@penntousc yea, that is what I did. I only have 200 words but already reached to 1250 characters.
My essays are 1180 characters and 212 words (5.56c/w) and 1242 characters and 216 words (5.75c/w).
It’s an exercise in self-editing. Say more with less. Get creative with the word to save some characters. The admissions officers are looking at tens of thousands of essays and just don’t have the time to actually read 10,000 words per applicant.
Hi! I am a current Sophomore applying to transfer as a Junior for Fall 2019
Here are my stats:
High school:
Junior Marshal, 4.7 GPA
Freshman Year:
First Semester (Wake Tech)
I was accepted to NC State as a Spring Admit, so in order to stay ahead I went to a local community college for a semester (I am most worried about this, as I do not know how they will treat a semester’s worth of CC credits and I was rejected after applying to transfer as a Sophomore).
GPA: 3.75 (14 hrs)
Second Semester (NC State)
GPA 3.7 (16 hrs)
Major: English and Comparative Literature
Sophomore Year:
GPA: 3.8 (25-28 hrs)
I took a course at Chapel Hill and will be transferring with 70-74 credits in hopes of making a smooth transition.
EC: College radio, student film society, University Ambassador, employment at both College library and local art collective
Plus, I have an amazing academic recommendation letter from an NC State professor who does research at UNC, and a personal one from a high school teacher who graduated from UNC. And, if using a high school recommendation is not a good idea as a Junior transfer, a separate NC State professor offered to write me one.
Chances? Suggestions? I am mostly worried about “proving myself,” as the main reason I was rejected for Sophomore transfer was because I did not have enough to show, being that I had done one semester at community college and one here at State.
I think your chance of getting in is high since you are in state and reapplying which show your determination. For the recommendation, I did recommend to use a separate NC State professor who can write you a personal one.
Best of luck in the upcoming months!
Please, CHANCE ME!
I’m currently a freshman at UNCW, wishing to transfer as a Sophomore, majoring in Economics. Here are my stats:
High School:
4.3 GPA
22 ACT
1130 SAT
EC:
National Honor Society
Junior Civitan-Sergeant at Arms
President of Student Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
College:
4.0 GPA
26 Credits (at the end of first semester)
EC:
Entrepreneurship Club
Feeling Good Living Better Club
I’m applying to the College of Arts & Sciences as a sophomore, and hopefully applying to the Business School. I’m aware that ACT/SAT are still a big factor when applying as a sophomore transfer, but I would like to know if I have a chance! Thanks guys.
@cellardoor your chances look great. I agree in getting a second recommendation from a State professor.
@hazelbagel I think they would like to see more extracurriculars. I would say more extracurriculars and a really strong essay, you might have a shot.
Hello, I am looking forward to applying to UNC for the fall of 2019, and would love some honest input from fellow students.
Stats: Lower income, Hispanic female
Sophmore at UNCW GPA: 3.42
Major GPA: 4.0
High school GPA: 3.2
Transferable credits: 71
Major: Double in Economics and Political Science
EC: Office assistant for the History Department, member of a bipartisan political club and college dems.
*I also received a glowing recommendation letter from my macro professor, who received his PhD from UNC in the past 4 years.
Regarding my GPA, I struggled with my science classes required for gen ed my freshman year (I got 2 Cs). I know I’m no where near as competitive as other applicants, but I have made significant improvements in the past two semesters. Any input would be appreciated, and good luck to everyone!
I’m really terrified my 3.4/3.6 HS GPA is gonna really really hurt me on my app. I don’t know if my 4.0 college GPA on 13 credits will matter much at all
My SAT is 1400 so it’s decently good, but I’m really worried esp since I’m applying as a sophomore transfer
I posted a few weeks back but I’ll post my main message again. I was accepted this past fall to Carolina as a Sophomore EXSS major. Once I received my Associate in Science in summer of 2018, I was given junior status at Carolina. I’m not going to put my high school or college stats out here but if anyone has questions regarding the whole application process, my experiences so far after a semester here, what I wish I would have known or any other general transfer questions, feel free to message me so I don’t clutter this thread responding to people individually.
@HSstudentNC I haven’t posted enough to be a junior member, so therefore I can’t message you. But I’m really struggling on my essays. It’s difficult for me to figure out a proper structure with so little space to work with. My high school and college stats are good enough, but I really need these essays to be done well to secure admission. I was rejected last year and another rejection letter will hurt terribly.
Well, I just submitted my app. Good luck and God bless to all!
@123nai123 A 4.0 on 13 credits will be beneficial since it shows you can handle college work. What is worrying though is since it is so little credits, they won’t know if it is an accurate reflection since you didn’t take a heavy course load. I recommend getting some really solid essays and recommendations.
Hello. I wanted to know my chances of getting into chapel hill as a community college transfer student. I would like to go in as a junior.
GPA: 3.7
In state
Extracurriculars: President of the North Carolina Community College Student Goverment Association, SGA President at local community college, PIO for phi theta kappa academic honor society, member of the North Carolina Student Leadership Development Program, Graduate of the Fountain-Luria Student Leadership Academy, Internship with congressman Mark Walker.
Major: exercise science and sports medicine (pre physical therapy)
I was homeschooled.
First generation college student.
Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
My application is IN as of last night! Good luck, everyone!
Now it’s time for us to parse and overanalyze every iota of information!
Did anyone else just get an email?
Hi, I just wanted to know my chances as a transfer. I will be a sophomore next year and am applying to Kenan-Flagler with the College as my second choice. I am currently at a top 50 private university in the business school with an undeclared major. I had a 3.85 GPA first semester, and I’m in a bunch of clubs on campus. Had pretty decent essays and letter of recs. High school GPA was 3.7, and SAT was 1450. Never applied to UNC before and submitted my stuff on 1/23.
@Mcunn226 I did not receive an email yesterday! What was it about?
75% sure it’s just a promo email but…
Dear XXXXX,
At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, you could be conducting nationally funded research, performing onstage with a Grammy Award-winning band, and cheering at a national championship game. Here, the exciting future that you’ve imagined for yourself can begin.
We can’t wait to introduce you to our community - check out our website, visit our campus, and connect with our students on social media. We welcome about 800 transfer students to campus each year, and over a third of them come to us from a North Carolina community college.
If you’re ready to join us at Carolina, we hope you’ll apply. Our transfer application deadline is February 15.
We look forward to getting to know you!
Sincerely,
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
P.S. We’re writing because we’re looking for bright students like you, and you’ve been identified as an outstanding student by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Just had something unexpected come up with my application that kinda changes it, so a chance me would be appreciated!
I’m going to be a junior transfer now as opposed to a sophomore because of some credits that I had forgotten about from HS.
HS GPA: 3.4 UW, 3.7 W
SAT: 1400
College GPA: 3.84 (will have 66 credits upon enrollment if I get in)
Recs and essays are very very solid, I am really confident in them.
ECs: Lots of HS leadership ECs and some involvement at my CC (economics club and political activism stuff)
