I never knew this many people existed who would want to make a case FOR UF…

If you are going to make statements like that, back it up with quantitative facts. Post a link. If you can’t produce facts to back up your statements then your statements are worthless and just pure hate. Show us analysis. For someone who claims to be as smart as you think you are, I would think you would be more factual. You sound bitter by the way you talk.

Back up your statements. The UF supports on this thread have easily been able to produce facts, figures, and analysis to back their statements. Where are yours?

Times are changing my friend. UF is making a substantial push to be a top 10 school. We are lucky to have a president like Bernie Machen to guide the university to higher ranks. He has helped UF become an even more premier, national research university.

That’s what happens when the athletics department keeps winning championships. ;)

A couple things:
- If you’re talking national rep, UCLA pretty easily edges UNC – especially if you taken into account graduate programs.
- USC is a private school.

I said:

I meant to say top 10 public school.

I also said:

and I meant to say “supporters”.

(the dang forum wouldn’t let me edit it for some reason).

UF didn’t win ANY (national) championships this past year ;)

Bescraze is just a UF hater. This is like alot of Florida residents who rack up thousands upon thousands in debt going to a top-50 private, and they feel the need to bash the public flagship to feel good about their investment. Absolutely pathetic in my opinion.

SSobick your right on… Some kid at my school chose to go to Boston College instead of UF… his debt would’ve been 0 if he would have gone to UF, but since he chose BC he has over 150k in debt (parents werent very supportive either) and has since applied to UF Medical School. Final comment, UF is a diverse school. You have some real smart kids as well as those that are not. UF’s rise in the rankings is a reflection of the bettering of the school and a new standard that is being set in terms of higher education in the state of FL. It may not be as “well-known” as UMich, Berkeley(who would go there after what happened earlier this year, crossed it off my list) and UNC, but honestly Florida’s stock is on the run… and if you dont watch out your stupid golden bears will be “gator-bait”!!!

Yea and for that dip**** who said UF didnt win any championships, we’ve been in the Championship in all three major sports (baseball, football, and basketball) in the last five years which is a lot better than Cal’s 0 BCS appearances, last College World Series Championship game 1957, as well as Cal’s last NCAA Basketball Championship- 1959… UNC does do pretty well in sports except for that godforsaken football team, and Michigan-Loss to App State…

Find some where else to bash the Gators and there 340,000 alumni!

I will say I was a little harsh on the Michigan football team… even though they did start off slow they did end up 8-4 and did beat UF in their bowl game so they get a little more cred

people here are too sensitive. You want objective meters, look at its student to faculty ratio, its sat scores, its acceptance rate, its endowment…no one considers it a top public let alone a top school. I am not remotely bitter, my parents can afford a private school, for whicg I am very grateful. If I had different financial concerns, maybe I would go to UF, but it still wouldn’t change my view of the school, which is pretty consistent. UF is a mediocre state school and has almost no rep OOS…just look at their job placement. Or even better go up to people OOS and tell them its a “public ivy”, see what they say. Its ok to like your school, but too many UF students idolize it.

Bescraze, you are absolutely right.

Personally, i find it hilarious to see how any comment about UF that threatens the glorified status the alumni gives it, triggers a knee jerk reaction by the usual suspects of calling people “UF haters” and “bitter or jealous” students from private schools that had to get in debt. What a ridiculous statement!

To some degree, it is a matter of choice. Some may choose to get into debt and rather attend an excellent private school in a great place, than another excellent public school in the middle of nowhere. To most people I know, UF is not a choice: they just can not afford to go anywhere else. They feel lucky that the school is good and well regarded in the state. As an alumni, what better else than idolize the school?

Becraze…don’t you understand that the term “Public Ivy” is coming from Howard Greene’s book…it’s not like UF alumni made this up. I also assume you disagree with USNews rankings, as well as those from Barrons, Gourman, and Kiplinger…and others. And ignore US Patent application and technology transfer rankings. And research dollars. And AAU membership, as well. All this places UF well up in the ranks of national universities…certainly a top-50 school in almost any field you care to name.

Anyway, this bickering is silly and does not serve the OPs purpose at all. JHU would be a wonderful choice. If he is cost-sensitive, UF or New College would be great in-state options. Miami may offer a compelling in-state private alternative, since they are very generous with merit based aid.

This thread should be over.

I said UF didn’t win any national championships this past year, not over the last five years. Lighten up kid – and bone up on your critical reading skills.

So far, no one has brought up the medical school acceptance numbers for UF… Does UF even have a premed advising office?

^ Hey when UCal rules your state like the Florida Gators rule Florida you can talk athletic smack. We have Florida on lockdown!

Pre-med advising website. They also have fantastic facility for walk-in appointments.

[Prehealth Advising](http://www.advising.ufl.edu/ohlpa/prehealth/index.html)

In otherwords, its pretty low. Well, if you don’t want to disclose your numbers, why don’t you just say it instead of claiming its not useful for potential premed applicants seeking to get into medical school. :)

A simple number will suffice.

the average household income of UF student’s parents’ are over $100K a year. So that kinda shoots down his/her reasoning as to why students just settle for UF (ie that they can’t afford to go to OOS private schools).

Well, you can keep Florida – nobody here wants it :)

I didn’t go to Cal, by the way.

By the way, that he applied to UF’s med school doesn’t mean anything. The med school application process is so competitive and such a crapshoot that it’s normal for candidates to apply to 15-30 schools. That school X is but one institution being sought after reflects very little about school X.
