Great. Then it’s odd. You should show them an image so they don’t penalize your chances.
Oh it seems as something else was missing. Sorry. Not sure how they record on the portal.

the thing is, the Cambridge curriculum does not provide what they want, they specifically want coursework, we only have final exams end of the year.
my checklist has been complete all this while, so I don’t really know what is up at this point
I would double check that. Perhaps there’s a misunderstanding about what UMD is looking for. They get plenty of international students (their website shows 127 countries represented), so you’re definitely not the first one applying from a Cambridge system. Perhaps, talk to your high school counselor or ask UMD to elaborate on their request.
Does anyone have information on the past or current acceptance rate for the undergraduate Computer Science program at the University of Maryland (UMD)?
UMD does not provide admission data for specific majors.
“ The Computer Science major is a limited enrollment program (LEP), and we receive thousands of applications each year. For the Fall 2024 admissions cycle, we expect to have spots for about 600 first year students. As such, direct admission to the Computer Science major as a first-year student is very competitive.”

2028 in-state applicant here, I still haven’t received my decision. All of my friends who applied early action heard back and all of my documents were submitted on time-- with a small 2-day deadline extension for the application itself granted by AOs because of a family medical emergency. When I called admissions on Monday, they told me that I was still considered for early action and that I would receive my decision by the end of this week.
Am I screwed? I’m debating calling again because I’m so nervous. UMD is my top school and I don’t want an unavoidable medical emergency to mess up my chances of admission.
You’re not “screwed”. In the past UMD has been accommodating to those like yourself. Hang in there.
Don’t call again. If they said you’ll have a decision by the end of the week, you need to be patient. Calling again won’t help. Good luck!
And follow up with an email in cases like UMD to ensure it’s complete.
I emailed them on Friday, when everyone else received their decisions, asking if there were any problems and clarifying my circumstances. UMD still has not replied and the portal is still empty.
Have you called?
I called them on Monday afternoon. They said that I would receive a decision by Feb 1 or the end of the work week. Vague. I know others who didn’t receive their decision immediately and who still have not been notified of anything yet.
UMD Maryland Day is April 27, 2024
Question for UMD admits/parents of admits:
For non-STEM majors, did you take physics and calculus in HS?
Our son is a junior and will be applying to a non-STEM program at UMD next year (likely Real Estate), so we were wondering how important it is to have physics vs. AP Environmental Science and also AP Calculus AB vs. AP Stats?
Thanks!
I expect that this may become a ‘back door’ in the future for a lot of Math majors. Currently many math majors double major in CS and many CS majors double major in Math (my son). The CS major requires 7 upper level CS courses -primarily 4xx course and/or CMSC 335 and CMSC 320 plus the 4 200 and 300 level courses. With the CS minor you receive permission for the 4 200 and 300 level courses plus two upper level courses-which would put you 5 courses short for the major. However, 3 of the upper level CS courses are cross listed with Math courses- 460 (or 466), 456 and 475. You can register for these courses in the Math department. This would leave you 2 upper level courses short which you can receive permission for if there is space available at start of classes. I doubt the CS Dept will turn students away if they have met all the course requirements or close. Of course the math major is quite rigorous and probably more difficult than the CS major so something to think about.
I see there are others like us who have still not received a decision. We checked again tonight and nothing. We sent an email through the portal, but I’ll probably call the admissions department tomorrow as a follow-up. Looking back through Reddit and old CC forums, these seems to have happened in each of the last few years. Not sure why it’s been a repeated problem, but it’s things like this that give me pause about how stuff might be administered by the University throughout our S24’s college experience. Not a great first impression.
That’s interesting - so if you get permission for the 2 extra courses, does that essentially mean you graduate with double major? Even though there was technically no space in CS?
Math is definitely not easy. You’d have to want that.
Correct- will be interesting to see how this is handled by both departments in the future. There are always open course slots at the start of classes- maybe not the most in demand courses or profs. You can view Schedule of Classes now to see open courses for example. However this path is not for everyone. The CS Dept requires an upper level concentration (ULC)- 12 upper level credits (usually 4 classes) from another major (math and stat can be combined). This is essentially equivalent to getting a math minor although the ULC requires 1 more course than the minor. Depending how you play your cards as a CS major, I think you would need as little as 4 additional Math/Stat courses to upgrade the math minor to a major- although these course typically include a couple high level theory courses such as Math 410.
