University of Florida

tomslawsky,
You are distorting my comment with your misinterpretation.

My point is that it is highly unlikely that UF Peer Assessment will raise from a 3.6 to a 4.3 and match that of UVA anytime soon, especially with all the bad news coming from Florida. Thinking that UF will do so, just illustrates those delusions of grandeur that we have all become so accustomed to witnessed from UF students and alumni.

This has nothing to do with whether other schools with a national reputation match UF’s score or not.

Others have already bashed UF’s 3.6 PR score. That score does handicapp UF in moving up in the USNWR rankings since it’s worth 25% of their total score.

Found this interesting article done in 2005 by a prof at Emory.
[The Academic Exchange](http://www.emory.edu/ACAD_EXCHANGE/2005/octnov/hicks.html)

He concludes through his analysis:
“Strictly from the perspective of enhancing the college’s reputation, then, improving the graduate school would appear to be a relatively effective, even optimal, policy.”

It appears UF is indeed already laying the groundwork for higher Peer Review scores with all the money comming into it’s graduate programs.

All is not lost

MyOpinion;
My whole point in bringing UVA into the discussion was not to say that UF is on par with them just yet. No one here is tha delusional.
It had to do more with Bearscraze’s assertion that “ALL UF STUDENTS ARE MEDIOCRE”
Since this school (UVA) actually seemed acceptable to him (for a lowly public) I chose to dig into their admitted student stats.

In this comparison I chose not to use UF’s size against it.
After all I don’t see anyone dismissing all of China’s Olympic gold medals simply because they have a population of over a billion.
Those who do can have all the US medals dismissed by say Great Britain?

The fact still stands per all the data sets referenced.
UF has more actual high achieving students (head count) than UVA.

Therefore:
IF ALL UF students are mediocre THEN ALL UVA students must also be mediocre??

To the OP: I stick with my advice to you that your question is better addressed on the medical blog.

rogracer,

Don’t forget that UF rejects 13 % of all applicants with a 1400+ SAT too, admidditely to my shegrin.

This is a ridiculous thread. UF is a great school, but it isn’t much better than the schools it is ranked near currently (Miami for example). The problem is that UF fans seem to think UF is equivalent to Berkeley or UVA so other, more rational, people jump in to bring some objectivity to the issue and it turns into a flame war. This thread should die…

You all may have heard that UF is getting their budgets slashed in an unprecedented fashion. But if you really look at the long term, then UF is showing a pattern of substantial improvement over the last 30 years. It’s reasonable to assume that the future is so bright for the Gator Nation that we will have to wear shades.

Let’s look at the facts:

In the early 90’s UF was ranked the 29th overall best public university in the USA, and peaked at 13th overall in 2007. We had a little bump in the road for 2008, but in the long run the UF machine will grow to epic proportions.

For the first time UF is starting to build an endowment that is able to match some of the strongest research universities (both private & public).

UF has already raised $700 million over the last 3 years in their latest Capital Campaign, and they are projected to reach $1.5 billion in just a few more years. For the first time the Alumni are really striving to make gains on this end.

The population in the state of Florida is projected to reach 28 million by the year 2030, and it’s a fact that their will be an substantial increase in demand for the FTIC incoming classes. Also Bright Futures is politically untouchable and it’s almost a given that the Legislature will continue to pay the tab for Florida’s students (although I do think the present system needs to be tweaked).

The athletic program is easily one of the strongest in the nation, and will continue to have great success in the years to come. This will be a huge draw for incoming freshmen. Just look at how the demand has spiked since the 3 national championships! (from 55% admitted to 36% admitted, and 5,000 more students have applied since 2005)

The money raised from Tuition Differential alone will bring in enough instuctors and junior faculty that Class-Sizes will reduce to the teens by 2012.

The rest of the nation is now staring to pay attention to the biomedical research and life sciences that the state is now starting to produce. The business community in Florida is under the disposition that they must shift our economy from Agriculture and Tourism to a more diversified economy (right now the state generates over $700 billion, and it’s projected to grow amazingly after we get over the housing bust).

The Florida Board of Governors and the Legislature are now in deep discussions about changing how we fund universities in the state of Florida. Basically the funding formula will be changed to benefit UF & FSU while at the same time the Directional Universities will be taken care of as well.

UF & FSU are now really starting to work together so that they can both raise at the same time. Basically the lobbying power has increased 10 fold.

For all of these reasons I believe that UF & FSU are on the rise. This is a long term pattern that will show substantial improvement in the years to come.

yawn…UMiami is in beautiful Coral Gables, one of the most expensive, elitists addresses to have in South Florida.

I think your time here is up.

I like how UF is supposedly going to shoot up the rankings and become a top 10 public in no time, yet it moved up a grand total of 0 spots this year…

LMAO…Oh, my God!!!

^ Respond to my argument Myopinion.

^^ In order to have a meaningful argument, or accomplishing anything productive debating, I need to argue with someone who is basically reasonable.

In Debate Club, we learned that before proceeding with a debate, you should familiarize yourself with the concept of “impossible people”. I am sorry, but your comments place you right into that category. It is not worth it. You do not have an argument. You are just another proud UF alumnus or student or fan.

I have stated facts that show the tide is rising in UF’s favor. I suspect that you and many of the other haters attend good but not great private universities. You feel the need to bash UF so that it justifies the 250k your parents paid for your education.

Truly pathetic…

“In Debate Club, we learned that before proceeding with a debate, you should familiarize yourself with the concept of “impossible people”. I am sorry, but your comments place you right into that category.”

Hello…pot, kettle on line 2…he’s calling you black!

“My pinion” is a Miami guy who feels the need to denigrate UF. The bottom line is that because of horrible methodology, UF is under ranked by ~15 spots. Objective data supports this statement.

On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, i can’t wait until the UF-Miami game this year. Maybe we will finally win 1…go gators!

It’s funny to me that U-Texas is ranked just about the same as UF, but they seem to get a pass as a bottom tier elite school. You can even make a cogent argument that UF>UT.

^ While I agree UF is a rising university, UT is ahead mostly due to its more renowned programs (particularly engineering and business).

Just goes to show how anyone can just make “random” statements about their most hated schools as being “mediocre”. Unfortunately for them they can’t backup their statements with facts and offer no plausible rebuttals to statistical facts presented to them.

“On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, i can’t wait until the UF-Miami game this year. Maybe we will finally win 1…go gators!”

Haha, at least you acknowledged that historically Miami has owned UF in football. The Gators are the ones that have something to prove.

^^^^^
Hey, I have Gator pride, but am logical and pragmatic!

UCBChemGrad,

UF is ranked 1 spot less than U-TX this year. Statistically, it’s a wash. It would be of like saying this year that UVA is “ranked” above Michigan when 1 spot separates them. Hey, if Texas is considered “mediocre” , I’ll take that…for now!
