Sutter Health and Santa Clara University to Launch the Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine .
Funded in part by a $175 million gift from Mark and Mary Stevens, it will be the first new medical school in the San Francisco Bay Area in more than a century.
If you were in my position, would you prefer SCU or CWRU based on the medical school announcement? I understand this is just an announcement and not a certainty (especially with the opening scheduled for 2031). I am requesting advice from the members of this incredible forum on whether choosing to stay at SCU would materially change my medical school acceptance chances. I only have a few hours left to make my final decision!

There seems to be a lot of DO and MD schools going up. I hope they don’t get to a point of over supply and less selectivity.
Your chances of getting accepted to medical school are not going to be based on the undergrad college you attend. I think this has been said before.

Based on your thorough review of pre-med services, I’d still lean towards CWRU
There may be ways to do a co-op for a semester at the hospital or to volunteer, to shadow or to do research during the summer. I’d expect expanded opportunities which may be well timed for you.
Unless you can afford four years of med school after CWRU, I would change my undergrad. You noted $50k with loans was what you can pay so I have no idea how you will afford CWRU and med school. I disagreed with your logic in making the choice but it’s your choice so I congratulated you.
You should have a budget without loans (not with loans) for undergrad and choose a school that meets that cost because if you can’t afford med school, your undergrad decision is irrelevant.
And I don’t see any of these schools giving you any advantage over another. And SCU won’t have an admissions process established yet.
Btw it doesn’t say - that I can see - is this an MD or DO school?

My parents said they will fully fund my undergraduate degree at CWRU or SCU without any need for loans. They will also most likely fund medical school, though I might need some loans since my younger sibling will be starting college at that time. However, a decision on medical school funding will be made in four years, I need do well at my premed
I didn’t find any public info about the degree offered MD and/or DO.

The Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine @Sutter Health will be an MD school, though it has not yet even applied for applicant status at the LCME.
While the news is very exciting, the application process can be long (5 years is pretty typical from announcement to preliminary accreditation, although BYU will manage it in under 3 years…) and is fraught with many road bumps. Looks like they haven’t developed a strategic plan yet or hired a founding dean to guide the process. There’s a long, long way to go before a med school will happen. That includes building a new home hospital for the med school.
I don’t think that attending SCU will have any material effect on whether the OP will be considered competitive for admission to the new med school.
Adcomms are going to seek out the absolute best candidates they can find who fit the mission of the school. Remember that CA produces a HUGE number of med school applicants and that adding another 50 or 100 med school seats is a drop in the bucket.
When CNU opened, it was absolutely flooded with applications from CA residents who wanted to stay in CA, despite ithe many administrative and accreditation issues CNU had and its complete lack of financial aid for incoming med students. (CNU does not participate in the federal student loan program so its students aren’t eligible for federal loans to help pay the estimated $110-120K/year COA and cannot participate in any scholarship for service or loan forgiveness programs.)

Lindsay Mazotti, M.D., chief medical officer of medical education and science at Sutter Health is the planning dean of the School of Medicine.
It appears that Sutter Health already acquired real estate (existing 8 story buildings) for the new Sutter West Santa Clara Medical Center that is expected to host 292 bed hospital. Not sure if they have to build a new building for medical school (there is an existing building at the the specified address).
Thank you for sharing insights on accreditation process with LCME. I couldn’t find specific date/year for the new medical school to enroll students.
And you won’t see such a date…as they have not started their process for accreditation…yet.
