3.7 UW, 9 AP courses, ACT 32, Drama Tech Crew, Rec Soccer, two jobs, Looking for Biology with plan to attend vet school after college. Don’t have a question (yet), but D25 is applying to Union EA.

My daughter is a Junior is looking to apply EA to Union next year. She likes how it looks on paper. (Just to be consistent with thread request: 3.8 UW, Test optional, Extensive STEM Research, Volunteering 300+ hours by Senior year, PT job, Biology/Neuroscience major likely, 8 CC classes by end of Senior year)

I guess I’m wondering about the vibe. I know it’s Greek-heavy which doesn’t necessarily go with her ‘small friend get together/not heavy partier’ way of socializing. But otherwise seems to meet her criteria (small class sizes, opportunities for interaction with faculty and undergrad research, lots of clubs, activities etc.) Does the Greek influence make it really for lack of a better way to put it – a ‘frat boy’ atmosphere?

These are the exact same concerns I have. Unfortunately, we visited over spring break, which turned out to be break there as well, so I didn’t get a great feel for that, but C25 LOVED the campus, the focus on STEM, the tourguide, and the vibe from staff we met. At lunch, a random math professor started talking to us and invited us to ask him any questions. C25 was impressed, but again, not really any students on campus. We need to revisit, but we aren’t close so hoping to visit as an accepted student.

My child is now a student at Union starting her sophmore year. My daughter describes herself as a “geek” – doesn’t party at all. She has found her place there and doesn’t even talk about greek life. I can’t begin to tell you how many clubs and events are going on on campus – all with different vibes. It took her a little while to find her groove
but that has more to do with her personality than anything else. The small campus, class size, and involved professors were the perfect fit for her.

Thank you --that sounds exactly like what my daughter is looking for. I’m glad your daughter got settled in and is doing well.

FWIW, the Common Data Set input for the 2023-2024 year shows Greek life actually reducing. In Fall 2022, they reported 20% in fraternities and 37% in sororities. In Fall 2023, they reported 21% in fraternities and 24% in sororities. I don’t know why the sorority number has gone down so much. It’s historically been in the mid to upper 30s for many years, so maybe there are changes afoot.

I know the Minerva houses were established to help give another option. I think the reviews have been mixed in the past -but there was also Covid which probably threw a wrench in that plan. A quarter in fraternities/sororities is probably a good amount -still allows sufficient Greek life for those interested, but doesn’t give the impression you have to join to have a social life.

Pretty sure EA decision date is December 19, as it was last year. But I think it was December 17 two years ago.

I hope so. We do t want to wait to their stated “January”. :grinning:

I’m starting to get the feeling that decisions won’t come this week, as they have in each of the past 3 years. Maybe I’m just cynical, but the info on one of the calendar websites was updated recently to just say “Jan”
. Anybody have any different intel?

No intel, but I think they may have gotten a lot more applications after the new rankings came out. Their science facilities are amazing and it seems people know about them now. ED came out a few days later than in years past but not much. Maybe this weekend for EA?

It’s said Jan since September but I was hoping this week based on the past.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Does anyone have an idea of what time they might release?

It was 7pm last year, so we figured it would be the same this year.

Deferred.
