UNC's Carolina Global Launch decisions

Did anyone get a decision today? I applied three weeks ago (2/7), so I was really hoping I might hear back today, but now I’m just really hoping for sometime next week…

Has anyone gotten in since last tuesday the 25th?

I just got into Ireland global launch!!! I applied 2/7, got the email at 4:30  SO excited!!! GO HEELS!

@whoknows2024 Congrats!

That’s great! Congrats!

@whoknows2024 you may want to get into the group feed that @Caidawn027 started …email at caidawn027@gmail.comto get in. and my daughter got into Ireland her Instagram is @annehouston_ she is in Raleigh, NC

Does anyone know what would happen if the program was cancelled because of study abroad restrictions from the Coronavirus?

I called the office today and will post any updates to the blog.

My daughter was selected for Ireland - they told her they still plan to do the program and if something happens they will handle it individually as far as working with the students to get their work in.

@DHRaleigh Thanks. What do you mean get their work in? As in if study abroad is cancelled for Fall? @carsonelmpicard Which blog? Admissions blog?

My son has narrowed it down to this opportunity and another, but is very, very interested and leaning to go to Scotland. Haven’t committed yet because of everything going on. I’m hesitant (that’s the lawyer in me) in that I see nothing in the paperwork that covers this scenario. Meaning what happens if Fall study abroad is cancelled? It looks to be regular study abroad paperwork where the student is already fully admitted/has already been attending UNC, and not where study abroad was a part of a conditional acceptance. Did I miss it? I’ve tried to hold off calling to ask, because I know they are overwhelmed, so was wondering if anyone else has been in contact and what they were told. I will contact them too, but was wondering about everyone else. Thanks!

I have the same questions. Is it possible that they would be admitted for the fall semester since they were first placed on the waiting list?

@H20resqdogs and @Momoftarheel I really wish I knew. I talked to one dad today here in Raleigh whose daughter was accepted into the Scotland program. He had contacted them and they said that if they didn’t send kids abroad there would be other options, such as online learning or community college. In other words, they wouldn’t enroll right away. And my daughter emailed and that’s sort of the answer she got as well. In both conversations, there was no mention of enrolling for the fall.

My daughter has not committed yet - her mother and I think she should but she is waiting on one more school and wants to see what all her options are. I suspect from what they told her, and the other dad, is that they would honor the commitment to taking the students for second semester.

But I don’t know on fall semester. I assume that, for example, a student could enroll in another school for fall and then just move to UNC for the spring. For example, our daughter was accepted to Appalachian State, in the same system, so in theory I would think she could go there for the fall and then move over to UNC.

And to @H20resqdogs specific question on the paperwork, I suspect you are right. I’m not a lawyer but the language did seem like the usual language you would see in a contract with a student who is already enrolled. I don’t remember anything about how some international event (war, terrorist attack, pandemic) would impact their enrollment at UNC.

Like you, I would love to know more, and I truly hope this works out. Seems like an amazing opportunity.

@DHRaleigh Thanks for sharing. Son was also accepted into APP and some other UNC system schools so I could see that happening as well.

I’m curious too, if anyone who has committed already has heard any other kind of update. I doubt it, but was curious.

@H20resqdogs @Momoftarheel I had a helpful discussion yesterday with UNC admissions. They said they plan for Carolina Global Launch to go forward and wouldn’t have to cancel it until the sometime in the summer. So they have some time on this. UNC is working on contingency plans in case that happens but nothing firm as of yet.

UNC said 14 people have accepted Ireland and more for Scotland and they expect both programs to have at least 25 students. I suspect my daughter will accept for Ireland but she is waiting to hear from one more school and wants to weigh her options.

The good news for her is she has time, and the Carolina rep was great about saying UNC wants to make sure each student makes the best decision for them. As he said, Carolina will honor its offer and it’s now up to the students. Who knows what will happen if Carolina has to cancel the Global Launch this year, but it sounded like they will do all they can (probably online classes but who knows) to work with the students for the best outcome.

@DHRaleigh Thanks so much for the update!!

Thanks for the info!! Is the contract worded that if students were unable to go we would be reimbursed for the cost for the study abroad portion of the program?

@Momoftarheel That’s a good question and I don’t know the answer to that. I would assume that if our students accept Global Launch and pay the money but then it is canceled and, say, online is offered we’d get the money back but I did not ask that specifically.

We are really unsure how to proceed. With everything happening I could really see the program impacted for the fall. My D really wants to get to know people and make friendships her freshman year. I really wish they would honor waiting list spots for the kids who were accepted but that doesn’t sound like something they want to do.

Our daughter decided she is going to go to UNC and do Global Launch. She really hopes it works out and wants to go to Ireland. But her bottom line is she wants to go to Carolina.

On Friday I called two other schools where she was also accepted and explained her situation — they both said they would take her for a semester if Ireland doesn’t work out. I was impressed by how helpful they were.

It’s a crazy time and my daughter definitely would much rather go to college in the fall and get on with it but if the program is canceled and she goes somewhere else for a semester it will be OK.

Am I correct that we would still have to pay the full amount by May 15th and then see what happens?
