Yes, correct. Confirmed by STEMX up thread.
My D24 accepted CS honor college invitations. She is considering signing up for dorms. She said ACES is the best but small. Any insight-benefits/downsides? (BTW, she is not interested in majoring in cyber security)
Does FIRE program have any LLC or dorm associated with it? Or is it just research but everyone in program is scattered throughout dorms? Thank you.
UMD does not offer a cybersecurity major, only a minor. Aces is a great program but it is all about cybersecurity. If that doesnât interest your daughter she might want to pick a different honors program.
ACES is good, but being small there is no guarantee that your D will get that one. ACES deliberately picks some non-CS students for diversity of thought in that particular program.
But that aside there is no harm in getting exposed to cyber security. My D was in University Honors and found it to be pretty easy, but that program has been changed since her time in it.
I donât think there are any downsides. A student can always drop out of it. Benefits are access to Honors Only classes that are generally limited to 20 students. My D a few of those. She said they were kind of demanding but in a good way.
There is an Honors Citation Ceremony in the Memorial Chapel every year for the students who have completed their citation requirements. Representatives from various Tech/Research Companies and Government Agencies usually attend. They know where to look for talent.
UMD was removed from my daughterâs list after a $3000 a year award, she applied to many and it was going to be a lot more expensive (UMASS gave enough to bring it close to in state).
We were in the same boat with both our S16 and S18 accepted to UMd (one scholars, no honors, no merit)
Agree that itâs more the student than the school for undergrad engineering. But you do have to consider where they will settle after for some majors or some careers plans We had one at UConn that ended up on the Hill in DC because he was in politics and one at Pitt that stayed in Piittsburgh unexpectedly.
For our third, S24, which is thinking about careers in non-profits, museums, archives, etc the DC area and UMd make a TON of sense. But compared to our flagship Rutgers itâs a small fortune. So, have to consider where they might land after, how much of a premium is worth it to be near DC, and perhaps if they will go to grad school so none of that really matters as much as having money left.
There are a lot of firms that hire engineers around Boston but also a lot of firms and agencies around DV and NoVa.
Tough call.
Completely off topic but⊠based on your username I took you to be a NYC guy.
Thank you very much!
hi- is anyone else having trouble creating/setting up their directory ID? is it not available yet? (i know it can take up to 2 days) just want to make sure itâs not some kind of issue on my end specifically
DS24 accepted OOS Aerospace Engineering with Scholars invite
UWTD 3.8, WTD 4.4
68 DE hours with Assoc of Engineering degree expected in May (Calc 1 thru 3, Linear Algebra, Calc based Physics 1 & 2, Chemistry, Bio)
DE grades good but not stellar due to some issues he explained in extra essay session
35 ACT
Civil Air Patrol AE Officer
State & District Hunter Safety comps 1st or 2nd mulitple years
work
Depth of ECs but not breadth
Huge win because he has been deferred from Purdue & Michigan
He has also been accepted to U Alabama Huntsville and UNC Charlotte
does UMD allocate housing by when you fill out the housing form? and if so, how important is it to pay the housing deposit now for students who have been accepted into the honors college?
As of now, the CS minor is not limited, so all who meet gateways and apply can get in. Computer Science Minor | Undergraduate Computer Science at UMD
Nope, no specific building - scattered in freshman housing spaces.
Actually, we do have a cyber specialization of the CS major: Degree Requirements for CS Major | Undergraduate Computer Science at UMD
Thanks! So the gateway classes required for minor application are not restricted or reserved for those admitted direct to CS major? Anyone can register for those?
Yes, you are correct!
So for anyone interested in CS major and didnât get in directly, we compared the Math major/CS minor with CS major requirements and there is significant overlap in required courses. The big difference is CMSC major has like 5 additional higher level CMSC course requirements over the math/CS combo (while math has about 8 additional courses over CS major and is more math heavy. Especially If youâre coming in with a lot of AP credits, and like math, this may be an alternative in addition to computer engineering.
When I called and checked, admissions replied that my daughters application is complete before Nov 1st⊠Still havenât heard anything about her results. Is anyone else in the same status?
My sophomore is a double major CS and Math. Can attest there is a lot of overlap. Furthermore, I donât know many employers who would see a math major with good grades and not think âsmart.â
