University of Florida Class of 2028 Official Thread

Does anyone know if a student can switch from Biology to Biomedical Engineering major? I know they are in two different schools. DS indicated Biology in Commonapp which is in school of arts&sciences but is now also considering BME. I know UF does not accept by major, but do they allow change in college after acceptance?

If everyone getting accepted had better stats I would understand but how do they reject an in-state 4.0uw, 35 ACT kid that has never done anything wrong?

It is holistic admissions. So it’s not all about academics. There are also insitutional priorities. So maybe the person with lower stats got in becuase they are first gen which is what they want more of. Or they are from Wyoming and UF wants someone from all 50 states. There’s a lot more than goes in than just academics. I know it sucks to get rejected though and i’m sorry for all of those who didn’t get it.

Admissions are a toss-up. Even with a stellar academic record, nothing is guranteed

Congrats. You’ll love OSU!

I’m in state so I understand, but at the same time no one is guranteed admission. It’s unfortuante and I feel for the highly qualified kids who got rejected but I just feel like legislators don’t really care too much about us tbh.

I have no idea the range. Hers appears to be $6000 which is probably $1500 a year. I think its tied to the URSP program which requires a bit more rigor though.

UF takes state funds… they should not turn our highest achieving kids away. So my son gets a penalty because I went to college…

It’s not a penalty. First gen students have to go through a lot more to get to where they are. Trust me, I am one of them. It’s hard when none of your parents went to college to navigate this process. I’m sorry he didn’t get in. I’m sure he’ll get in and attend somewhere amazing!

Agreed. As a fellow first gen it’s disheartening to see kids with alumni connections and parents who have all gone to college game the process while I rely on wiki and YouTube videos to figure out what I’m doing. At the end of the day, everyone will end up where they belong.

Exactly. It’s awful to watch these kids turned down by our state flagship school. Awful and has gotten worse. Like I mentioned, the state needs to adopt similar hard stops for UF and even FSU that exist in North Carolina. Protect our kids and state schools that we support through taxes and residency. Out of state tuition waivers and grandparent waivers is also absurd for a state like FL with our population size. Othe states are NOT giving our kids the same affordability to attend their schools I promise you that.

How do you fit 50,000 instate applicants into 5000 spaces? And most of those instate kids are qualified, have high test scores, really good ECs, perfect GPAs. How they do it in Florida is to have USF, UCF, FSU, FIU, FAU, NFU, WFU…the school puts money into those schools too. They also have programs to help fund instate students into private schools.

They just can’t make UF accommodate all 50k instate students who apply every years.

Yep, the florida system is so amazing. I would be happy to go almost any of them!

Agreed, I was first gen to. UF was my dream school but I didn’t apply because I had no one to walk me through the process.

Exactly. And the mistaken belief that UF is so far above all other Florida schools sounds great…until your kid is the one not accepted to UF. There are many great options for high performing kids in Florida. Everyone will be just fine!

My son got in the honors program a few years ago. Its called Honors Gator Families. It private and the admin will confirm if you/your student is eligible.

Yep. This is a big problem. Lot’s of first gens ā€œslip through the cracksā€ because they have no help or support. Very unfortunate.

Yes, to this day I have my regrets and I always wonder what coukd have been. UNF was a wonderful school and I’m glad I went there. Getting into UF for my Masters was just as wonderful.

While I worked 50-60hrs/wk my son did all of the navigating by himself. In addition when I went to college, 1984-88, it wasn’t quite the same.

I’m happy for you getting in- you seem pretty invested. But realize that my in-state son was also heavily invested and he had a perfect gpa near perfect ACT all while swimming competitively and working weekends changing tires.

I’m trying to say that UF’s process needs to be looked at by the legislators because FL should want to keep their high performers at home.

Totally love all young people who strive and excel, especially from challenging situations, the point others make is, why are other students with stronger stats disenfranchised. There are schools that will work great for every level of student and scores, but not merit basing choices at any level is actually not moving us forward as a society
