That’s below the 25th percentile (they only report across all majors, CS is higher), so probably not. But no point worrying about it now. Good luck.
With basically a 5 GPA with 8 APs, and common app extracurriculars/awards all maxed out what would you say the chances of getting in would be? I submitted the SAT score since I didn’t want them to assume I did much worse.
My math score is also above 700 so I assumed that it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world submitting it.
The GPA and SAT math score will help. So hang in there.
I don’t believe AP scores are used in admissions.
Unfortunately, if you don’t get in, you won’t know why. UMD has a very holistic process - and so many factors are included. It’s no longer an easy in although still easier than other publics but CS is very difficult.
There will be a great place for you, UMD or otherwise.
Best of luck.
I have had several of my kids apply to Maryland over the years. One of them did not get in, and we did call to ask why. They kindly looked at her application and told us why she didn’t get in, and encouraged her to apply as a transfer student as it is much easier to get in that way. There are some incredibly kind and helpful people working in the office of admissions.
They are very nice to share that.
I don’t believe most schools would do that.
One can always call and ask. The worst case is they’d give a generic non answer answer.
Have they announced Admitted Student Day yet? Trying to figure out our spring break plans.
They’ll announce in Feb, after decisions are released.
Am I right in expecting a EA decision the last Friday in January? And a couple other questions
- Do they tend to defer a lot of oos kids (like Michigan, wisco etc)
- Does acceptance come with merit and or honors, if eligible
Thanks, all. We are in Oregon and know nothing about UMD processes and don’t know anyone else who applied
To my knowledge, they don’t defer too many applicants, definitely not like Michigan. Scholarships will be notified a few weeks after releasing decisions
Acceptance will include Honors college or other invitation to other living learning residential programs.
Merit scholarship will be announced by April 1, according to
UMD does not seem to defer many students, if at all. However, they do offer Spring Admission to a good number of students. These students have the option of enrolling in Freshman Connection. This lets them start in the Fall along with all the other admitted students, and participate in most student activities.
I have heard that UMD fills 90% of their freshman class with EA applicants, so I am thinking most will either get accepted or denied, but maybe that is not the right way to look at it. UMD is a reach for S24 regardless so I guess we will see what happens.
They don’t defer, you either are admitted, waitlisted or rejected.
There’s a post in this group for Prospective parents Redirecting... which tells you what you’ll find in the acceptance letter. You’ll also see announcements for Open Houses and Admitted Students Days there. Good luck to your student!
This is not true, the business school does automatically admit with minimum GPA of 3.6 and the other course completions. It used to be 3.8 but they lowered it in the last year.
CS did get much more difficult to transfer into.
There is no defer, the four statuses are:
admitted, fall
admitted, spring (can participate in freshman connection program in fall)
denied
waitlisted
Yes, we heard that too about CS. If ds doesn’t get in for CS, he won’t be going.
Most of UMD programs are LEP if you can’t get in everyone goes to Letters and Sciences. That’s what happened to my DS in 2020
