University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

DD has Purdue+honors+presidential scholarship for Cybersecurity and UMD CS(Cybersecurity). From what I read from this forum, it is highly unlikely she will get any scholarship from UMD. Is UMD better than Purdue?

that’s correct; decisions will be released by feb 1

By scholars invitation do you mean the Banneker/Key? My son NMF, 4.0 W/4.8 UW was accepted but we didn’t hear anything about an invite. If sure he is not invited, he will withdraw his application. There is no way he can afford OOS tuition without it so there’s no point in taking up someone else’s spot.

It’s unfortunate naming but Honors, Scholars, and Banneker-Key Scholars are not the same.

Honors is more selective than Scholars which is another living learning special program.

The B-K Scholars are selected only from within the Honors college invitees.

ā€œ The [Banneker/Key Scholarship] is the most prestigious merit scholarship offered to incoming UMD freshmen. It can cover up to the full cost of tuition, mandatory fees, housing and food, a book allowance, and includes admission to the Honors College……
….All freshman applicants who are admitted to the Honors College are considered for the Banneker/Key Scholarship. No additional application materials are required….ā€

No. Merit awards have not been decided. Scholars=College Park Scholars, which is an LLP like the Honors College.

Both are strong programs. Affordability and how she finds the vibe at each campus should probably be bigger factors.

I’d suggest not withdrawing from anywhere. You have til May 1.

Let everything play out.

I know from the UGA thread you have a tight budget. Unless something has moved, you haven’t yet gotten to it.

If there are 150 BK and 10% are out of state (I’ve read that, not sure if true), it’s unlikely you’ll get but you never know - stay in the race.

But you are applying to big flagships and not getting to where you want financially - start looking at the UTDs, Bamas, Maine and .other big flagships that will likely get you a similar experience, potentially similar outcome, and save the $$ that you need.

It’s the tradeoff - and those guys love you.

But don’t drop off here…May 1 is a long ways away.

You paid the app fee - so you own the acceptance til then.

Good luck.

Around 400 BK invites will go out to those invited to the Honors College. As long as the student attends the interview, they will get the partial tuition scholarship plus a book stipend. Some portion of the students who interview will get the full ride. Of all the 400 BK invites, around 150 will enroll (with either full or partial scholarships). I know quite a lot of BK Scholars and almost ALL of their parents say they weren’t expecting it and were completely surprised. It’s much, much more than high stats (since, by default, they had to have high stats to get into Honors) - holistic review.

Yes, my son’s application was complete by 11/1 and haven’t heard anything. Have you called the admissions office? My son sent an email this weekend but we haven’t heard anything yet.

I know someone else same thing, everything says complete by 11/1 and he also didn’t get a decision.

My son is in Smith and has gotten great internships both summers. A lot of employers come there for recruitment and they have their own career far just for business students.

Any thoughts on residence halls? Which ones might be most suitable for a CS freshman?

Students don’t get to choose their residence halls. Most freshman end up somewhere on north campus, which is the farthest spot from the computer science building. However, it is absolutely doable (my son is a freshman in comp sci). Plus they have gen eds, which could be anywhere on campus.

Dorm assignments are based on whatever LLC you are in, or are random if you are not in an LLC.

I would want to know - why you’d want to.

They are not the same.

If you want to study CS, go somewhere and study CS.

Engineering is not as competitive as CS or Business, as far as Internal Transfers are concerned

No dorms in immediate vicinity. Closest is probably 10-15 minute walk. My freshnan lives in Ellicott right next to FB stadium. Closest friend who is also a CS major lives on virtually the opposite side of campus by the business building. Both are surviving! Congratulations.
