University of Georgia Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

My D22 wanted cognitive sciences as well, but with not that many colleges offering it, she ended up choosing neuroscience and behavior as her major (she landed at Notre dame). She knows she can choose classes that fit the cognitive science mold.

Chiming in because I have a few recent senior as well who was admitted to UGa so I’m perusing all the same schools I looked at 2 years ago

When does UGA post Honors decisions? Should we assume because our daughter was not invited with her acceptance that she wont get asked later in fhe admission cycle.

Not at all! UGA Honors only auto-accepts a few students with their EA decision. All others are asked to complete the Honors application; Honors typically releases those decisions in March.

On a funny note, our daughter applied to both Honors and CURO when she applied. She didnt realize the auto admit thing :slightly_smiling_face:

My son was also accepted to Honors at South Carolina, with in-state tuition plus. We don’t know what the “plus” is yet. Perhaps he could develop his own major there. He also has good merit aid at Michigan State which has minors in Cognitive Science and Neuroscience. So there are options. Although we think UGA is the best fit.

Congrats - top rated Honors program in the country. The campus is very different than UGA’s though so I can see having strong feeling on one but not the other.

They have a neuro minor and an independent study.

They also have a make your own major.

I’ll just say this - don’t get hooked on a dream. There are likely many schools where he can excel. Many. You are not happy with the cost of UGA. Therefore it’s a reach. It’s not his best fit.

Too many kids think - I have to be here and only here. It’s nonsense !!!

There are many like schools to UGA. They also may not be affordable. But some may be.

Unaffordable = can’t be considered. High reach.

You need to make that clear to him. Now. B4 he digs in deeper.

U of SC is a great get as are others - and as UGA is if it hits budget (but not if it doesn’t).

Anyone else get a message from UGA Fin Aid last night with the subject “2024-2025 UGA Estimated Award”? Excited to see a first pass at fin aid, but after spending an hour trying to initiate/validate Arches and DUO accounts through UGA IT sites (on desktop and phone), it seems impossible to get into for new admits (kept getting error messages along the lines of “you do not have permission…”). Assuming this HAS to be a mistake to send out after hours and when the school will be closed the next 10 days!

It is great that he has so many fantastic options. Don’t give up hope though! Our S22 was given a scholarship from UGA in March, so it definitely happens.

I had the same problem. Could be a IT issue.

Admitted EA OOS and have never visited the campus. Does anyone know if/when they might do admitted students days? We are trying to plan ahead for the spring semester and it would be nice to get an idea of when they usually do something like this.

pretty sure I took my daughter to UGA late last March for admitted students day- we went to U of Florida 1st and then drove to UGA. UGA did a nice job with it and I think my daughter was impressed- although she didn’t really make her decision to go there until later when she got into Honors. the UF day was really not good in comparison which was a shame.
She is from OOS and she is really happy at UGA.

Is there anyone else OOS who was accepted here EA and deferred at Clemson. This happend to me and I find it really odd because UGA for OOS is way more competitive than Clemson.

Clemson is a good school getting more selective as well. But these things won’t always make sense. Sometimes deferrals just happen because there isn’t time to review every application. Or it might have to do with different in-state/OOS strategies. Or yield protection. Who knows.
Overall stats of admitted kids might show a difference in selectivity. Prob will.
Or they might not. Time will tell.

There was an accepted at Berkeley last year and not at SDSU or an in at MIT and not at BU.

And that’s just the ones we read here.

I’m sure it happens all the time…and then at schools that admit by major, it likely happens far more than you’d think.

I’m still not sure how worried I should be about UGA being too southern.

Interesting. I’m sure if you can get into UGA, you have a really good shot getting into Clemson the 2nd time around.

this needs an in-person visit for you to decide (or a re-visit if you already went once). it is the south. Athens has good food but it’s mostly southern comfort style (although we have had very good burritos and Thai food as well). 80% of the students are from Georgia, but many of those are from Atlanta and are Northeast in vibe. most of my daughters friends are from the Northeast, Atlanta, and Florida. you will hear Southern accents a lot.

I would say the predominant vibe isn;t so much Southern as it is College Town. that’s the real dominant trait. Athens is not Chicago or LA or NYC. there aren’t tons of museums or movie stars around. you will drink more beer and less manhattans.
