Yep…and I think more schools will follow suit going forward. Standardized tests are far from perfect but they are a fair and objective way to compare students across the country. Comparing GPA’s and class rank across school districts and regions is ridiculous. As someone who has moved around the country frequently I can tell you that a 4.0 GPA and top 10% ranking in the suburbs of Chicago or Boston is much more impressive than the same stats in other less competitive areas we’ve lived in. SAT and ACT puts everyone on the same scale.
Agree with this. Also think they need to make it harder. There are to many ultra high scores.
I think they are doing that with the new digital version. It gives progressively harder questions if you’re doing well.
Just found out I am rejected. A bit surprise. I was accepted OOS UT Austin with Honors and several other schools, but not committed to any yet and waiting for couple ivies and other privates at the end of March. So I am impressed by UF, Seems very very competitive. Congrats to all accepted! Quite achievements and Good luck!
It definently helps. However it only gets harder once based on how well you do in section 1. It’s not really based on each question. I know that the US average on these tests is going down, but for the people who want to go to selective colleges the average goes up every year. It’s already in the 1500s at the ivy’s. Soon it will be a near 1600 perfect average. They just need to make more challenging questions for parts of it so schools can diferentiate between people at the very top. It’s all just my opinion though. Definently not an expert in creating or writing these exams.
Daughter got in!
Very happy for her.
I agree with some of the above comments that out of state waivers should be much less frequent OR keep more in-state kids with high stats. Replacing an in state high achiever without gaining increased revenue is counter productive. UNLESS, they are working together to drive up the stats at the other state schools to take off the pressure. FSU is getting pretty close stat-wise and USF is on the rise quickly.
Acceptance for fall/summer is more competitive than Innovation
No honors for those stats blows my mind…wow Congrats on acceptance!
With 22 APs, you student will not be taking many of the Honors’ classes, because they are bringing those credits with them. Offering them Honors admission is probably viewed as a wasted seat.
2x varsity swim team captain
Part time job
Volunteers helping his classmates (school where roughly 50% qualify for free lunch)
What are we saying to these kids if they do literally everything they can and lower performers are placed ahead of them?
I just don’t think it’s fair and I hope someone will join me as I fight the system.
50% of students with free lunch is low. There are many many districts in the 70-100% range. Florida legislature just put up a bill to make breakfast and lunch free for all Florida students. It’s a great move.
WI may be passing law requiring UW to accept top 5% of every WI high school.
Totally correct, meritocracy is the best way to help this and next generations advance. Trying to social engineer always has unintended consequences
Totally respect all hard working accomplished students
The only problem with that is, he is not using very many of those credits at all because he wants to spend four years in college. He simply took the APs for rigger, not for the credits, even though he passed every exam with a five and one with a four.
UF not giving him honors most likely means he’s going to take one of his other full ride offers where he has honors at out of state schools or head to ND Honors . He still has time to decide though so who knows what he will choose in the end
D24 accepted OOS Honors, URSP. So excited. Wonderful to see the smile on her face after the UNC OOS rejection.
I am so sorry about your result. It really sucks. Just came here to say I’m not sure Texas manages any better. I know so so many super high stats in state kids (4.0, 1500+) that get CAP at UT. It’s true they can get in if they apply to the school of education and, usually, liberal arts. But many do not get in to Engineering, business, computer science. And they can’t switch schools - must apply as a transfer. Also if they accept CAP they still can’t come in to any of the competitive schools.
I’m not saying it’s right…just not really any better than other super competitive state flagships in terms of how hard it is to get in.
Sorry again about your disappointment. Wishing the best.
My daughter got in! She had a lacrosse game tonight, so she still doesn’t know!
In state
1370 SAT
3.98 UW/4.6 W
AICE Diploma and 10 AP classes.
Many EC’s and athlete with varsity captain for 3 years
She applied for Summer B and got Summer B
Agree with all this. No state has it totally figured out. There is no perfect solution and it leads to unfortunate situations like this. But it’s best to just move on to another option and not dwell on it in my opinion. As everyone says, love the school that loves you back.
@Ae1231 and congrats to you! I was first gen before that was a thing. And before we had Reddit to help navigate (maybe better without it - ha!). It is a big accomplishment. Kudos.
