University of Florida Class of 2028 Official Thread

Thanks so much, really looking forward to our visit tomorrow!

Are you able to go to admitted student days for each? That’s might help with the decision.

I’m going to the admitted student’s tour for UF (this week - though wish I could have gone to Florida Days); and on April 13th, W&M is having it’s admitted students day. Just wondering if anyone else considered W&M v. UF. I know that they are very different schools, particularly in terms of size and school spirit. In my area, W&M better known, but I think on a national level UF is better known - I say this only in consideration of OOS job prospects down the road. Also, I think W&M is better for humanities or international relations, but UF is strong in many more areas. Also, UF being ranked significantly higher is a plus as well (though I realize rankings isn’t everything).

I checked the ABET website for Florida State University and it only shows that comp sci is accredited. Not engineering. So if I am wrong ( I apologise) its because the accreditation website is in accurate or incomplete and that is where I get and verify my information.

I just realized I said it’s quite an ā€˜hour’ to be admitted. Spellcheck, ugh!

W&M wasn’t a tippy top choice for my UF D23, but definitely in the running. As you already mentioned, they really are completely different. W&M is much smaller, felt more like a private school to me and my daughter didn’t love the campus or surrounding area. I thought it was lovely, but she was surprised at how many buildings didn’t have AC, given the hot Williamsburg weather. I’m not sure if you’re in state(VA) but UF has been much less expensive than if she chose W&M. (we’re OOS-PA) I’m not sure if they are known for giving OOS scholarships, but maybe. UF is a huge SEC sports school and that’s something that appealed to her. She is also a health science major which is REALLY big at UF.

It’s because the ABET- accredited engineering programs are listed under Florida A&M University - Florida State University. The engineering programs are operated jointly by the two universities.

As I posted a week ago in response to your statement on FSU not being ABET accredited [quote=ā€œkevi2900, post:2059, topic:3654220ā€]
The FSU Engineering School is a joint Program with FAMU

It is the only joint program with a HBCU
(https://www.abet.org/ )

When you check ABET it gives you the FAMU-FSU accreditation

Understood. It is not easy to find on the ABET site but it is there. Yes, it is a joint program created by the Florida Legislature with FAMU and FSU since two separate programs of the same type were not allowed in such close proximity, at least at that time. The vast majority, (maybe 80/20) are FSU students, but the collaboration is great. I know the students love it.

@Melissa96 Do you know who I would contact to see if my daughter can take a summer class (MAC2311) in Ohio before coming to UF in the fall. She will have her AA but 6 of those hours are from AP so she only has 54 hours of DE. She would really like to knock out this Math class (her weakness) and hit the ground running at UF in the fall with that behind her! She is planning on Majoring in Health Education (Pre-Pharmacy) and I did email those advisors just wanted to see if there was a preferred route for getting this approved.

You can use Transferology to see if any close to you in Ohio has already been approved as equivalent to MAC 2311. If it hasn’t we can work on that now so you will know before summer.

Yes I found one. I didn’t know if I needed to get approval for her to take it?

The equivalency being there will guarantee the class will transfer since she hasn’t taken it yet.

Thank you so much for your help! Just out of curiosity if the course is worth 5 credits where she takes it does she get 5 or does she get 4 because that is what the course is at UF?

It would be 5 credits because that is what she took.

We have heard alot about how most core business school classes are online and that in person classes at the business school do not start until junior year. MY daughter is between a few different majors, including journalism/sport management, business etc. She would prefer to take the fewest number of online courses as possible. Can anyone comment on how many online classes are in either the journalism/communicatons school or liberal arts?

My son is a first year in statistics (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) and considering a dual major in sports management. He has had 2 online courses so far (in his first year) – intro to sports management last semester and a music theory (to fulfill gen ed requirements) this semester. Last semester, his other 3 classes ranged from larger (100+ I think) for Calc 3, to medium (50ish) to small (fewer than 20 for intro Spanish). This semester he says all his in person classes (4 of them) have under 30 students – including an intro Psych class required for the Sports Management major. They range from humanities to coding/stats. I was surprised.

You can view classes here, as well as their format: You can look at the schedule of courses here:

Here’s an explanation of ā€œonlineā€ that I read on the parents page: Online is a misnomer … most are asynchronous… that means you can go to the class in person or you can watch the recorded lecture … most kids love it because if you can’t go at class time you never really miss class …

@Melissa96 I’m trying to plan out the courses I want to take in the years to come, and I’m wondering if I have to take a foreign language at UF for CLAS if I am coming in with an A.A degree? I’ve been trying to find an answer online (to no avail), so I was wondering if you know the answer to this? Thank you so much! You’ve been so helpful!
