1310 SAT is far from dreaded. Probably would qualify as top 15% for all test takers. If shes in the top 20% of her class and top 15% of all test takers I’d think shes a very qualified applicant for many many schools.
@Finalchildof3 @FlyingSouth
“1310 places you in the top 89th percentile nationally out of the 1.7 million students taking the SAT entrance exam this year.”
My OSS daughter’s SAT score was 1170 and she was admitted last year as a Spring admit but went in as a Freshman Connection for the fall. She just finished her first semester…all A’s. That just shows you that the SAT does not show what type of student you are!
Does anyone know the usual requirements to get into the honors college? and the requirements to get presidential scholarship?
@Schoolish my D is in the Honors college admitted last year. This was on the slide for admitted class stats of class of 2023 during Honors orientation.
HONORS FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS
950 Students
295 High Schools
22 States
82.2% From Maryland
41 Perfect SAT or ACT Score
Middle 50%
SAT: 1460-1540
ACT: 33-35
Average GPA: 4.6
My D has the Presidential Scholarship. I do not know that there are “requirements” but she had a 4.98 GPA, 1490 SAT, AP Scholar with Distinction; EC were ok but not spectacular. Engineering. She has to maintain a 3.2 to keep this and that is not easy. Just FYI about the Pres Scholarship!
My D was offered a presidential scholarship and College Park scholars two cycles ago. UW 4.0, 33 ACT, out of state, engineering, tons of leadership, music, etc…
@Schoolish - There are No stated requirements for the Honors College. It is a Holistic evaluation by the Honors College admissions officials.
However, Honors College students do tend to have high Stats.
Edit to add:
The President’s Scholarship provides four-year awards ranging from $2,000 to $12,500 per year. Both in-state and out-of-state applicants are eligible to receive the President’s Scholarship. Recipients are identified through evaluation of admission application materials including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay.
I am an international student going to apply for the regular decision to UMD. I am not aware of how the freshmen connection batch( Spring admit) is selected. I am applying for fall admit and wanted to know about the selection of freshmen connection.
This is good to know. Is your daughter a first generation college student?
There are about 1,000 Freshman Connection students in a year. These students have slightly lower scores than the schools average, but they are still strong candidates for UMD. They are actually spring admits but by choosing FC they can enroll for the fall. The only difference is that the classes are afternoon/evening classes for just the first semester. My daughter loved her schedule. She slept in and had her dorm room to herself in the morning. They also require a student to take a University101 course that helps the student transition to college. UMD says that the professors can tell which students went through FC because they are the students that sit up front, engage in the class and seek out help from the professors. It is a very successful program and I am so grateful that they offer it.
Does anyone know the typical stat of students who got the Banneker/Key Scholarship?
The Banneker/Key scholars distinguish themselves in their outstanding essays, which resonate with their ECs and LORs. Their quantitative stats (test scores, class ranking, GPA) are perhaps at the higher end of the range for those in Honors College.
@ruth59
So my query is do we have to apply for fall admission and then the university itself will offer you a chance to spring admit based on your application or do we have to apply for spring admit directly???
You apply for fall admission. UMD may offer you spring admission if you are not offered fall admission. No need for a separate application. If you are offered spring admission, you may decide to do freshman connection in the fall. My son’s only complaint was that having class later in the day sometimes interferes with clubs. Overall, he was happy with the program.
does anyone know if decisions will be released on January 15th or 24th? I heard the 15th from some other applicants, but I’m not sure if it’s true
@9ptempel1 From everything that I have seen on previous year’s EA decisions, they were released on the last Friday of January. However, this year there are 5 Friday’s in January which makes the last Friday, January 31st. In the prior years, it has been around the 24th, 25th or 25th, so I hope this year it is also around that time.
Hopefully someone else on this board can chime in with a better time frame.
My son’s was exactly the same. Submitted on 10/31, but shows completed application processed 11/7.
mine in coalition shows submitted , Is this right ?
Never mind I see that I shows “Your application complete date” under checklist.
Hi , just wanted to know what scholarships are available for OOS or international applicants at UMD ?
@NJdadEngineer - Here is a link that provides some info about UMD merit scholarships.
https://www.admissions.umd.edu/finance/freshman-merit-scholarships
UMD does not have any Stat-only based merit scholarships.
Also, UMD, and many other schools, consider the Standard Federal Student Loans to be a form of Financial Aid
