The UF person I spoke to at a college fair told me they do not consider class rank at all except to compare people from the same high school. So if you are the only person from your high school applying (I know this does not apply to most of you, but still), class rank will not be considered in the review.
Edit to add: This is the same UF rep that told me that In state vs OOS is not considered, which you guys have basically convinced me is not the case, so take this with a grain of salt.
Very different schools. Both wonderful in their own ways. Depends what feels right for the student. I have several family members who all LOVED OSU. But yes, it’s BIG! But really fun!
I know some students in my school here in FL that applied that are in the top 5-25% in my school. I’m in 22% in our school in our IB program with a good gpa, extra curricular activities, low income, first generation, but horrible SAT score. So, I probably won’t have a chance to get into UF.
This post makes me happy! My son transferred in from CO and they just gave him 4’s for almost all his A’s (vs the 5’s or 6’s that they hand out like candy). He has and 4.0 uw, 35 ACT (not super scored) but his class rank is down around the 25%. Fingers crossed for Fri at 6pm!
They do consider it. In fact it is marked as important in the CDS! I think it will help significantly. I briefely looked at last year’s thread and could not find a single first gen who was rejected. But again, CC is a small sample size.
I can’t imagine the OOS acceptance rate is not much lower than in-state for equivalent stats. But one thing I can promise you, the first gen acceptance rate is among highest rates of all demos at many schools.
Agree with ths OOS stuff. I believed the person from UF I talked to for a long time, but I am unconviced it is true by the data. The only plausible explanation I can think of is that many OOS students do not know the level of difficulty it takes to get into UF so the students that apply are generally lower stat thus lowering the OOS acceptance rate artifically.
I am hoping the first gen comes through for me, but we will see. If I am as objective as possible, I think I have a 50/50 shot of getting in, maybe a bit higher.
I think they are just super holistic, so that makes it unpredictable. They will take lower stat people with really good essays and ECs while rejecting or PACEing those with higher stats and not as strong EC’s and essays. You just need to have the right combo of both to maximize your chances. No evidence to support this, just my thoughts.
Current 1st semester graduate student here. I just want to come on an encourage you all. I was waiting on pins and needles back in September when I waiting for a decision. So I totally understand the anxiety. I hope you all get accepted.
