University of Florida Class of 2028 Official Thread

Out of curiosity what is “NE angst”?

Northeast (specifically, PA, NJ, NY)

I know that the UF president guy wants to raise tuition for OOS. Is there a timeline for that and will it affect people in classes that have already started? Because I really don’t want my bill to double half way through my time there. The FSU OOS waiver is really getting me to think about which school I want lol. Thanks!

Typically, they won’t do that. There may be incremental increases (under 5%), but any large increases like the ones he is suggesting would apply to incoming students, and they would be aware of that at the time of application. At least, that has been my experience with other schools.

Thank you. Do you, or anyone else here, know if UF also gives out OOS tuition waivers and it they have minimum requirments for it like FSU? Because I am having a hard time finding that info online if they do.

I think grandparent waivers are the most likely but there may be a view department waivers. Waivers – Finance & Accounting

Yes - that OOS Waiver is very tempting. We were all set on UCF, until the waiver came in.

It’s probably a tactic on FSU’s part to get students who would likely get into UF and UCF to go to them instead. And it’s working lol.

Sorry - can you school me on this a little bit more? When you talk about the NE angst, are you referring to the attitudes of people from the states you mentioned? I live in a very liberal area (DC - basically, Biden country) - and any mention of showing interest in a Florida school causes so much negative emotion!

seriously - money talks!

The NE is (IMO) a lot more frenzied of a lifestyle - highly populated, bad traffic, irritated and impatient people (e.g., constant honking of horns). In the south, which is not as highly populated in parts, people are friendly and generally very polite. Daily life does not feel as stressful.

I definitely agree.

A lot more goes into it for UF. In state, OOS. UF and FSU are very different. FSU is SAT driven and not holistic at all, regardless of what they may say, it’s not hollistic. They prob don’t even read essays or look at the resume they request. UF on the other hand looks heavy at your course rigor, and transcript of classes. They look at your essay and obv your test score. They try to weed out applicants by giving an extra prompt no other FL schools give. I have seen in the last two years in state kids accepted with SAT’s in the 1200’s, but with very specific higher level AP course work in math and sciences and very high GPA’s. In state kids. I can’t speak for OOS. UF is known to be unpredictable with admissions, where as FSU has become predictable. This also does not include any first gen applicants; that’s another ball game.

There is no comparison between UMiami and UF two polar opposite experiences, cultures costs, students etc. I can’t imagine someone would be deciding between such starkly different schools and experiences.

Do you know if this really helps? I know it is marked important in the CDS, so i’m wondering if it really does help give an edge. Thanks!

Also the rep from FSU I talked to at a college fair once said they only use the resume and essay in limited situations if they need to distinguish between two different applicants. They also use it fully for honors decisions. So you are definently right about that.

First Gen gets a huge edge at most schools.

Here’s what is on their website for OOS waivers, I don’t believe there are minimum requirements. Just for frame of reference, my daughter’s UF roommate got an out of state waiver at FSU. She and my daughter (with near identical stats) both got about 4K from UF. It appears to be much harder to get money from UF. My daughter’s stats were 4.0UW 4.5W, 34 ACT

Thank you very much. I have stats just a bit lower than your daughter so I probably won’t be getting much, but that’s ok.

Thanks! I hope it’s enough to get me over the finish line at UF. All my stats are within their ranges and my ECs and essays are good, but I still feel super worried about it. This wait sucks.
