University of Maryland (UMD) College Park Early Action 2024

Sadly we are in the same position as many other OOS applicants here. For our D UMD was a target and she was happy to be accepted but with no merit award it means we will be declining the offer of a place. UMD with no merit award ended up being last on our Ds list whereas many other equally good or better colleges than UMD e.g. VT, Purdue etc… gave at least a small merit award to bring the OOS cost down to more manageable levels.
Well done and good luck to future UMD students who can afford the costs!

@SoofDad You can get this data from the “Common Data Set”. They show you the number awarded and the average award

@FRDad - Thanks, since my D graduated in 2018. I never thought of looking there. We never looked at it when she was applying in 2013.

Can anyone comment on UMD CS honors vs RPI CS in terms of academics and career placements?

@College8886 . My sister goes to RPI and is a sophomore and has a number of internships and potential jobs already lined up. It really is one of the best places to be for science and engineering-related stuff. With that said it is expensive, you need to consider how much you are willing to pay and if you like the school because it is very different from UMD.

Thanks curioustyler! My daughter did get $48k(for 4 years scholarship) from UMD and $30k/year from RPI. Rutgers would have a lower cost being instate from NJ. Based on my research, RPI seems to be a great option; we will try to visit both institutes. However with coronavirus issues, all colleges are canceling the student admit days.

@College8886 You might want to visit quickly before students are sent home. Even if you can’t do a formal tour, you can drive around. Troy, NY is not so hot, but RPI has a great reputation. (I grew up close by).

Did anyone’s decision letter disappear from coalition? Thanks

@Andromeda10 Yes. The decision letter is no longer available on Coalition.

@Andromeda10 Refreshed my browser and tried again and it is there.

I’m a little late to post my acceptance, but hopefully this helps someone else for next year!

I was accepted on Jan. 31 into the Merrill College of Journalism, and later the received Journalism Presidential Scholarship.

Hi! I applied to UMD in late Janurary. Does anyone know if the decision has come out and where to check? Thanks!

it hasn’t yet and you can check on your coalition portal on the UMD tab sometime this week (probably Friday if not today).

A bit late, but I was accepted with a 3.08 and 1350 SAT. Just have good essays, good ECs, and check your expectations.

@ChrisPBacon1234 you were accepted with a 3.08 GPA? Really? What is your hook?

@ChrisPBacon1234 major and residency?

When are RD decisions coming out?

@SoofDad Asking you as you seem to know all here is to know about UMD… My daughter was admitted to Honors College, and received a 4x$12k President’s Scholarship. Great deal cost-wise vs Boston University without any merit aid. However, she finds that with her heavy Major requirements and University Honors courses/seminars, it leaves her very little room to take various classes in subjects that interest her. Question… Can she drop out of Honors College (now) and still get the President’s Scholarship?

I replied in the other thread

I was admitted early action to Bioengineering and Global Communities living-learning program! However, I switched to Biological Sciences and submitted a Self-Nomination application for Scholars
