Great mindset! Good luck to you!

Admissions does not share the number who applied for CS for fall; all we see when making LEP decisions are those admitted to UMD for fall who want CS, and that number was lower than last year’s.

All the info for fall 2024 (and future) freshmen who did not get admitted to CS is posted clearly: CS LEP FAQ (Effective Fall 2024) | Undergraduate Computer Science at UMD

Anything in engineering is still a non-competitive LEP, meaning anyone who meets gateways and applies on time will get in: Limited Enrollment Program : University of Maryland

So Computer Engineering COULD be an alternative to CS for a student admitted to LS? Thanks for all the information.

Accepted Spring 2025 to Letters and Sciences
Applied Smith.
OOS public - Asian male
UW 3.57/W 4.3
SAT 1550 (not superscored)
9 APs (3 senior year)/lots of ECs/interesting essays and explanation for poor grades in sophomore year (something difficult happened).

Is UMD’s business program good in job opportunities, salary, and name recognition (for job search); I’m planning to work in California (preferably LA) or Seattle. For context, I’m planning on transferring from Letters and Sciences to Smith later in college.

Hi - I have a kid in Honors, so I am curious why that would make it a top contender?

Awesome. Thank you for responding.

In general, many jobs today are found on indeed/linkedin so you can end up anywhere.

Here are the career outcomes. Make sure you set the table to undergrad (it populates both when opening) and the specific major of interest.

Of course, more will be placed in the mid-Atlantic given the location and density of businesses.

Good luck.

The same for my son. Admitted Engineering but no special mention of additional invitations. For the person who asked about visiting, there is an admitted students day on April 13th. Click the ā€œnext stepsā€ on the portal.

Any insight on when and how UMD handles merit?

Last year 15% of non athletes- first years received awards averaging $6733. 13.5% of all non athletes get - likely less because the Dean’s Scholarship is just two years.

I had one got $5K and one got $0 (into an LEP).

The BK is only to people in Honors and a full ride.

The President’s Scholarship is most likely and is $2K to $12.5K.

The Dean’s will get $1500 to $4500 for two years.

Most will get neither.

What the criteria for choosing is - I don’t know - but over the years, I’ve seen Honors and Scholars get nil and those with no special programs get money.

Good luck.

Hi! If there was no mention of merit in the decision letter does that mean none is coming? I know each University does it differently

When my daughter applied, she didn’t find out about scholarship until later. There was no mention of merit in the decision letter. I think the process is still the same, and you should find out about financial aids sometimes in March.

I’ll give you my perspective as both as a Smith alum and a parent of a current applicant. We now live in CA. My kid (CA public school) also applied to Smith, but got L&S instead. It is very possible to transfer to Smith, once you meet all requirements/GPA. Some schools it’s impossible if you’re not a pre-admit, but that’s not the case at MD. I’m stating the obvious to say that the mid-atlantic/DC metro area has a great alumni network. However, as someone who now lives in southern CA, I don’t cross paths with that many terps in the business world. I used to work for a very big bay-area based tech company, and Oregon (Lundquist) and UW (Foster) had better name recognition though Smith is higher ranked than Lundquist, etc.
At the end it’ll be up to you, how much you hustle and land internships on the west coast. The career services connections are mostly in the DC metro area jobs, everything else will up to you.
The Smith program itself is excellent, at the end most undergrad business schools have similar curriculum and it’ll be up to you how to differentiate yourself.

Nope. 20% of admitted freshmen are offered merit scholarships of some sort based on their Nov 1 application for admission. Separate pools for MD res and OOS. Some majors and colleges on campus have their own scholarships for incoming students. CMNS does not - they are for continuing students who have a UMD GPA.

UMD makes decisions about merit and sends out prior to March 1. None have gone out yet.
