I honestly feel physically sick thinking about the decision tommorow. I’m a good student (very strong ECs and a 1490 SAT) but had a really weak freshman year and sophomore year because of extenuating circumstances and family stuff. Had a major upward trend afterwards and am taking hard classes now but am terrified because of my low gpa and class rank (3.77 W and ~200/520). I am so incredibly indescribably scared it is making me physically nauseous. I’m in state and UMD is basically my top choice considering price and quality. I feel like I have a lot riding on this decision and am just SO worried.
Good luck everyone!
what major?
Engineering. If they don’t want me there is it possible to be offered a spot at a different major?
I’m also hoping to do a philosophy minor and maybe a music minor as well.
Sure but if you want to be an engineer, why would you do that ? Tons of great engjneerimg schools out there.
I applied to quite a few but UMD is the cheapest by far. It’s a good school for lots of other stuff as well. I’m not too committed to engineering so I’d be open to other stuff
I’m not really planning on being an engineer but want it as a stepping stool for other stuff on the more business side.
Can anyone provide details on the process for LLCs? It sounds like some kids are invited to them? About what percent are invited?
Anyone getting an error from force.com when trying to access the portal?
Hang in there ! Put some good thoughts out there in the universe . We can’t control why or how some of these decisions are made .
Hang in there ! Good luck !
Are you in the UMD Parent FB group? Staff in there who answer questions and provide lots of info.
First applicants are admitted to UMD and then the different advising colleges can decide whether or not to put you into the major. If you get in, but don’t get into Engr, you’ll get put into Letters and Sciences. Engineering requires you to take the prerequisite gateway classes and then you can transfer in. Good luck!
LLCs are a way of making a large college smaller. An easy example is the Honors College at UMD. The Honors College is actually composed of 8 or so subprograms and each invited student fills out a form indicating which ones they prefer and why. The largest one is University Honors and the smallest one is probably ACES.
Students are then told which one they are in, and all the students in a given subprogram are assigned to live in the same Dorm. That is their Living Learning Community (LLC).
Scholars works the same way and there are a few others.
That’s the simple version of LLCs
I’m not sure how reliable this website is but it says more than 50% of freshmen are in an LLP/LLC.
Yep I get the concept (and love it) but what seems different at UMD is that admissions controls the process via invites, etc. and at most other schools kids opt in ( except for honors, obvi)
At UMd everything is a privilege
IF you don’t get in (and that is IF) you have options. You can appeal, you can call admissions and ask about applying to a different major, worst case scenario if your heart is set on attending UMD is you can go somewhere else and transfer if you rally want to go. (just want you to not get sick b/c it will be ok) I am crossing my fingers and sending good vibes your way that you do get in.
@anonuser1234 is 100% correct @MKJ3 and gave you some great advice. Wishing you all the best to you tomorrow. Keep your chin up, stay positive and good luck!
Yes, that is true. Admissions does control which students get into LLCs. Students can self-nominated for entry into the Honors College, but I don’t know how many do that and what the success rate is.
Keep in mind that Dorm assignments are not permanent for 4 years. Many students switch Dorms after Freshman year and move off Campus for Junior and Senior year.
My D was in the Honors College, but moved out of her LLC Dorm for her Sophomore year.
The other option not mentioned is to go elsewhere - and have a wonderful four years.
UMD is a fantastic school - both my kid applied and were admitted - but neither attend.
It’s a fantastic school but not the only fantastic school in America so saying worst case you go elsewhere and transfer in is an option - but not really a great option. Finding that school that loves you and loving it back - a much better option IMHO. Going somewhere with the intent of transferring is not good.
Students who go elsewhere will likely have just as good a four years as they would have at UMD.
Is the college park scholars super competitive? i.e. is it the kids who were just below honors?
@OregonMom2024
My S18 made UMd scholars (no merit). 35 ACT. Probably around 99 UW GPA. Swimmer
