Can someone explain Letters and Science? Is it difficult to transfer into engineering? My son didn’t get Engineering but got Letters and Science.
From what I’ve read, they need to take Gateway classes and get at least a 3.0 GPA in all classes.
Also:
C- in chem
B- in Calc II
B- in Physics
They then meet with their advisor and are accepted.
My oldest knows lots of kids who started in FC, trust me no one knows or cares! They are students just like everyone else!
ok!
Completion of MATH141 [Calculus II] with a minimum grade of B-
Completion of PHYS161 [General Physics: Mechanics and Particle Dynamics] with a minimum grade of B-
Completion of CHEM135 [General Chemistry for Engineers] with a minimum grade of C-
- The following courses are approved substitutes for CHEM135: CHEM271 or CHEM134 with a minimum grade of C‐ (Students who take CHEM134 must also have completed CHEM131 with a minimum grade of C‐).

Phily based D25 admitted to umd and uw madison for cs. Costs the same as both oos. 3 hours drive for umd and 3 hours flight for madison. Confused on what to choose … any recommendations?
Has your D visited both? Looked at CS classes/requirements at both?
Perhaps start your own thread? You’ll receive inputs from the broader community.
Can your parents afford both schools?
Have you visited both schools?
Why did you apply to UMD?
Why did you apply to UW Madison?
If you have not visited, you really should.
Your answers should guide your decision.
Consider where you would like to live after school for your first job. If the plan is to go back Philly, then UMD might be a better choice all else being equal.

Please start a new thread for questions pertaining to your specific situation. This is a general thread for UMD EA.
Is Freshman Connections in the fall only gen ed courses? Any idea how a student with most gen eds completed through dual enrollment and direct CC credits would be treated? Would those credits not transfer so that the student would complete them again through FC? D25 will have her associate’s this May when graduating HS and other state schools she’s accepted at (Pitt, PSU, Delaware) seem generous in what they will accept and apply in terms of DE credits. How is UMD generally on transfer credits?
You can see the cs major requirements and optional tracks here: https://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/degree-requirements-cs-major
Accepted with honors college invitation, OOS CoE, 4.0 UW, 1560 SAT. Took most of the AP classes offered at their school (~ 7), 4 DE math classes beyond Calc B/C, 3-sport varsity athlete and captain of 2, several engineering & tech-related ECs and an internship.
I think you need to get some answers from the Freshman Connection office. Here are 2 ways to make contact
or
What if I have an Associate’s Degree or many AP, IB or other transfer credits?
Students who plan on transferring significant credits must contact an advisor at fc@umd.edu prior to enrolling in Freshmen Connection.
Thank you!
Still have not received a decision, any chance that it can come today?
Still waiting too. This is my 3rd time thru the college process, and this has never happened with any other school. I just don’t see what is missing…the portal says complete app as of 10/30/24.
Anyone got the result today? We are still waiting too. AS UMD says result to be released by 2/1 will all students who haven’t got the result get it today?
same here. cannot find a problem.
