@meltingsoull ayeeeee lets go to WWU together!!
YAAAAS. I’m down. @WaitingForUW
and the waiting starts over…
http://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/rankings?page=2 don’t forget that UW is ranked #11 worldwide by US News, maybe they are trying to make it harder to get in, which makes sense
@hw1234 what classes did you take? How much effort did you put into your essays (post them?)?
@Grompe that’s exactly what I was saying. The whole ranking thing is getting to their heads. It’s really annoying
@meltingsoull I don’t think it’s the ranking thing - maybe the people who were rejected signed up for easy courses/didn’t take APs or their essay made them come off as pretentious and lazy.
@Grompe I am an English tutor at my local college and I put quite a bit of work into my essay, I do not think that my essay was the reason I did not get in. As far as what classes I took, I’ve been taking fairly rigorous college level courses through running start since junior year. I possibly could have taken more AP classes my sophomore year before switching to running start? I am not sure. Only thing I can think of.
@grompe This is my 2nd year of Running Start and college ain’t easy. And for my essays I had my college English teacher (been teaching for 20+ years, her kids go to UW) read my essays and she was shocked at how well my essay’s were written. Brought tears to her eyes.
Could also have something to do with race…
AND I’m not white
@WaitingForUW what do you mean by race? I wrote about my Chinese background, I doubt that hindered me, nor did it help me.
@hw1234 @meltingsoull yeah idk, I think our GPAs are similar (3.96 unweighted), and we both are tutors, so good extracurricular. I’m guessing your SAT/ACT scores were also higher than mine (32 first time [36 english, 34 science, 30 writing], 31 second time [33 math, 23 writing], but somehow I was directly admit to the paul allen computer science school at UW
My theories as to why (confirm or deny them)
You live out of state?
Your extracurriculars were not good (sports + education)
Your coursework wasn’t rigorous (AP chemistry vs. cooking and home ec)
Your essays made you sound pretentious
They won’t just deny you for the sake of it, there has to be a reason - you should post your essay or message it or something.
I’m in state, extra cirrecular activities were really good, Running start courses include : Statistics, foreign language, Lab courses and many more, again essay’s were pretty amazing! (not tryna sound ignorant)
I’m half white half Japanese, I feel like there were already a lot of white/Japanese people who maybe were more qualified than I was. I’m not too sure though, my mom just put such a heavy emphasis on applying as “multiracial” which wasn’t an option this year but it was when my sister applied (she had a 3.3 GPA and 1900 SAT and got accepted). Oh well, either way I’ll probably be going to Western
@Grompe I would post my essay’s but they are really personal to me because they are about my loved ones passing away. And I just feel uncomfortable looking at them because they make me sad
@Grompe I do live in state, and I have plenty of extracurriculars including sports, volunteer work, and music. I believe that my course work was rigorous, and my essay was about how I cared for a family member with cancer. I feel like I was a good candidate for UW, but oh well. Fortunately I have other schools I can attend.
@meltingsoull that might be the issue - are the essays just a sob story (no offense), or do they actually answer the prompt (tell us about your character). Writing a sad story is OK for some prompts, but if it’s asking about character, the best format is an anecdote (sad story) and then connect it to your character. Again, I can’t judge your essay cause I haven’t seen it.
@hw1234 what was your coursework (senior year)? And was your essay answering the prompt?
@Grompe none taken and yes they do. I compare what I was like before and then how the whole situation has changed me to the person I am today. I made sure I answered the prompt
