University of Georgia Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

While it definitely was a tragedy and truly awful, it wasn’t that she was driving and swerved to avoid a deer and hit a tree. She was murdered.

And yes I have visited. I guess you assume I know nothing about anything.

One last thing in response to your post, which appeared to challenge me, this happened on campus. I have seen people mention on this thread about other college cities being dangerous. That is true, but this happened right on campus. There is no denying this fact. You can try to spin it all you want, but in my opinion, there should be some concerns here unless you live in an alternate universe. Also, one other factor that people seem to leave out, UGA spends an awful lot of time talking about how it’s such a great place to be a student. In my opinion, when you boast often about greatness, it is a lot harder when you stumble.

It is unfortunate you read my post that way and went on the defensive.

Have a nice weekend.

And I didn’t go on the defensive, I went on the offensive, because you appeared to want to avoid facts. Let me bring you back to a simple fact, the most violent of crimes was committed against a woman on the University of Georgia campus.

yes, and it’s awful, but it is nowhere near the main part of campus where students typically are. it was in woods on the fringe of campus. and the town and school are responding. doesn’t lessen the tragedy, but I personally wouldn’t let it keep my kid from going to UGA unless I wanted a really safe small gated protected isolated campus. And if that campus exists it’s not a place my kid would have agreed to go.

None? That is painting with a broad brush

by “none” dramamama is referring I believe to the parents he/she knows with kids at UGA. not a broad brush.

As noted in the preceding sentence, I was referring to people I know personally. That was by no means a statement about all UGA parents or students. So I disagree, but thank you for pointing out so I could clarify for anyone else who misread my post.

Ok….I misread it…. as someone who does not read this thread very often it just seems that people are being pretty dismissive of what happened

I don’t think anyone is being dismissive. It is a horrible tragedy, and I have friends who attended the young woman’s funeral. The community is rallying behind them, and the university is taking the matter very seriously and acting accordingly. No one in the university community is trying to sweep anything under the rug.

My comment was in response to a one-sentence post from a poster with a habit of dropping in school forums only to stir up trouble.

Reminder that back and forth between two posters needs to be taken to PM. And, this forum is supposed to be a friendly and welcoming place.

There are no restrictions to who can respond to posts.

Thank you for understanding.

I’m not a moderator on this thread.

Hopefully @billythegoldfish will stick around because as the parent of a current student their input should be appreciated.

To be clear, my moderator instruction to stop the back and forth was not a suggestion. Posts deleted.

I’m sorry to see everyone get so upset, but it’s a measure of how upsetting the situation is. We can’t make the world safe for our children. I just felt uneasy leaving a smoothie shop (public space, in a good neighborhood), because a man with bad hygiene and a “weird” vibe was sitting in there enjoying his purchased smoothie while the attractive very young woman was working alone there. It is the type of place that probably has an emergency call button, but still. I am not deterred from sending my child to UGA if she chooses it in a month. I know the school quite well, and there are many other schools I know well at which this tragedy could happen, including the school at which I teach. It is small, but there is just enough of a woods patch to make things dangerous if someone walked around the lake alone. It is a very long shot, but predators take advantage of circumstances. All we can do is protect others and warn them as best we can.

That tragedy was horrific, and by no means do I want to diminish it, but unfortunately, this happens in the quietest of suburbs. Our sleepy suburban town recently had a stalker do the same to a young woman a few blocks from my daughter’s high school. It was weeks before he was caught, and it kept us all unnerved. Sending her off to any campus next year will be stressful. But it shouldn’t be a poor reflection of the school. I commend whatever efforts UGA makes to improve security.

This was a random act by a predator. Unfortunately this could happen anywhere. 2 people were shot a few months ago 2 blocks from the business school at the University of Florida. In our society it is impossible to guarantee safety on a college campus or anywhere. UGA has acted strongly with a proposal for more safety measures, better lighting, extended shuttle service, call boxes with lights and video feeds, more cameras, etc. Unfortunately, none of these measures would’ve made a difference in this case, which just goes to show the random nature of this crime.

Major leap with your analysis. You come to the conclusion that if all of the safety measures you mentioned were in place, this still would have happened. Quite Illogical.

Also, you mentioning crimes occurring off campus at UF is like comparing apples to broccoli.

It’s really not, and it just shows your unfamiliarity with UGA and this situation. This happened miles from central campus (not 2 blocks from the business school) in a wooded recreational area during the middle of the day with hundreds of people around. There have been reports that she ran this route regularly, and belief that the predator knew her schedule and had been watching her. Also reports that she ran through his apartment complex as a shortcut to reach the trail, and that is where they had intersected before. Not too different from a child being grabbed out of their parents yard in a suburban area after school by a predator. You can take every single precaution and things like this still occur. Lights and cameras would not have prevented it, However, cameras were instrumental in him being caught in less than 24 hours.

I understand though from your comments that no amount of knowledge or information will sway you from your position. You seem to have an anti-UGA bias that has existed for long before this so I won’t go back and forth. Have a good day.
