Uw GPA = 3.86
W GPA = 4.17
OOS
Applied under criminal Justice as intended major
60+ hours of community service
worked two jobs at the same time for the last two years while participating in varsity track and field for three years (I was homeschooled freshmen year because of Covid)
State ambassador for educators rising
Chapter president for edu rising and FCCLA
Part of NHS and Tri M
5 DE classes 4 AP classes all fours except for the one in progress and the rest honors classes
Sat score sucked though which is why I don’t expect to get in 1190
Was deferred which is okay because I was expecting a flat out ejection today however UGA is just a reach school.
Did any OOS student get into the honors college yet? The website says you can either get in along with your EA acceptance or apply to the honors college after being accepted. I have heard of lots of people getting scholarships but no one has talked about the honors college. My portal doesn’t even mention it or talk about how to apply.
For former dawg parents, do you think there is any shot at a scholarship if it was not listed in the letter?
One reply above mentions Honors OOS acceptance, but my kid’s acceptance didn’t include it. There is a separate application that you access through your portal, due by Jan 15. Here’s the link to info: High School Applicants - UGA Morehead Honors College
Some kids are auto accepted into honors
Scholarships will be awarded through early April. David Graves states that in the UGA Admissions Blog. It is worth a read as UGA is very transparent about their process.
Thanks for the info and link. This guy is so transparent and communicative. He needs to run a boot camp for every other admissions program in the US. It sure would take some stress and confusion out of the whole process if everyone were as forthcoming/blunt with information, stats, etc. It doesn’t make a deferral or denial any easier but at least you’re not the the complete dark at the end of the day.
My guess is they want to see first semester grades from senior year. And to see what the RD pool looks like.
My daughter was also deferred. 3.9 something uw/4.6 w, 34/475, 1380 SAT, lots of community involvement, part time job, ECs and internship outside of school.
2 things I think hurting her…she doesn’t have any activities that are school related and her school offers AICE program that she is not in (but still toward the top of her class) that she didn’t address. You have to apply by 9th grade and we moved to the district summer before 10th…so she couldn’t…we didn’t realize this was something that should be addressed.
Good thing is she took all AP classes senior year and has all As…so can first semester grades can only help her I would think
S24 accepted into honors, classic scholarship. 1570 SAT, NMSF, very involved in Robotics, music programs both in and out of school, math team, etc… lots of leadership, 9 APs (max offered at school). 4.0 unweighted. Congrats to all accepted and pls hang in there to those deferred!
She applied business.
I hope you’re right. Thanks!
D24 Admitted w/ $9500. Not auto admitted to honors, she’ll need to apply and see what happens.
OOS, Biochem & molecular bio
4.8 WGPA, 35 ACT (composite, 34 E/M for UGA)
CR #4, NM commended
10 AP/3 DE (4’s and 5’s)
athletics, leadership, service, etc but no job, research, cure for cancer…
I feel like it totally did for S24. He saw the stats with the middle 50% for Test Scores/GPA, etc. and before even checking his portal was very matter of fact about everything. He did not want to check because he knew he was either being deferred or denied, but when he did and saw the deferral he said “I knew it would not be an admit based on what Graves posted”. Really helped.
UGA calculates GPA differently so her GPA will have been lower than 4.6. A UF, for example, adds .5 for Honors and 1 for AP. Sounds like maybe what you’ve done.
And I don’t think in school or out of school activities impact. ECs, if you’re in the group that is looked at holistically, should have tenure and depth of course, but what you described sounds great.
I hope your daughter gets in but for anyone deferred or rejected anywhere, there’s a tendency to wonder why and I don’t think you can ever know.
Your student sounds superb and I’m sure will have good success at UGA or elsewhere.
Congratulations to all who got accepted!
I need some advice. My son was accepted to both UGA (Cognitive Science AB) and UGA Honors, for which we are grateful, but with zero merit scholarship aid. He has a 4.8 W / 4.0 UW, 1570 SAT, lots of AP and IB courses. He cannot afford to go there paying OOS and for sure will not qualify for financial aid.
We were hoping to be invited for the Foundation Scholarship but since he didn’t qualify for merit aid, I’m thinking it is a sign he will not make the short list for that either. Is this a correct assumption?
This has been an emotional rollercoaster for us and and if we know for sure he will not get any merit aid, we would rather move on with our lives. He wanted to study Cognitive Science but I will try to convince him a good STEM education someplace else is just as good. I don’t think it’s healthy for him to be hoping, for nothing.
What do you think? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
I forgot to say my son is also a National Merit Semifinalist although I’m not sure it makes any difference.
Yeah I knew UGA’s recalculates and I know her UGA’s gpa will be lower than a 4.6. I just recalc’d based on UGA’s rules. 4.1 w/o senior year. With senior year/first semester becomes a 4.3. So maybe that will help her get over the hump! She’s taking it all like a champ and I know she’ll be happy wherever she goes
My daughter got money (two years ago) at time of admit but others get it later.
If it’s unaffordable now, but you want to see how it plays out, then move ahead with others while not making final decisions.
Would a half OOS or full OOS waiver bring into affordability ?
At NMSF, Tulsa is free / full ride and with NMF, Alabama ( a like school, yes with easier admissions but greater merit), will give 5 years free tuition, four year housing and stipend). There are others.
I don’t think hanging on a thread for a Foundations is realistic. Maybe it comes but it’s not realistic to hope.
You are correct - he can get a wonderful and rigorous education at many schools - and those that buy kids in like him - will have lots of research, rigor, and many other like kids.
Good luck.
It says only core classes are included in gpa calculation. The only B she’s ever received was in religion freshman year at private Catholic high school…anyone know if that would be included?
