UNC Transfer fall 2019

Kenan-Flagler does do interviews for transfer applicants

Thought it was UNC transfer in genera, but good to know. Yes, it was for KF.

I had one pop up on my checklist but it was an error on UNC’s part.

Did you get the business interview / questions @Mcunn226?

I did, even though I didn’t apply to business. It showed up in my status, but not my checklist (correction). I prepared myself for it and when I started the video the question was regarding KF. I contacted admissions and they admitted it was an error and I would be given full consideration for the major I applied.

I know this is probably 2 weeks early, but if you are accepted and it’s not financially feasible to pay the $200 enrollment deposit, they do offer a “defer for financial aid” option where basically you do not have to pay anything to confirm your enrollment. This is intended for students who filled out the FAFSA and know they are going to receive aid of some kind from Carolina based on their EFC.

In addition, if you are accepted and know you wish to attend Carolina without a doubt, accept their offer of admission and confirm enrollment as soon as you can. The reason I say this is because Fall ‘19 class registration for transfers should begin about a week after transfer decisions are released. Returning students begin registering April 2nd and many classes (especially gen eds and gateway courses) fill up rather quickly, so new transfers are already at a registration disadvantage. There are some seats in select classes reserved for transfers but not near as many as those for incoming freshmen. Of course, if you can’t get into many courses for your major, you can contact the head of your department to request waitlist positions and they will work with you.

I don’t mean to give anyone something extra to worry about as fall registration is probably the last thing on your mind, but I wanted to provide you with some info as someone who went through it. I was unable to get a fair amount of classes I had planned to take and had to be on the lookout to check Connect Carolina to see which courses were open. Thankfully, transfers are allowed an extra year beyond their initial expected graduation date.

Thanks for the insight.

Alright cool,

Thank you for the info.

@HSstudentNC

I received my financial aid package from my backup choice today. On one hand I’m relieved because I can definitely afford that school now, but on the other I’m still so stuck on Chapel Hill. I keep trying to prepare myself for bad news, but I don’t think it is working. ???

@HSstudentNC yeah, I know I will need to take Calculus my first semester and I’m just hoping that I can get into a class! Well, first I’m hoping to be accepted.

Speaking of financial aid packages, I may have mentioned this before but UNC gives out laptop grants (CCI grant) to students who are eligible. This year the the grant covered the Lenovo Thinkpad L380. You can also use the grant as a cash value credit towards the purchase of a more expensive laptop through UNC Student stores.

Pretty nervous about this…

I know nobody really knows how to chance people, but I’d appreciate if someone gave it a try…

Current School: NC State
Major: Undecided
Year: Freshman
College GPA: 4.0 (Only 15 credit hours, but have taken calc/chem so)
Highschool GPA: 3.8 unweighted
SAT: 1330

Essays were pretty trash since I did them right before the deadline… Applied last year, didn’t get in. I still want to go to UNC, I’ll be heartbroken if I don’t get in.

I actually have a friend who transferred to Carolina from State this past year and then went right back to the business school at State this spring.

I’m not an admissions staff member so my opinion doesn’t mean much in terms of saying chances. I think having completed just 15 hours may be a small disadvantage because Carolina statistically tends to accept and ultimately enroll more juniors or other students with higher credits earned. Personally (and I will leave a disclaimer that this is not factual, just my take on it), I believe they ultimately want to see transfers with proven success at the college level. 1 semester is not a lot for them to judge your college success on in my opinion, but a 4.0 is still impressive for your first semester at State. However, if they don’t believe your college stats or extracurriculars are enough to base their decision on, high school stats/extracurriculars will still be big factors in their decision. Your SAT is above the average enrolled transfer which helps you out. I don’t know what courses you took in high school nor your grades in these classes, so I can’t say how impressive or not impressive the 3.8 unweighted is, but it is a good GPA nonetheless.

What concerns me is that mentioned your essays were trash. What I believe allows everyone to stand out and become more than just a number or stat are the essays. I think Carolina’s holistic approach to admissions considers the essays an important part as well after academics/extracurriculars. @UNCLetMeIn

Number crunching, for the hell of it:

From last year’s transfer thread. Looks like about 22 people chimed in with an acceptance. Their college GPAs ranged from 3.57 to 4.0 with an average of 3.863.

5 people were rejected. Ranged 3.8-4.0 with an average of 3.892

4 were waitlisted. 3.4-4.0, average 3.728

All this does is prove there’s no magic bullet.

@Mcunn226 I was literally just reading last year’s transfer thread. It’s tough to find a correlation between stats and decisions. Some people were admitted with worse stats, others rejected with better stats. I wonder if this goes to show how much UNC values the non-graded aspects of the application. Regardless, you’re right; there is no magic bullet.

I guess GPA’s aren’t their main focus, strong essays and letter of recommendations can really help

I would figure as much. The bad part about that is that it’s hard to gauge how strong your essays are.

Extracurriculars come to mind, too. I feel like those are important to the admissions team. I worry about this; I have not gotten involved in college as much as I was in high school. My class load/schedule make it difficult to find availability to involve myself in clubs/volunteer organizations, and I spend a lot of my free time at my job to help keep up with expenses.

Hopefully my high school extracurriculars and my minimal activities outside of work/class will still do the trick! I would want to get much more involved at UNC if I were to go.

I appreciate the input guys. It appears the transfer admissions are a lot more “holistic” (whatever that means) than the first year applications. I just hope that luck is on my side, and that they give me a chance. @Mcunn226 @HSstudentNC

Hey guys!
I have been reading these threads for a very long time now and was thinking of sharing my stats to see my possible chances. I know that the decision dates are coming up soon but I am super worried as I couldn’t really compare my situation to other threads.
Let me start with my story. I am an American citizen but both my parents were originally Syrian of Turkish origins (lol). They were later naturalized and got the American citizenship. I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and attended an international school there where I met a lot of diverse people and learned about different points of views and some of their experiences. English is my second language, with Arabic being first but I learned them about 2 years apart so I am fluent in both. I am a Muslim and wear the scarf (I didn’t mention it in the essay but probably should have). I moved to NC July 1st of 2017. I applied to UNC Chapel Hill last year as a rising freshman but didn’t realize that you had to reside in the US a whole year before APPLYING. UNC Chapel Hill and the other universities I applied to all considered me as an out of state student for the decision making process but I did end up paying in state tuition as it did mark a year by the time the tuition money was due. I applied to NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte, and ECU. I got accepted at ECU within 2 days of applying. This gave me hope of actually going to a university rather than taking a gap year because of the whole out of state situation. Then I got in to UNC Charlotte and was waitlisted then rejected at NC State. UNC Chapel Hill rejected me as well as the out of state pool makes it much more difficult to get in. I applied as a biology major with the whole pre-med track in mind but I truly didn’t want to do that but just want to try out my parents wishes. I ended up going to UNC Charlotte and then switching majors into what I loved the most.
Intended career: Forensic chemistry
Major: Chemistry with a possible minor in mathematics or criminal justice (based on what is required in what universities)
High School GPA: 3.96 UW and 4.24 W. My school overseas didn’t offer an honor courses and only offered about 10 AP classes and I only took AP bio and didn’t pass the final AP exam so it didn’t count as credits towards university. When I moved to the US for my senior year I stacked up on all honor coursed to boost up my GPA as much as I can and show universities I am up for the challenge. I would have taken APs but needed specific classes to take to graduate in time so I wasn’t able to.
Current University GPA: 3.769 for the first semester with 13 credit hours and I am currently taking 16 credits for a total of 29 (probably being considered as a freshman transfer).
ACT: 20. THE ONLY PART I AM EXTREMELY WORRIED ABOUT. Since I studied overseas they never really mentioned the ACT and the SAT and many Arab universities require different entrance exams so I took it my senior year and wasn’t ready at all.
I did really well in my University English Writing class and got that professor to write me a recommendation. I also got my chemistry professor to write me another recommendation and my old high school’s teacher that I knew very well to write me my last recommendation.
I hope that although I did poorly on the ACT the English recommendation would possibly prove that I was unprepared but still with a low score I was still able to make a 96% or an A in that class.
I hope that this year I have a higher chance of getting in because:

  1. I would count as an in state instead of an out of state
  2. Transfer rates are said to be larger than normal freshman rates
  3. Biology majors is more competitive to get in than possibly chemistry (not sure but I think it is)
  4. University GPA would prove my ACT otherwise
Sorry this was really long and I hope you guys would chance me

While your HS and college GPAs are laudable, that ACT score might be too low even as a transfer student. Since you are applying as a rising sophomore your high school record is still put into the mix. The 25th percentile for incoming freshman is a 28. According to their stats, only 82 Freshman were admitted with an ACT (or equivalent) below 25.
