Unified Auditions 2009

Re: the troupe numbers…here’s a listing of troupes in California…

[California State Thespians](Untitled Document)

My school is part of the Thespian troupe thingy. Douglas Anderson school Of the Arts

There was some chatter up-thread about schools that do not participate in Unifieds but hold auditions at the same time in the same cities. I found one group of schools called the Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs that seem to do this. The members of the consortium include Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, the North Carolina School of the Arts, and Purchase College at the State University of New York.

Those who have been down this road before, does this sound accurate?

I’m kinda in a rush right now, but what you do is this?:

1.Apply for ALL of your schools (whether you have 8 or whatever),

2.then when those schools offer/give an audition date,

3.make the date on the 4,5, or 6 (for unifieds) so that you audition for all of your schools in the same week?

And just to be clear, ANYONE can get financial aid right (reguardless of grades and stuff)? Let’s say one school’s tuition fee and stuff is 24,000 dollars each year for 4 years (which is 96,000 total) and you ask your high school or whoever to provide financial aid, will that cover the entire 96,000 dollars? With that, if it comes to pay for like books or whatever what do you do? Just say “Oh I have financial aid/scholoarship”? Or do you pay up front???

P.S. Sorry for asking dumb stuff, I’m just so clueless up to now and i’m trying to get these questions in early so I don’t have to be so confused next year when I start applying/auditioning.

Please be careful that you do not schedule ALL your auditions during the same week. If you get sick and have to reschedule you may not be able to, as some schools have waitlists for auditions. If you are trying to do as many as possible at Unifieds go for it, but have others scheduled at staggered times.

We know someone that this happened to and she said she never thought about getting sick. After scrambling she did get another school on the list at last minute with a late audition and did get a reschedule on the last day of auditions for another. It all worked out well and she got accepted to a great fit, but she said that if she knew then what she knows now…!

Javon, I think you may have some serious misconceptions about financial aid. While many (possibly most) high school counselors are not very qualified for dealing with the specialized process of majors such as musical theatre that require auditions, all HS counselors should be able to give you assistance with financial aid information. I think going in and talking in person to your HS counselor would be the first place to start for that information.

Just wanted to add that your high school can give you information about financial aid and scholarships, but they will not do these applications for you. Your parents will need to fill out a FAFSA form - that is the form that colleges use to calculate your financial need. And you can apply for scholarships within your community. Money from colleges is usually either need-based, based on your family’s finances - or is merit aid, based on your application and academic qualifications. Some schools may also offer scholarship money based on your audition/talent. I don’t think you will find any school that will give you a “free-ride” - one who will cover all of your expenses. Maybe you should check out the Financial Aid Forum here on CC for more info.

Financial Aid – You may also want to go onto Fastweb to get notifications of possible scholarships. Although most require some sort of application and/ or essay – even for small amounts of money – it could be possible to piece together a fair amount of additional financial assistance for the work you put into the applications and essays.

I would be interested where you heard about the Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs and what the website was. I googled it and found nothing.

Re: financial aid. Anyone can APPLY for it, but “everyone” doesn’t necessarily meet each school (or the federal government’s) eligibility. I am not saying this very well, so let me try again. You or your family will fill out a form known as the FAFSA, which uses a formula to figure out how much your family is expected to contribute (based on their incomes, etc.) to your education. That is called your family’s EFC: Expected Family Contribution. If there is a big gap between the cost of the school and your family’s EFC, schools may offer you a combination of loans, grants, work study and scholarships. A few schools apparently guarantee to meet 100% of need, but I don’t think any of the usual MT schools do that.

JSD:
I, too, looked for a website but to no avail. The Consortium is mentioned on the websites of the 4 schools that are members.

There is an advertisement for the Consortium in the 2008 College Directory put out by Dramatics Magazine. It lists the February 2008 auditon dates. It goes on to say for further information write or call the individual universities: Boston, Carnegie Mellon, North Carolina School of the Arts and Purchase and gives their contact information.

No website for the Consortium is given.

I work at a performing arts high school in Las Vegas. We host the Feb Unifieds through our theatre department. It is one audition for all schools in attendance at one time for theatre and portfolio review for tech students. We are starting a seperate program called the Las Vegas National Performing Arts Auditions. They will be held the weekend of Sat/Sun Nov 1 & 2, 2008. This will be auditions for programs in theatre, technical theatre, and dance. We are starting this program to allow students more opportunities in the fall of senior year to look at colleges of many levels and “shop around” and have more time to prepare for later additions, increase GPA, test scores etc that they may need if they identify a college that is or was not on their aplication list. The auditions will be “audition for all programs at once - the guidelines are on the website)” and call backs for Sunday. Colleges are just now starting to sign up and include to date:
Cornish College of the Arts
CalArts
University of Nevada Las Vegas
Mercyhurst College
The Theatre School at DePaul University
The American Academy of Dramatic Arts
Chapman University
Columbia College Chicago
The University of the Arts
The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts
…more will be joining -keep watching the website.

Some schools are for theatre and tech theatre, some are for dance, and some are for all three.

questions? reply here or check out the website. Students who register online will receive an e-mail with a confirmation #. You then send your resume and photo as instructed to me and I compile a master book for EVERY college in attendance.

I don’t see Purchase on the unifieds and was wondering if I auditioned for them would I have to go to their campus?

Purchase has the following cities listed in addition to on campus auditions:

New York

Chicago

San Francisco

Los Angeles

Houston

Miami

Check out their website under acting department/ freshman for application and requirements. Good Luck!

Regarding the Chicago Unifieds… How many schools would it be practical to try and schedule?

D has made her final list of schools, and 6 of her schools will be at Chicago Unifieds…

BOCO
Ithaca
Michigan
Otterbein
Penn State
Point Park

If it comes down to it, we could leave out Penn State and Point Park, as they are closer to home, and could do on campus auditions there… just trying to minimize the total number of trips we’ll have to take…

any thoughts?

I have a question about the application fees. Is there typically an audition fee and an application fee? Thanks for any information.

In regards to Penn State. You might want to check the website and see if they offer an accompanist and do a dance component. It might make a difference to you if you want a full audition experience. I do not believe that they offer those two things at the LA unfied audition but I dont know about Chicago.

thanks, good point, I’ve seen that otterbein doesn’t provide accompaniment at unifieds, so she was going to be prepared for that anyway… will check on PS though.
