If I could, I would be doing all the classes at UF. But because UF charges per course, that is not realistic for me since finances are still a major consideration. I dont think they would have admitted me if I could not do the work, so hopefully I will be fine? I know it will probably be a rough transition but im ready to put in the work needed to do well in whatever class I need.
Itâs fine to try to get credit for the Gen Eds and Core classes, but some of the critical tracking classes are helpful to take at UF since they prepare you for the next level of required classes. Just something to consider. There are countless stories of kids complaining and struggling with the weed out classes at UF of kids that were ivy League admits or valedictorians.
I heard that Macro and Micro econ were weed out classes at UF. So wouldnât it be best to test out to skip the weed outs that have the greatest potential to wreck my gpa? I must be misunderstanding your point.
CLEP pre-dates APâs. Now everyone just takes APâs or IBâs.
You can take clep and ap. Cleps are easier than the comparable ap exam and there some clep subjects that have no ap equivalent.
If you âtest outâ of an intro class but then have to take the next level, you may not be prepared for that next level. A lot of hs kids take Calc 1 and start at calc 2 for the first class in college. They may not be prepared for that level or the speed the material is presented in a college class. They may be better off starting in Calc 1, but if they already have credit for that class, the college isnât going to let them repeat it for credit again.
In your major, macro and micro may be the foundation material for another class and you may wish for a better base to build on.
What twoinanddone is saying is my point too. Macro and Micro are not weed out classes, Managerial and Financial Accounting are more the 2 weed outs for Business majors for critical tracking at least.
Does anyone know what the âweed outâ classes are for other majors? Also, are classes weed outs because the class itself is hard or because the professor teaching it is terrible? Or both?
Ok. Thank you. I will keep one of the two economics classes to do at UF.
I am only familiar with business major, but I have heard Chemistry is the other really tough one that is a weed out
On Facebook, I hear parents always talking about Portness, who teaches organic chemistry. But I donât hear about much else.
I heard about that prof on reddit. Someone said the class average was a C-.
I will have to ask my son about why they are weed out, but I think it is more you donât start you major until you finish all the critical tracking classes and they want to limit the class to who can truly handle the upper level material.
Thank you for asking. This info will be super helpful. From what I understand, no classes at UF are truly weed out because weed out implies grading on a curve where someone will definently fail. This is not the case at UF, but they are like weed out classes in the fact they put an overwhelming amount of content in the course in order to get people to drop out of the class, and therefore fall out of the major since they are not tracking anymore. That is how it was explained to me, but I could be wrong.
The main issue for the business critical tracking is maintaining a 3.0 in those classes only and the weed out a significant number get a C or below. So taking easy classes with those helps your overall GPA and gives you time to focus on the hard ones. Most kids sign up for Study Edge or Smoking Notes to help get through the class.
What are Study Edge and Smoking Notes? Thanks!
They are a paid tutoring company that has in person group classes, online videos and study packets for certain classes. From what I have learned they are a necessity for the weed out classes and even a couple higher level classes after you matriculate into your major. My sophomore son has used them for some of his critical tracking classes and he is now in his major in the business school and is using it for Business Finance.
Itâs unfortunate that this is even needed. A university at the level of UF should be able to provide a high enough level of education and support without the need for extra stuff like this.
There is free tutoring provided through the university, but not for every class and Iâm sure not every student needs these services. Office hours and the TAâs can be helpful in some classes.
How much are these services? I have heard that they are good and have been lifesavers for many kids.
