I think an easier question would be which schools DO hold full dance auditions!

At my Chicago Unifieds the only school that had a room large enough for us to actually dance in was the CMU audition.
At Point Park we danced in a hotel room, and it was a real ballet audition, not like the fake little ballet at the CMU audition, but a real combination and some hard moves in a hotel room.
I’m pretty sure CCM and UMich also had dance auditions.

I’m not sure you can use last year as a reference. The Palmer House was undergoing renovations last year and the auditions took place in actual rooms with the furniture removed. Some of the rooms were very cramped and I know some of the schools did not hold their dance audition (that they normally would have conducted) for this reason. Again, it is best to check audition requirements on each school’s website. Some schools have different requirements for “on campus” and “off campus”, but the school’s website would be the best way to find out.

NMR…I don’t have the definitive answer but I had one client do a walk in for PSU in LA and there was no dance audition on site and that year (the one before the last cycle), there was also a CCer whose D auditioned in Chicago for PSU and had no dance audition there either. In BOTH cases, these kids were asked to then come for a second audition/callback on campus! In my view, that defeats the purpose of Unifieds. I believe they didn’t have the entire class selection team at these two sites ,nor the dance audition and required the callback phase on campus which as you know, at the last minute, mid -winter, would be hard to figure into an audition-rich season/schedule as well would be an unexpected expense. I do not know if PSU has changed this since that year but I would hope that they have (not require a student to then come to campus). I realize in NYC, they do the full audition and kids like your D and one of my D’s friends who did the NYC Unifieds another year, got into PSU from Unifieds in NYC with no requirement to come to campus. That wasn’t the case for the two I spoke with from LA and Chicago in terms of the process for PSU.

Penn State does not (or did not) have a dance audition in Chicago. UMich and CMU both had ballrooms in the Palmer House for their dance calls. I didn’t audition for any of them so I can’t be sure, but I think CCM, BoCo, and Roosevelt did as well (though I’m pretty sure they were all off-site - the first two in other hotels/studios and the latter on campus, which is all of 2 blocks away).

I talked to Paula Whelan at PSU last year and she said that they would not again be asking kids who auditioned offsite for the program to come to campus for callbacks. (Penn State did have a big dance call at NYC Unifieds.) If I were a kid auditioning this winter/spring, I would definitely ask about this. But Paula gave me the impression that that was a one time thing.

Yes, at Chicago Unifieds, Roosevelt held their auditions at their site. The dance audition was held on Sunday and the singing/monologue portion of the audition was by appointment Mon, Tues or Wed.

NMR, hopefully they have changed it. This was in the 2006-2007 cycle. My guess is that they did not get all whom they called back to come to campus and it did not go over well. It was even discussed here on CC at the time (who knows if that got back to them?). I’m glad they have changed it. On the other hand, it is odd that they have dance on campus and in NYC and obviously care about that aspect of the audition but do not have that portion at the other sites and so not every applicant has done the same thing.

My D was from 2006-2007 cycle and is at in the MT BFA at PSU. Because of the possibility of having to go there anyway last minute, she chose to audition onsite at the campus instead of at Chicago Unifieds. However, during that cycle kids in LA were not asked to come to the campus. I know of a few who got in without the dance audition from then. I would say that since dance is an equally strong component of the program along with voice and acting, that if a candidate is a strong dancer and has PSU at the top end of the list, he or she would be well served to go to NYC or PSU to audition as they no longer ask you to come dance there to my knowledge.
I work at a performing arts high school in Las Vegas. We host the Feb Unifieds through our theatre department. It is one audition for all schools in attendance at one time for theatre and portfolio review for tech students. We are starting a seperate program called the Las Vegas National Performing Arts Auditions. They will be held the weekend of Sat/Sun Nov 1 & 2, 2008. This will be auditions for programs in theatre, technical theatre, and dance. There is a small fee ($50) to register and guarantee an audition spot. We are starting this program to allow students more opportunities in the fall of senior year to look at colleges of many levels and “shop around” and have more time to prepare for later additions, increase GPA, test scores etc that they may need if they identify a college that is or was not on their aplication list. The auditions will be “audition for all programs at once - the guidelines are on the website)” and call backs for Sunday. Colleges are just now starting to sign up and include to date:
Cornish College of the Arts
CalArts
University of Nevada Las Vegas
Mercyhurst College
The Theatre School at DePaul University
The American Academy of Dramatic Arts
Chapman University
Columbia College Chicago
The University of the Arts
The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts
…more will be joining -keep watching the website.

Some schools are for theatre and tech theatre, some are for dance, and some are for all three.

questions? reply here or check out the website. Students who register online will receive an e-mail with a confirmation #. You then send the $50, your resume and photo as instructed to me and I compile a master book for EVERY college in attendance.

Many of the colleges want to know if you are active in a thespian troupe. Most high schools with theatre programs belong to one in some way. Jope this explains. If none then if trying to register you may just want to put all
0’s in that field.

This is how Unifieds in Las Vegas are done and we plan to mirror that. It has worked for over a decade and the schools that attend continue to come and find excellent talent that get many offers of admissions and scholarship
