I wonder if the yield (# who choose to attend/# accepted) for OOS is so low because students might apply hoping to get merit similar to other big ten publics but then donât get it from UMD.
Thatâs why my son declined to go from OOS several years ago, even though UMD was his top choice and he got into honors. They wouldnât budge on only offering $2500/yr merit. Then ASU Honors offered full tuition. It was tough to swallow but ultimately the right decision. A great education and no debt.
I get it. We are instate for UMD or it would not be on our list. We targeted OOS schools that give $10k or more to get the price close to instate at UMD.
What OOS merit aid is there, and how does it compare to competitors?
ETA: my older boys did get offered some merit aid but ultimately went closer to home. But this was years ago and things may have changed. DS25 I think has UMD as his #1 choice.
Interesting. My son got into ASU for biz analytics. Ranked 10th in country. Great biz school. Concern is coming back east and trying to get an internship or job. What is your son studying. FYI, my son didnât get into Barrett
my daughter is marketing and professional sales major at Barrett and WP Carrey but sheâs doing a certificate in business analytics. Only a sophomore so canât comment on jobs yet but very happy there.
Like other highly sought after public schools (UIUC, Purdue, GT), UMD gives very little merit aid. They donât need to, since they get plenty of highly qualified applicants and donât need to provide discounts via merit awards.
But they do provide some merit aid to top applicants, and a full ride (Banneker-Key) award to the very tippy top. These are all awarded holistically, and not just based on stats.
Comparable with its peers like the schools listed. But of course, not comparable to schools that are a couple of notches down in terms of reputation and popularity.
I would add South Carolina to that list. They give great aid. As of now (final merit comes out in March), itâs 25% cheaper for my son to go there than his in-state school (UMass).
Office of Undergraduate Admissions | Freshman Merit Scholarships, only about 20% of admitted freshmen are awarded merit aid, and admissions over-awards knowing not all who receive will attend, meaning that when one of them declines UMD admission, that award does not go to someone else. They also do not âbarterâ or change awards to meet other schoolâs offers.
When my daughter applied to UofSC in 2021, they gave her instate tuition rate + $4k. It was about the same or a little less as UMD instate (we are in Maryland). Howver, UMD gave her 5K/year and that made our decision much easier.
Son who graduated from Barrett in Political Science now works in NYC at a media analytics start-up and doing great. The ASU Barrett degree wasnât an impediment to his East Coast job search, though he worried it would be at the time.
