There are many frosh who can go home on weekends/ once a month.
About half of students live in campus housing.
Depends on if an OOS student is invited or self nominates for a Living Learning Program, or joins a club or activity with almost daily opportunities. (Such as Marching Band, athletic clubs, service or faith based clubs, arts, etc). Greek life appeals to some as well as service groups (Do Good Terp Thon )or, academic coed frats.
Can see enrollment by geography. (Works on a computer, not my smartphone.). If Iâm reading correctly, 33 students from Oregon enrolled in Fall of 2023(and 102 from Washington state).
There is a map that shows how many students are enrolled at UMD from each State. There are not many from Oregon, but there seems to be some students from every State.
One thing my D and her roommate did on the first or second evening of Move-In was to go through their Dorm room to room and introduce themselves. That can be a start.
What jobs are in highest demand for Maryland Grads?
Based on information gathered through the most recent Graduation Surveys and employers currently recruiting on campus, below are a few of the trends the Center has followed.
Computer Science, High Tech and IT. The âdigitization of everythingâ has driven a steadily increasing demand for graduates with computer skills. University of Maryland students enjoy competitive recruiting for positions in software development, programming, information technology, systems administration and web design.
Engineering. Demand in engineering fields remains steady, with electrical, computer and chemical engineering leading the way. Due to the proximity of NASA and prominent defense industry companies, mechanical and aerospace recruiting is also robust.
Intelligence, Defense, National Security and Foreign Affairs. The Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia region is home to the intelligence, defense and diplomacy communities. Frequent recruiters include the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the US Department of State. Career Shuttles take students on site visits to many types of employers, and frequent destinations have included the World Bank, the Institute for Defense Analyses, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In addition, the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is headquartered at the University of Maryland.
Public Sector. The University of Marylandâs proximity to Washington DC and Annapolis opens many opportunities for UMD graduates in federal and state agencies. High concentrations of graduates may be found in the US Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, the Treasury, Energy, Agriculture, Education and many other agencies. Every year graduates report converting internships into full-time positions on Capitol Hill. The Smithsonian Institution is also an active recruiter on campus.
Healthcare. Many UMD graduates pursue advanced degrees for jobs in healthcare, including doctors, physicianâs assistants, nurses, therapists, healthcare administration, and public health education. At the bachelor degree level, medical scribes, professionals that chart physician-patient encounters during examinations and emergency rooms, represent another rapidly growing healthcare role.
Accounting, Banking, Finance, Consulting and Supply Chain Management. These business fields have retained solid job prospects for UMD graduates. Accounting firms are among the top recruiters at Maryland, including Deloitte, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Ernst & Young. Capital One leads the pack of financial institutions that interview on-campus. Consulting firms such as Accenture and Booz Allen Hamilton also hire a significant number of UMD graduates.
Education. Graduates from UMDâs College of Education are heavily represented in Maryland K-12 school systems, most prominently in the Montgomery County and Prince Georgeâs County public schools. UMDâs education graduates enjoy the highest placement rate of all majors.
Scientific Research. The National Institutes of Health are headquartered in Bethesda and attract many graduates into research roles, as does the US Food and Drug Administration.
When I went to UMD in the 90s, I came from Washington State and knew no one. I met my now spouse on the first day of school and am still in touch with people I met at Orientation. Making connections is about the people, not the geography. Good luck to your student!
Agree! She is eager and ready to make friends, Iâm just curious to see how inclusive different schools may be given the large portion of in-state kids and existing networks. For example, I wouldnât worry about sending an east coast kid to oregon or UW. Iâve heard UMass can be challenging in this regard, just wondered about UMD as we get closer to results.
Many of the in-staters want nothing to do with the kids from their high schools and are looking specifically to make friends with new people. They donât care where their friends come from. My family, though, is partial to Oregonians.
The University of Maryland class of 2028 Facebook page just posted this:
Now the Reminders/Info: -------------- As a reminder to most of you, decisions are typically released the last Friday of January. If they do not go out on the last Friday, the earliest they would be going out would be the following Monday. Students will receive their decisions through the Terps Application Portal. They donât necessarily need to wait for the email from admissions if they start hearing that decisions are available-- they can just log in. ALL applicants who had a complete application by November 1 should receive a decision on the same day. Decisions roll out over the course of a few hours as they upload into the TAP system-- but they all come the same day. IF YOUR STUDENT DID NOT GET A DECISION - You will need to have them call or email (calling is preferred) admissions in the morning of the next business day. Admissions will be able to assist. Prior to release the Housing and Dining Forms will load in the Terps Application Portal for all applicants. This form is not an indication that your student will/will not be admitted-- it loads for everyone. Scholarship information will not be included in the admission letter. Notifications on all scholarships from the Deanâs awards to the Banneker/Key come later through separate notifications â typically in February with BK coming first. Included in the Admission Decision Letter would be any invitations to living & learning or other special programs, term of admission, a link to an admitted student checklist, Residency (in vs. out of state) Classification, the studentâs University ID Number (UID), and the students admitted major (if they applied for an LEP). If you feel your studentâs residency was missclassified (youâve only lived in MD but theyâre listed as out of state/non-resident) â Email reclass@umd.edu IMMEDIATELY with the studentâs full name, UID, and supporting information. After admission, students should visit the Admitted Student Checklist for their admission term and immediately begin to follow the âActivate Directory ID & Set Up MFAâ steps-- this DOES NOT commit them to UMD but will be necessary for them to be able to register for Admitted Student Open Houses, view financial aid, and other critical information. If you have other quesitons related to decision release or your studentâs decision, please review Admissionsâ Decision Release FAQ at: Office of Undergraduate Admissions | Freshman Admission Decision FAQs
Another thing to mention that might bring students from all over is the National History Day Contest. My older D from Washington state ended up really liking the campus because of National History Day. Otherwise it would not have been on her radar.
Many fond memories of us parents sweating it out in the hot, hot dorms during June
My son is a freshman CS (surprise!) major from Virginia just a short trip around the beltway. He knew of 2 other people from his large public HS attending and has yet to see them. No issue making friends. He is in a honors program which really helped. Met people during an overnight orientation on campus over the summer. His buddies come from Illinois and the suburban counties of Montgomery, Howard as well as Baltimore.
Hes had a blast. Grades were great. Joined a club sports team and applied for one of them many CS clubs. He only came home twice first semester. Its an awesome place.
I had an email thread with their admissions team that they stopped replying to after I replied on Dec 20. Is it over or did they stop replying because of break? I even sent a follow up last Friday
