Thank you. I just did a deep dive on the honors program and the new honors village. Just wow, what an amazing program!
I would have been one of those if it wasnât for the amount of A2C I consumed during covid. Sure, the sub is toxic as heck but I sure did learn a lot about college that I never would have learned from my parents. Honestly, if nursing school doesnât work out, Iâm considering starting a nonprofit to offer outreach to first gen students.
Honestly, they probably need someone to pay the OOS costs to make up for instate ones.
I donât think there are enough first generation students accepted to really explain why great credentialed students instate cannot get into their flagship. We got into great schools, but also not into our state flagship- I think its the ranking issue with several students coming from the same high school. 100 kids from the same high school apply and they take the top 30 or so, even if kids 30-50 are also amazing and maybe more competitive candidates than the top 30 kids from a county or two over.
I canât even begin to come up with a rational explanation for this. Private schools can do whatever they want, but with taxpayer money involved, there needs to be some level of transparency and accountability. Still, this stuff happens with every big state. Go look at the thread for UT Austin admissions. So many 4.0 UW GPA applicants with mid-1500 SATs got denied for CS, Engineering and Business.
Yep, as much as I donât like A2C, I donât know where I would be without it. First gens shouldnât have to get their info from reddit.
Texas seems to manage. If a kid has the best stats in the state shouldnât she get to pick her school?
They get to pick their school, but not their major. Itâs very, very competitive for top majors especially at UT Austin and a bit at TAMU.
yes- UF lets you switch. Just take the critical tracking courses for the new major and then figure out how to declare the new major. The student will still have to apply to the College of their major sometime in their junior year to actually graduate with the declared major.
Iâm sorry your highly deserving instate student did not get in. Hopefully you have other Florida University options. My class of 23 high stat child was accepted to UF with zero merit while 2 students at his high school with much lower stats were given MFOS scholarships (full rides) to UF.
He chose University of Central Florida with an amazing scholarship and honors college acceptance. He loves UCF and is thriving there.
Love the school that loves you back!
A kid should be able to, and it seems like Florida produces some really capable kids. My first instinct is that University of Florida, as big as it is, is obviously not big enough to meet the demand and qualifications of its instate students. It seems like kids do want to stay in state- so maybe more investment is needed to create a larger system to accommodate them? But it is a shame to see really qualified kids get their hearts broken.
I got my Bachelorâs degree at Texas (UT Austin) decades ago. When I applied, if you were in the top 10% of your class and you had an 1100 or higher on the SAT, you were in and could major in whatever you wanted.
Now for UT Austin, it is top 6% to be an auto admit but that doesnât guarantee major. So many kids with elite stats get denied from Engineering, Business and CS. It is nuts.
So glad to hear your son is excelling at UCF! I am debating whether to commit to UCF or FSU (UCF gave merit; FSU gave none) so itâs nice to hear about peopleâs experiences!
4.0 and 35 is worth following up with admissions because it seems either they made a mistake or there is an issue you arenât aware of, whether it is something in the essay, something on social media, etc.
Itâs interesting you should say that. When UNF was created they actually wanted to make the school UF at Jacksonville. Imagine all the students from in state that could be gators if the founders of UNF had agreed to that.
It would make it a satellite campus and no one wants to go to a satellite campus lol.
True, but Jacksonville has almost a million people. I would have been just fine going there.
Wish theyâd done that. Iâm local so thatâd be heaven
UF isnât flooded with more 4.0 UW GPA with 35 ACT applicants than it can handle. This isnât a private school. It shouldnât be a guessing game for the most elite in-state applicants with parents that pay taxes.
It would be a good option for a lot of people!
