Is The Bahamas an underrepresented country in terms of admission to elite schools?
It depends upon the college. However, few colleges (if any) will admit a student from the Bahamas at the expense of a more qualified applicant from Antigua and Barbuda as an example. AO’s want to admit the best class possible, not stick pins on a map, IMO.
I am dubious about the concept of an “underrepresented country.”
The Bahamas represent about 0.005% of the world population. “Diverse” colleges have about 10% international students. So we’d expect about 0.0005% of its student body to be from the Bahamas. A typical university may have 10,000 undergraduate students. That means we’d expect about 0.05 students from the Bahamas. That rounds to zero.
Consider this: if a college enrolled a single student from the Bahamas, the Bahamas would be over-represented, statistically speaking.
The Caribbean in general in well represented at elite universities. Islands such as Jamaica average approximately 10-20 admits per year. From my experience the Bahamas usually has around 5 admits per year at many top schools. The list of underrepresented countries from the Western Hemisphere at top US schools include Venezuela, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, French Guiana and Suriname. - Admissions Track
