University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

My daughter in the 20% I guess she was admitted for engineering for fall but without any kind of honors or anything mentioned

Congrats to everyone accepted! We are OOS, my son applied undecided, and was accepted to the Scholars program. Does this prevent him from majoring in any specific field like CS or business like at some other universities? Also…if there was any merit, or other, aid would it have been noted in the acceptance letter?

I know - I was asking about Computer Engineering which is in different school altogether. Most LEPs - incl comp Sci before this year - have been easy to transfer into upon meeting gateway requirements - I wasn’t sure if Computer engineering fell into that class of LEP. I may just reach out to the school of engineering.

He may be able to satisfy all three gateway requirements with AP if that’s allowed. Gotten 5s on all 7 or 8 APs so far but two of them will be taken in May this year.

Sorry. I saw cs in the note. You were using to compare.

Calling seems logical. Fortunately they don’t have a note like I just showed for engineering.

Good luck.

Try to make sure that his official AP scores are sent as soon as they can be. If UMD has them prior to Orientation, he may be able to start Computer Engineering in the first semester.

As far as I know, there is no limit on the use of AP test score credits, but if there is one, it is well above 3

Both Business and CS are the only 2 LEPs that can be difficult to transfer into. Both use a more holistic process and students usually need to exceed the stated requirements in order to Transfer.

Any other LEP should not be a problem as long as the gateway requirements are met

Please message me if you get official response and I’ll do the same! Thank you!

This is true - and we will keep this in mind. However - given the schools he’s been accepted to, it’s going to come down to economic value and, if I am reading correctly, Freshmen Connection students are not eligible for merit scholarships which means as an OOS student, the tuition would be sticker price. Can’t really justify that cost when he’s been accepted to both PSU and Pitt where we are in-state.

My daughter as well. This school would be a top contender for her if Honors were included.

May I ask how we find the information for acceptance days? We have not toured UMD yet, so we’d like to get in a tour to help in the decision. Thanks in advance!

None of the LLPs affect your major. They simply provide extra enrichment and/or the ability to live in dorms with others in your program.

Go to the school’s website.

I wouldn’t put too much hype on Honors. Honors at UMD is different than at some other colleges, including some other Maryland universities. My son has enjoyed some of his University Honors classes and a couple others felt like a waste of time. It doesn’t hold a huge prestigious weight. Lots of other opportunities at UMD to help round out a resume.

thank you so much for your detailed response! im not crossing UMD off my list just yet. i emailed them to see if it was possible to declare CoE or something else computing related as my major. i plan to self-nominate for scholars when it open on march 15  but in the meantime i also got accepted to umich and im hoping to get CS through advanced selection there, so i feel confident i will end up somewhere i will be happy !

Congrats on both. Great gets. But study what you truly want. Not something ancillary.

CS can be done successfully from sooooooo many places.

Good luck.
