Maybe this has an obvious answer, but if you apply TO does that mean you didn’t take the SAT/ACT or that you’re unhappy with the score?
anyone know how CO Boulder decided to admit in exploratory studies in EA vs defer until regular decision?
It’s a small list of non elite.
During our tour at Boulder they told us that most engineering students were not admitted directly. That doesn’t appear to be the case.
I really don’t know why you are arguing. This is simply factual. There is a long list of schools that value the SATs – you don’t have to apply to them; it’s a free country.
I apologize if you think I am arguing. You made a comment, i responded, you responded. It felt very civil to me. Best of luck to you and your kiddo.
I can’t speak for those on the west coast, but for east coast schools those that applied TO were because their SAT/ACT scores were below the 50% range and would hurt their applications.
Iowa State and Iowa require SAT/ACT for automatic admission, but still maintain a TO pathway. Sort of a hybrid.
I was curious to see the long list:
Testing Required
Florida International University
Florida State University
Georgetown University
Georgia Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Purdue University
University of Central Florida
University of Florida
University of Georgia
University of Tennessee
FYI, still not arguing, just was curious so I googled.
S24 admitted into Leeds and Leeds Honors Program
Highly ranked public HS in Northern California.
ACT: 33, GPA (w) of 4.4, 3.9 (unweighted)
12 AP’s and Honors (combined total of 12) including Calc AB and BC
Eagle Scout and Varsity Football and Golf (yep, strange combo I know)
Got the Chancellor’s Award of $6,250/year
Still not arguing…clearly
I know absolutely brilliant kids who don’t test well.
Absolutely. And those brilliant kids have 10 schools they can’t apply to. There’s room for everyone’s strengths on this journey.
The SATs are just not a big deal in my kid’s public CA school anymore. Many skip it, or take it with zero prep. The ones who are also applying to selective privates or OOS publics still prepare for them, but it is a much smaller percentage than it used to be at least from our CA public school.
They came out last night
Yes, but …
And the but is Yale and Dartmouth have both said on podcasts they prefer scores. So if you are a west coast kid maybe they think … he probably couldn’t find a testing center. But if you’re from Boston they are like … where’s the score? (Or Illinois, where it is our mandated state test for junior year.)
So we are in a weird place right now. Lots of schools will stay test optional (like Cal Tech). Some will prefer them. Each school will decide what is right for them. And as a result all of us have to figure out in any given year what’s a good score to submit at any given school. Which leads to crazy things … like the kid above that might not have submitted a 1500. It’s a crazy time to be a teenager and also a crazy time to be a parent.
Son applied EA to Leeds and got email that they are reviewing and he will get a decision in April.
So, guess that’s a deferral. Had expected he might get admitted pre business or exploratory.
Anyone have experience with deferral at CU Boulder - Leeds and how often they result in an accept?
Agreed. UMN gave 90k to my kid. Zilch from Boulder
That is if you qualify, by income, for a subsidized loan, and $2000 of each year’s loan is not subsidized (so of $5500 as a freshman, $3500 can be qualified but isn’t necessarily)
That’s really interesting! We unfortunately visited on a day when there was only a general tour and not one for the School of Engineering. Afterwards, we asked about aerospace specifically to an admissions rep. She didn’t seem super knowledgable, but I walked away thinking you either get in to the major or go somewhere else. I would love to know if that’s true, the information seems conflicting. We are in WA and for UW Seattle, they make it crystal clear that the odds of getting into either CS or Eng later (ie, you matriculate as a general student) are basically zero and I really appreciate that honesty.
