thank you so much for the info - we are excited
UMD was on our list as EA due the reputation of the honors college. My son has applied to AU and GW - RD of course. Keen interest in the DC area, Pol Science, Econ, Business.
He applied to many colleges far and wide to see how far he can spread his wings, what the response rate and then decide. We encouraged that - it is good to have choice and now we are realizing that with a few acceptances already and waiting on a bunch of RD decisions, it is going to be crunchtime in Mar/Apr. Financial aid will of course factor into decision after the choice of major, college reputation, job prospects and location. Yes of course, the distance is a concern.
My daughter has a strong interest in global affairs. GW is on our list too. She applied to AU by accident, so thats on our list. My son actually works a GW and is considering getting a law degree there. Its seems like a good school for political affairs.
Donāt forget that if financially you canāt end up in DC, most have a DC program. My daughter spent the Fall in DC and interned at a think tank. She had a chance to attend AU and UMD but they werenāt her top and dad would have said no for being over the preset budget if they were !!
The point being, if youāre unable to make it work, you are not entirely shut out from the experience.
DD already accepted EA to Smith & she received the admissions info mailer.
Yesterday she received a business envelope with a window, sent from Admissions.
Sheās away the next few days, we havenāt opened it.
Silly Q but how does UMD notify about scholarships - would info arrive via a biz envelope?
Donāt think sheās gotten an email about potential awards, sheās on top of her email.
Via email.
Thatās likely the paper version of the original acceptance letter. On Facebook people reported getting one this week. Almost same wording as the Jan email. Expect merit emails may come out this Friday late afternoon.
I just looked at the website, and it says merit scholarships will come out by April 1.
Yes, it was the hard copy acceptance letter.
I believe they say merit offers by 3/1 and āfinalizedā by 4/1. This gives them leeway to make final decisions on the Banneker/Key awards, which involve interviews. In past years the Presidential and Deanās merit offers have always gone out on a Friday afternoon in late Feb.
Ah - you are correct! The website is now only mentioning the April 1st date. Wow. I wonder if that changed recently due to the FAFSA hold ups? Not sure at all but it definitely said 3/1 fairly recently and the two admissions reps on the Facebook page keep citing that 3/1 date too. Hmmm.
But thereās no connection between FAFSA and merit awards. You can get them without having filed FAFSA.
Agree. But Iām wondering if the financial aid office is just pushing back dates in general. I donāt know if any of the same staff are involved.
At most universities, merit awards originate from the admissions office or from a specific college whereas need based aid is determined by the financial aid office.
I assume itās the same at UMD but perhaps @STEMX can confirm.
Again, understand all this. But they definitely changed the wording for some reason. It now only mentions 3/1 in the B/K section whereas it used to say 3/1 for all merit, with everything āfinalizedā by 4/1. They may be buying themselves time this year for some reason. Whether itās related to the FAFSA delays or not can be debated, but what canāt be debated is that if they do delay into April, it will definitely increase anxiety related to the money side of decision making. I hope the merit still comes out before 3/1.
Anyone receive merit today?
Has anyone registered for the admitted student open house this Friday? We did but so far we have not received the email with additional details around parking, check-in etc.
Did you check spam folder?
In past years, additional emails arrived the day before, just my experience.
I have checked my spam folder and there is nothing there. I feel better though knowing that they arrived the day before in past years. Thanks a lot!
