with grief.

I would like for us all to gather this afternoon on Polk Place at 3 p.m.
to remember Eve and to grieve together. We will plan a full memorial
service at a later time. For now, it is important that we pause,
contemplate our loss and give each other support.

We encourage students, faculty or staff who feel they need assistance to
contact the Office of the Dean of Students (966-4042) or Counseling and
Wellness Services (966-3658). Counselors will be available at the Upendo
Lounge at the Student Academic Services Building and Room 2518 A/B in
the new addition at the Carolina Union until 11 p.m. this evening
(Thursday, March 6, 2008). Resident advisors in campus housing and
Granville Towers are also available to be of assistance and support.

I know how difficult it will be to begin to comprehend something so
tragic. Please, as you gather your thoughts and prayers, think of Eve’s
parents, family and friends.

I hope you will join us this afternoon on Polk Place.

Sincerely,

James Moeser

mkm - According to ldgirl, this occurred about 1/2 mile from her dorm which is on Battle Lane. In a very nice part of town … Hillcrest near Davie Circle off East Franklin. (Actually most of Chapel Hill is an extremely nice part of town) I’m trying to picture it…are you familiar?

I am so very sorry. As a mom whose daughter recently lost her best friend in a tragic accident, I urge you to be there for your son, especially when he wants to talk about her. I think just having someone to listen to helps a lot.

Idmom, I know we looked at an apartment with son before he transferred there near or on Davie Circle. As I remember, it was a nice area and seemed quiet and peaceful.

Moderator Note: I have moved this new post/thread to our existing thread on this topic as I had previously already merged two prior threads here. If possible, before posting about a news story, see if there are any existing threads on that topic.

UNC in chapel Hill is mourning the loss of a great student. Senior Eve carson was shot to death about 5:00 a.m. yesterday, until today she had not been identified but was described as a white girl age 18-25, 5-5, 120 lbs, and blonde hair. Today she was identified and the campus and community is in shock. Although we mourn the death of any young person, this person was one of the best. As an OUT of state student Eve was elected as Student Body president at UNC…that says a lot given the low number of OSS at UNC. She was a Moorehead scholar and volunteered at local schools and abroad. She was what we would want any of out sons and daughters to be…totally engaged in the University life and the surrounding community.

Investigation is on going…she died a violent death. With students there myself, I feel so badly for those close friends and her family. To get that phone call.

Two victims near college campuses in two days, one at Auburn, a Marietta, Georgia student and this one from Athens, Georgia–both gunned down. Police are investigating to see if they are linked. Just in case, we all should remind our kids to be extra careful.

Hug your kids. Tell them you love them every day. Live life to the fullest like Eve did. She was and is an inspiration to many.

WASHINGTON: Police in Durham, North Carolina, apprehended a suspect in the murder of Indian PhD student Abhijit Mahato even as the young man’s body was sent by road to New York to be flown to India on an Air India flight.

A chance encounter involving a police officer who was trying to pull over four men in a car for a traffic violation led to a high speed chase culminating in the arrests of William Dozia Smith, 20, Stephen Lavance Oates Jr, 19, and two juveniles, both 14.

While they were held on suspicion of being involved in a spate of armed robberies in the area, police later charged Oates with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in last Friday’s slaying of Duke University’s Indian doctoral scholar Abhijit Mahato.

Oates reportedly has a criminal record going back to two years of break-ins and assault on a female. He is scheduled to appear in court later Thursday. The arrest came even as two officials from the Indian Embassy in Washington DC went to Duke University to reassure the Indian student community and arrange for the transfer of Mahato’s body to India.

Air India will fly the body from JFK on Thursday and it is expected to reach Ranchi on January 26.

Meantime, Duke University has scheduled a memorial service, which the University officials called a ‘‘celebration of his life’’ later in the week at the Duke chapel.

The murders of two other Indian PhD scholars, Chandrasekhar Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam of Louisiana State University still remain unsolved.

When we think about this year , the Emerson girl, the Duke boy, the Auburn student and now this one…not to mention the shootings at the campus at southern illinois and virginia tech…it has NOT been a good year for our students. This craziness HAS to end.
