We had a slight downturn in the number of admitted students interested in CS who were admitted to UMD for fall this year, but not a huge one.
Nope, nearly 80% of admitted students for fall 2024 were invited to some sort of special program like Honors, Scholars, FIRE, CIVICUS, BioFIRE, Carillon, etc.
It is not limited in the same way as CS. Limited Enrollment Program : University of Maryland
No, not tough to get into BSCI - all who meet the requirements and apply as internal transfers (current students) get in: Limited Enrollment Program : University of Maryland
Only 10% of BK interview invitations are to OOS students.
Carillon sounds like a great opportunity. I’ve read their FAQs.
Pros/cons?
Anyone have personal experience with Carillon (parent of current student)?
My daughter was an exercise science major at UD honors, it’s a great school. At the honors graduation, they presented each graduate and where they were headed. Very impressive list of universities and companies! My daughter landed at BU for her DPT, her bff’s ended up at John’s Hopkins for nursing and northeastern for law school.
Thanks for your insights @STEMX.
Can you please clarify what that means? Fewer applicants expressed interest in the CS major?
Was there an overall rise in the number of applications?
Would be great if your office could share admission stats like some other schools do.
I see. I guess that explains it.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions here. Much appreciated.
Did anyone admitted into engineering get an invite to the engineering learning living communities, Flexus or Virtus? Or know if those are application only? Hard to tell from website.
And anyone know when the admitted student days will be? My child would like to visit but looks like nothing on their calendar yet. Just says coming this spring.
Congrats to all those accepted!
Do you know if the gateway requirements can be met by AP transfer credits?
Last year there was a separate application for Flexus and Virtus. My daughter is currently a Freshman in Flexus.
Thank you! Does she like it?
Does this mean if you meet gateway requirements, you are admitted to the major (or is it more unpredictable than that? Thank you for sharing!
My older son (currently at UMD) was accepted to L&S instead of directly to CS, and he also was not invited to honors but was invited to Carillon. This was despite having higher stats than yours and a very well-rounded application. He had friends (including the class salutatorian) with even stronger applications than his but who were not invited to honors.
Your stats are very impressive and you should be wonderfully proud of all that you have accomplished, but unfortunately the UMD pool of applicants is extremely competitive. UMD has to pick and choose from a massive number of admitted students who have exceptional stats. The vast majority, as strong as they are, just won’t make the cut.
Personally, I wouldn’t let the lack of an honors invitation deter you from UMD. That said, the new limitations on transferring from L&S (or any other major) into CS is something to think about when making your decision.
Best of luck to you!
A student has to fill out and submit an Internal Transfer form
Understood but it has to go through admissions decision for review right? Is it guaranteed if meeting gateway requirements (like CS was before this year) or is it up to admin discretion?
Based on this alone - I think the student would be taking a big chance. You’d hope the school will update guidance in time for students to make a decision. But if I were a parent, I’d attempt to get my kid to move UMD to the side and work toward another and revisit if new guidance comes in time.
UMD is wonderful but certainly not the only CS school out there.
“As a current University of Maryland student whose major is not currently Computer Science, you are considered an internal transfer applicant. Computer Science is a limited enrollment program (LEP) major at the University of Maryland (UMD). There are forthcoming updates to the LEP guidelines which will be effective for students starting at UMD In Fall 2024 or later.”
She likes that there are others on her floor taking some of the same classes as her. Last semester the Flexus class required them to checkout different resources on campus and from what she had told me, this semester the class will will work on resume writing, networking and the career fair. Last semester was an easy A and they live in Easton Hall, which has air conditioning. I think the class does a great job showing them what resources are available to engineering majors. I don’t think she would seek these things out on her own. She has a nice group of friends from Flexus and is making plans to room with some of them in the fall.
Thank you! Sounds great!
As far as I can tell, there is NO discretion involved. Both my D and her husband did Internal Transfers into LEPs. My D even used AP Credit to satisfy a Gateway requirement.
I believe that if there were cases of discretion that prevented an Internal Transfer, it would have been posted on this forum or on the UMD reddit forum.
I am excluding Business and CS which both now have a more holistic review for Internal Transfers.
