Our experience based on last year’s Chicago’s Unifieds is that you can comfortably do one school per half day – that is six total if you can get the scheduling gods to cooperate so that the openings all line up. In my D’s case she did 5 plus one walk in.

I strongly recommend arriving the night before and staying at the Palmer House even though it costs a boatload of money. It will significantly lower an already very stressful environment and give your D a place to unwind or warm up in private.

Also, don’t forget that February is prime snow storm weather in the Windy City, so not having to leave the hotel is nice. Last year there was a storm the night we arrived and one the day we were going to leave, so give yourself plenty of travel cushions. Because of the snow, we delayed our departure a day and took advantage of the Art Institute a short walk away. Jersey Boys was, and I believe still is, playing at a theatre a block a away from the Palmer House and proved a nice distraction one night as well.

This little walk down memory lane comes at a great time. Since they are on the quarter system, I am literally dropping my D off to start her BFA in MT at Otterbein tommorrow

Tell your daughter to break a leg and remember your job is to be the anchor in the middle of this audition storm.

Thanks, yeah was planning on making a reservation here soon for the Palmer house, in one of those concierge level rooms, starting the night before so we’d have a nice “home base” away from home…

Re: Otterbein… we made plans for a little trip there on 10/10, D is going to sit in on some classes, etc… maybe she’ll meet your daughter!

Scheduling also does depend on which schools have dance auditions! If a school doesn’t, you can usually do 2-3 in half of a day.
One of my good friends that is actually going to be an MT at Otterbein, did 8 auditions at Unifieds. And another friend last year, who is an MT at UMich did 8 as well (including UMich).
So it really does depend on how the auditions are happening.
Also, staying in the Palmer House was probably the best decision I could have made. So much more comfortable than having to trudge through the snow, and if you have other families that you know are going- share a room!

I’m stilliffy on one thing: How do you get all of your applied schools to have the audition on the dates of unfieds (most in particular, the Feb. Chicago auditions)? Do you just pick the ones that already have audition dates for the unfieds?

Once you get your confirmed date is it appropriate to call the school to get an idea of time, and can you request a time at this point?
We have 2 scheduled per day on Sat and Sun and they have been confirmed, but only PSU gave an actual time period. I need to fit in Point Park that day, and then Webster and CCM are together-Webster is only 20 minutes but I don’t know which 20 minutes. (Carnegie and NYU give times also but we are only doing one per day for those two).
I’d appreciate any feedback from someone who has been through this already.
Thanks…

Hi Guys. I’m a Senior now, and I am totally new to the Unified Auditions process. What exactly are Unified Auditions? How do the auditions work? Is it a one time audition for all colleges? Is there any fee… except for the plane fare of-course! Thank you guys again! :)

I know it’s tedious and time-consuming, but rather than re-invent the wheel, I suggest you go back and at least skim through this whole thread from the beginning. You’ll probably find all of the answers to your questions there.

Here’s the situation. There are 25 schools which are members of the National Unified Auditions. Those are the ones which are listed on the website to which you posted a link. All of us agree to send representatives to at least three of the four unified audition sites every year. In most cases, that means almost all of us attend the auditions in NY, Chicago, and Los Angeles; some attend Las Vegas as well.

In addition, however, quite a large number of schools piggyback on our dates in Chicago. The Palmer House Hilton has a huge number of meeting rooms, and they’re quite amenable to other schools using available rooms on the same dates. So are we. We have no interest in being exclusive.

So for many years, Carnegie Mellon and Juilliard, which are not official members of the Unified Auditions, have booked audition rooms at the Palmer House on the same dates. So have Liverpool, and the Royal Scottish Academy, and about 20-25 other schools. Unfortunately, there’s no way to find out for sure in advance who will be there, except by checking each individual school’s website, since the Palmer House doesn’t publish a list until the day of the auditions, if then.

I did post a list, however, a couple of years ago, of schools that had attended the Chicago auditions that year. And if some enterprising and skillful web searcher (like Fishbowl if she’s around) could find it, that would be a good place to start.

I hope this explains why RSAMD would not be listed on the Unified website, but could rightfully say that they’ll be in Chicago in February “at the Unifieds.”

Last year when my D signed up for auditions in NYC the schools said to allow 4 hours per audtion even though she could get called earlier and get out earlier. So she did CCM and CMU one day - which were in different locations. And Emerson and Ithaca another day -which I think also were in different locations. But neither were more than a short cab ride from each other.

Unfortunately she became ill with a fever and bronchitis. But I think even if she were well she would have thought the stress, physical exertion of dancing and singing at 2 auditions a day were enough. If you also face making a l/2 day commitment I’d sign up formally with your must sees and then take note of who else is there for a drop in basis.

Does anyone have a list of schools scheduled to hold auditions that aren’t officially a part of Unifieds? I know there was something similar for the 2008 Unifieds, but does anyone have a similar list for this year?

Please note that this list dates from 2007. There is no guarantee that the schools which have attended in the past will be in Chicago this year. You’ll have to check with each school. But this list will give you a place to start.

For those who are more seasoned in the art of hotel reservations:

I am eighteen and will be traveling alone for the Unifieds in Chicago. The required, minimum check-in age for the Palmer House Hilton is 21. Would it be alright to have my uncle come and check me in and then leave?

So, I scheduled my audition for BoCo at the LA unifieds, but all it said was that I was registered for the 12-1230 time slot. Does that mean its not confirmed yet or what…?

Hotels require a credit card to be on file with them. If you have a cc you can use your own, but not a bad idea for the uncle to check you in. Once you have the key, they never really care who comes and goes in the room.
