Differential tuition is for 4 semesters only. A lot of Eng/CS majors have junior standing sophomore year (AP/Dual Enrollment credits), so student would theoreically pay extra for soph and junior year but not senior.

Sure. It starts at 60 credits (including AP and dual enrollment credits). Most people will graduate within 4 semesters after 60 credits. But you are right, you will not pay past 4 semesters.
One way to avoid is to use summer where it is not charged.

Roughly 125 students have junior standing, I don’t know if that is a lot.

A lot of those 60 credits will not apply to gen ed or major requirements. My son is currently planning on graduating 1 semester early with double major and study abroad, so 1 semester after we finish paying differential tution. I have no issue with him graduating in 3 1/2 or 4 yrs. His older siblings at different schools took 8 semester to graduate after starting with similiar credits allowing for double majors, study abroad and in the case of the engineering major lighter course loads per semester and double major.

Son’s friends are mostly CS/Math double or engineering majors so that color his experience. I was mainly referring to students who entered with sophomore class standing so would have junior class standing their second year (16.1% fall 2023).

Does it work that way (enter with “sophomore” or “junior” standing), or is it more like if you finish things early, you’re done? We had one of each happen with DS’s brothers so I know it depends on the place.

I think it must be. My guess is it’s a sophisticated algorithm, because if it were just straight-up percentages, we wouldn’t see the “I didn’t get Honors or Scholars but I got X” vs “I got Honors but got nothing” kinds of posts.

In our case, DS is over the moon and UMD shot up to the current leader in his choices. He didn’t get the “maximum” offer but with 12K/year that puts it within reach for our family and within enough range financially of our own state school (U MA) that I think it’s reasonable.

Credits matter for two things, some majors, like business, require a certain number of credits to take certain classes. Also it shapes when you register. You need 120 to graduate, but you also need all your major requirements.

Right, but for example my oldest’s school required him to do forms/etc. to skip sophomore year, such that he entered his second year as a junior explicitly. My second’s school just informed him he had enough credits so he was able to light-load his eighth semester (or he could have overloaded his seventh semester and graduated a semester early, without any planning prior to that year).

Has anyone received merit for a Music major yet?

In terms of registering for classes, you enter with the higher standard. In terms of housing, it goes by the year the student started classes at UMD.

One last thing to keep in mind, a lot of gen eds classes give preference to students with under 60 credits, so student should keep that in mind when registering for classes 1st 2 semesters. Student will no problem fufilling gen ed requirements, but less option for most popular classes. Also, some courses fufill 2 or 3 gen-ed requirements at once so are usually very popular.

OOS 48,000k. 12,000k per year.
ECE Major.
Did NOT get into honors.
Taking a gap year so might reapply (with new ecs from this year) to try and get honors

My daughter was also admitted to College Park Scholars and received the same amount of merit. She’s committing elsewhere.

You’ll need to see Four Year Plan for your major.

A few majors limit how many times a prerequisite may be taken.

UMD will note how many credits a student starts with. An incoming student with 18 credits will register for classes before one with zero.

But, to have junior standing with a declared major- that determination is by the College or School, bc each major has prerequisites.

Admitted Students events may have opportunities to get personal review/ or at least out you in touch with academic advisor.

Anyone else here completely shut out of the Admitted Student events including the Next Stop Maryland tours. I tried to register for our preferred date a few weeks ago and it was completely full. Now there is nothing available. I am surprised at this as I have not had the same experience trying to sign up for Admitted Student events at other Big 10 schools my son is considering. I asked about a wait list and was told to just keep checking the website (which is also the worst I have seen compared to several others in terms of identifying availability). At this point, I think we are going to just show up for the Next Stop Maryland tour we want and hope they will have pity on us.

Any idea when specific Scholars/Honors programs will be announced?

Someone on FB said last year it was Feb 29?
