I have been accepted to the University of Rochester for 2011, and my mom is forcing me to go, but I really do not want to attend the university. (I rather go to the University of Exeter in England) My mom thinks the University of Exeter is a waste of money because it isn’t in the top 10 universities in the UK. How do I get out of going to the University of Rochester, and how do I convince my mom that the UofR just isn’t for me?

Thank you:)

I don’t know how you can get out of going to Rochester, if it were me I’d just tell your mum I’m not going and leave it at that. As for Exeter, it is I believe now ranked 9th by The Times in the 2012 rankings, but that position is precarious and I wouldn’t bet on it staying there. Why do you want to go to Exeter? It’s a solid university in a lovely area of the country, but I don’t think it’s worth the international fees.

Why do you want to attend Exeter over Rochester?

May I ask which major you want to study and which country you are from? Is money an issue? Proximity to home?

Have you thought through all of the ramifications of studying abroad? For example, visa restrictions might put severe limitations on your ability to work. Getting a summer job in your home country may be tricky too if employers don’t know the foreign university and cannot interview you in person. Visiting home is expensive, especially around the holidays. (Few international students go home more than twice a year. Some don’t go home at all.) A degree from Exeter may not be ideal if you want to return to the US after college: you’d be at a disadvantage on the job market and also for grad schools admissions compared to applicants with college degrees from the US.

I am hesitant to give you specific advice since I don’t know your situation. Your mom may have very good reasons for wanting you to study at Rochester.
