University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

Not most. Some.
But prior to this year, transfer from L&S to CS was automatic if the (low) gateway requirements were met. That is no longer the case, as mentioned in posts up thread.

The following link lists 16 Majors that are Limited Enrollment Programs at UMD

Hi
are you saying those majors listed are the hardest to get into ? First I’m seeing that for Psychology majors .

Hi! Question , new at this , we applied with Psychology major. Are you saying if he doesn’t get accepted into that they automatically may accept him to L&S?
High Stats here but didn’t submit SAT . Thanks !

UMD first admits to the college then makes a decision on the LEP. If admitted to the college and not admitted to the LEP then your student would be automatically placed in L&S.

The University of Maryland is saying that these are Limited Enrollment Programs. That means that they get more applicants for these Majors than they can accommodate.

Psychology has been a LEP for over 10 years.

UMD first evaluates students for Admission into the University and then separate admissions committees evaluate students for admission into LEPs (if appropriate). If they are not initially accepted into their LEP of choice, they are admitted into L&S. The student can then apply for an Internal Transfer. Each LEP has its own requirements for Internal Transfers. Both my D and her husband were able to do Internal Transfers to the LEPs they wanted

That’s correct until 2019 LEP was not there for some majors , also from 2020 I heard it got harder to get into LEP majors.

Where are you getting this information from?

The fact is each LEP is different with different gateway requirements and only a couple actually have increased the metrics for getting in beyond the gateway requirements. A blanket statement like the above just doesn’t make sense. Is there data I am missing that backs up that statement?

I see this in the academic catalog:

“Admission of new freshmen to some LEPs is highly selective. LEPs with highly selective admission for freshmen include biochemistry, biological sciences, business, chemistry, computer science, engineering, immersive media design and neuroscience. Freshman applicants interested in an LEP are encouraged to apply by the early action deadline, as space is limited for these programs. Freshmen who are directly admitted to an LEP will be subject to a performance review when they complete 45 college credits. The review varies from program to program, but always includes satisfactory performance in a set of appropriate courses. Students not passing the review will be required to choose another major. See the academic program description for specific details.

Freshmen not directly admitted to an LEP will be assigned to Letters and Sciences, where they will work with an advisor to meet the gateway requirements outlined for their particular program. Students are not guaranteed admission to an LEP at a later date. See the following section on LEP transfer admission for further details about this option.

TRANSFERS

Prospective transfer students and current UMD students wishing to change their major to an LEP must meet a set of gateway courses with minimum grades and obtain the required GPA in order to be considered for admission to the program (space limitations may apply). Additional information for each of the LEPs may be found at http://lep.umd.edu.

Transfer students who are not directly admitted to an LEP upon application to the university will be assigned to Letters and Sciences. Those with fewer than 60 credits will be assigned to Letters and Sciences and will be allowed the opportunity to meet the gateway requirements. Students with more than 60 credits will be admitted to an interim advising program in Letters and Sciences where they will be advised regarding their qualifications for the LEP and, in some cases, students will need to choose another major.

I think the @MarylandJOE was questioning the statement that it is 99% impossible to transfer into a LEP after 2 semester.

It is true that some students fail in their attempt to transfer into a LEP (but some do succeed) and it is also true that some students directly admitted to a LEP flunk out.

It also appears that some LEPs grow in size over a 4 year period when looking at the number of new Freshman entering a LEP and then looking at the number of students who graduate from that LEP 4 years later.

In any event the 99% seems a bit unrealistic without actual data

Yes, that’s the part I would like to see data on.

I agree.

For CS starting in fall 2024, I found the following- the number of internal transfer slots are being drastically reduced.

“ Due to severe enrollment pressures, the campus is changing the requirements to become a Computer Science major, starting with Fall 2024 matriculants. While we plan to increase the number of freshmen directly admitted to the Computer Science major by 150 slots (from 450 to 600 enrolled freshmen) , the number of slots for new external transfers and internal transfers coming from a different UMD major will be reduced to 100 per year (down from 1,000) . The new LEP Guidelines go into effect for students matriuclating to the University of Maryland, a Maryland Community College, or a USM school in Fall 2024. Current students who matriculated to the University of Maryland, a Maryland Community College, or a USM school prior to Fall 2024 will follow the prior LEP Guidelines.”

I wonder if you are mixing up something.

:

“ * Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. Please note that a grade of “W” is considered an attempt and must be repeated.

  • Students may apply once to an LEP.”

A student should not apply to an LEP unless the gateway requirements have been met. A student can only apply once.”

Sorry I may be wrong heard from friends in the past. I heard specifically around CS major but that was 2 years back.
I will remove my message.

Yes, the CS major is being drastically affected starting for Fall 24 admits. It is absolutely something that perspective students should be aware of and plan accordingly. The numbers you posted are a great indicator of what to expect. Thanks for sharing that information.

UMD’s Smith School of Business has had similar limitations for transfers for awhile now.

Most of UMD’s LEPs are still only limited by gateway course requirements which are the exact same courses that individuals admitted directly into the major must pass.

UMD has gotten more selective overall recently.

Last year (Fall 2023) UMD had 40,529 OOS applications with a 35% acceptance rate and a 14% yield

They also had 18,960 IS applications with a 37% acceptance rate and a 60% yield

Wow! More than twice as many OOS applicants than IS. Interesting.
Has UMD published these stats publicly?

This is interesting. I wonder about the inclusion of MD community college in the language - does that mean if you go to a CC for 2 years as a CS major you’re considered to be applying for College Park CS as a transfer and have to compete for those 100 LEP transfer spots? Or do you just get in? A lot of people think if they don’t get in as a freshman they’ll go 2 years CC and then transfer.

It’s on this website

You have to click on the 3 bars in the upper right hand corner to get to detailed data

Thank you! This is very helpful (UMD is a popular school in my area and I’ve been looking for this kind of data to help advise kids).
