University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

Exactly. The “traditional” (although LLP required housing and the nicer dorms may provide a wrinkle) move is North Campus>South Campus>SCC/Courtyards>SCC/Courtyards, off campus. Off campus has a number of new apartments with more on the way but can be pricey. Also older apts, houses and greek.

Certainly your choice of course, but you have real world experience on the topic - so seems would be a great addition to hear your thoughts.

Two years ago DS who was NMF, high stats and rigor, was accepted to engineering. No honors, no communities. We’re OOS. We were then shocked when he got 8k offered per year as merit. He was offered honors at Purdue and was accepted at Michigan, Duke and Cornell.

This year DS with pretty much the same stats but not engineering got Carillon and no merit so far (we’re not holding out hope). For him living in an honors dorm is the draw. He has honors at UMass and a large merit offer. I think for the person who didn’t understand the draw of honors - for my son it’s just a knowledge that he’s pretty nerdy and thinks socially it’d be easier to find like minded friends through an honors program. He’d be fine without it but would feel more comfortable with it.

My D is like that too. She asked about the Business Honors because she wanted to do that, but the stat for out of state was 4.69 GPA or something. She was close though.

The following links states that UMD has extended the enrollment deadline to May 15, 2024

NO, it is not a train… I do not understand why so many people fail to read up on the purple line. It is NOT part of Metro. It is a lightrail, like what they have in Baltimore. Please read before writing about it: The Purple Line | Division of Administration

Any large state university that is stagnant/does not have construction is not where you want to go - construction=progress.

Thanks for clarifying. Its just expected to connect my daughter to the metro which will take her to the other side of the metro system where we live. So I dont mind the construction. But I still dont think its an issue because GW has a public transit system right inside its university. Aside from that, I dont really know much more about the Purple line or the MD rail system. If you have insight on any significant differences in how the Purple line operates and functions versus the metro, that would be very helpful for me since she’ll most likely to use it to visit me and other members of the family in our DC offices occasionally.

I think the big difference with GW (which is one of a kind) is - the campus really isn’t much. It’s sort of integrated into society.

Many kids don’t like - for example, roads running through a university (my daughter especially didn’t like) or a freeway (like JMU).

So having 5 train stops, for some, may be something they don’t like.

Many also don’t like construction or constant construction, although @STEMX makes a great point about progress, etc. Of course, transportation infrastructure is different than building…but each student would have to be comfortable with this.

In that they have a subway system? Does NYU do that? That was one of schools we did a virtual tour but forgot to ask about. We remember them saying the NYU campus was integrated into the city.

One of a few

I’m not as familiar with NYU - but when we were there, it’s even more within the city build than GW - which at least has that little central area.

It’s funny - my wife/daughter took the train to Foggy Bottom/GWU while I walked from the Capitol area…and then having to walk to Gtown…which is so cool to do…at least in warm weather.

I’m just noting that at a UMD, even with light rail, it’s vastly different…as is the campus vs. a GW. GW / the area is sort of set up for the mass transport.

I think it’s a huge win for UMD though and for those coming from far, I’m not sure how long the ride will be to DCA, but it’s another win for students!!

Need some guidance here
we are from WA state - our S24 got acceptance into Smith/business and Carillon communities. We are yet to decide, this is a strong option for us. Any info on aid/scholarship that UMD offers? Do we have to apply or if there is any automatic merit based scholarship?

As mentioned upthread, there is no automatic merit scholarship. Anyone awarded merit scholarship will receive an email by March 1.

There was some speculation based on past years that the emails would be sent out yesterday, but no one has reported receiving an email yet.

To clarify @13street , you don’t apply…it’ll be provided to you if it comes but historically 20% or less have earned it.

Even if you get it, short of the Bannaker Key, it will be minimal.

Congrats on a great admission.

Wow WA state. My D and I are weighing out options still. What made you consider applying so far? Curious what you know about the school versus what we’ve heard. My daughter will also be in Smith.

The vehicle moves multiple people on a rail line. What else would you call it?

Wow, the direct connect to the Marc and Amtrak are going to be great for going to NY! I wonder if this means the kids won’t need to go to Union Station for the train. I remember when I lived in the freshman dorms at UMD, half the floor was from NY. Gosh, so much has changed at UMD.

UMD and GW alum here, and I am truly flabbergasted at how much has changed! I’m also glad to see how many kids from Nova are going to both these schools:)
