Here is some info on Scholars. It’s a good program
I don’t know the answer to your question about the appeal, but I’d encourage you to let the news sit for a week or two. If you still feel the same way then there are other paths in - like transferring after a year. I know it’s not what you want to hear right now. I promise things will work out.
In past years, some applicants didn’t receive their acceptances until much later. I don’t remember what they did to resolve it. I’d definitely call. I know this must be very frustrating!
DD OOS accepted for Neuroscience. 4.2 W, 3.9 UW, 11 APs, one community college course, strong ECs, leadership in multiple school clubs, hospital volunteering, public hs in CA.
DS got in for fall 26, Political Science. He’s really pleased as UMD was a top choice. He’s OOS 3.95/4.5 test optional. Lots of arts and performance related ECs with leadership. Top 10 public HS in MA. His essay was good - and his teachers who did his recs are really good writers. His letter mentioned the Carrilon Community- no clue what that is?
It’s a living learning community! Check it out: https://carillon.umd.edu
Editdd- it’s not yet updated for this yeR. You’ll need info from the admissions letter.
More info should be coming soon.
There will be 2 in person and 1 virtual Admitted Student Open Houses. We will have 2 or 3 CMNS virtual admitted student sessions and 5-6 in-person ones in addition to participating in the Admitted Student Open Houses (ASOH).
Do you know when those are. Student doesn’t know if she wants to go there and is weighing her options now that all her choices are completed.
No, College Park Scholars is a living/learning community. Not every student was invited to ANY living/learning community, which also includes the Honors College, Carillon, BioFIRE, etc. Only fall admits were considered for these special academic programs.
They will only be announced when registration opens.
My son was also between these two schools. My advice would be to go to Admitted Students day for both and really spend time at the schools - eat at the dining halls, talk to the students, talk to professors, find out about the dorms and living conditions, housing situation for second year, etc. I also joined the parents FB page to get a vibe of the school to see what parents were talking about, what were concerns, how situations are handled by the schools and parents, etc. Going in - my son thought he wanted VT. After our visits- UMD was the clear winner for SO many reasons. He is a second year and there’s so much to love about UMD. Hopefully, visiting the schools will also give you a clearer answer.
Does UMD give merit money? If so, when do we find out?
Yes, it will come out later in February
Can you elaborate a bit on why he chose UMD? VA Tech is in state for us and my older DD attends so it is a school with which I am very familiar. We heard very good things about UMD engineering and it’s fairly close, which is why she applied. UMD was a decent reach so I really did not do a ton of research on the school expecting a potential rejection. We will definitely try to attend admitted students day, though it sounds a bit like the Hunger Games to sign up. Lol
The UMD website has a ton of info on it. That would be a good place to start. If your student has any AP test scores you can see what kind of credit they may get for UMD courses.
My son is also an engineering student. We signed up for a separate engineering tour available at UMD (not part of the admitted student day) and drove down from PA for the day to get a closer look. So this may be another option to learn more if this is still available. We were really impressed with hands on from the very beginning. First year UMD engineering students take a class where they’re assigned on a team of mixed engineering disciplines to design and build a “car” to complete their assigned task- each team was different. Very cooperative environment and the professors truly want to see you succeed. My second year son is also very involved in the Formula IC club that designs, builds, etc. and is doing research for one of his professors (being published this summer) which may lead to a second research opportunity.
Yes, sign up for admitted student days as soon as the link becomes available- for both schools. It’ll become clear to you which one feels right for your student (it’s definitely a personal decision)!
I’m happy to answer any other questions!
Psych is on the Limited Enrollment list. Lots of great schools where you can study psych and would love you, even throw money at you. Good luck.
Psyc is NOT limited enrollment for incoming freshmen, only for current UMD students who want to switch into it.
Not how it reads to me but nonetheless LEP or otherwise OP did not get in so needs to find another home. And if they don’t have one identified, lots of great schools are still taking apps, and many will be similar or even lower in cost.
