Can students apply for honors college if not accepted first year? Is it worth it to apply?
Any student can do research and be part of departmental honors (which is not a program for freshmen) if they meet the requirements: https://honors.umd.edu/academics/departmental-honors/
Very rare a student would get in this way. https://honors.umd.edu/prospective-students/admissions-process/current-and-transfer/
Thank you!!!
Anyone went to the admitted students day today? Any experience feedback?
Hey, I went! I personally LOVED it, but definitely get there as early as possible. We arrived at 7:30, and traffic was already backed up in three directions into one garage and thereās some construction. My mom and I had to run to make the info session while my dad finally managed to park and after the walk, reached the info session at 9 AM (they changed the parking location last minute due to lack of space).
Food options in the Stamps Student Union are solid (we had Panda Express lol), with plenty of franchises. I didnāt try the dining hall food, but thatās also an option. The Student Union is really fun (thereās a bowling alley in the basement?!).
Be careful with overbooking your schedule like I did. Getting around is a challengeāit took us time to walk between places, and event management was a bit confusing. My morning was packed: an 8-11 AM major/school-specific program with a long walk from Stamps to the building, followed by a 20-minute walk back for the general tour (which meant another 75 minutes of walking), an hour lunch, and then a 20-minute sprint to Cambridge Commons (we had to run because of a scheduling errorāit wasnāt in Stamps like the app said ), then another 20-minute walk back.
ALSO, if you want a general tour, make sure you have the app downloaded and ready. Sign-ups opened at 8 AM and filled up by 8:01 (not kidding) for the 1st tour at 11 AM. Donāt stress about it though, because later times were still open.
Even though I walked 25k steps, I really loved the school and the energy. 1000% recommend and everything was definitely worth it!! Everyone was really kind and helpful, super willing to take you the right place. Just make sure to set aside time for a break!
Just a note that UMD will be closed for spring break (no employees on campus) from the 17-19 of March. Students have all of next week off.
Hopefully the biggest construction project (the Purple line, an extension of our METRO system) will be over soon. Itās been one folly after another (through absolutely NO fault of the university). But I got to admit this made me laugh. I remember when my now UMD senior went there I said āmaybe the purple line will be open by the time you leaveā. hahahahhahaha. Now I say to my youngest who is a potential incoming freshman āif that thing opens before you leave it will be a miracleā.
I know the University has put a lot of pressure on them to wrap up the campus construction sooner than the line is due to open and a big chunk of it was finished last year (in front of the student union).
Additional parking tip-- I used Spot Hero and parked in the surface lot just behind the Hotel for our Next Stop Maryland tour. It cost $8 for all day and was easy in and out. We didnāt have a reservation for the tour so I didnāt want to stress about parking in the hotel and then if we didnāt get into the tour, our parking might not have been validated.
Did they let you jump on the tour? I have not been able to get into any tour
We went and had a great day. It has definitely moved up as one of my daughterās top choices. We werenāt able to get a spot on a tour, but it actually turned out for the best. We walked around campus ourselves and prioritized the things we wanted to see. We ate at the dining hall (the āYā) around 11āvery impressed with the food options. Definitely the best dining hall weāve visited. When we walked out of the dining hall shortly before noon, the line of people to get in (mostly students and parents who had just finished their tour) was incredibly long. So it worked out ok for us.
Two years ago, my son and I went to admitted student day but got shut out of a campus tour session. While one group was leaving the auditorium at Stamp we just jumped in with them.
Yes. We got in off the wait list. Show up 30 minutes early and when they sign in all who registered they will put you on the wait list. This school makes cancelling a reservation so difficultā people will definitely not show up.
UMD sent out email and updated portal for Banneker/Key scholarship amount decisions yesterday.
My D25 just submitted her decision to attend UMD over the weekend!
As an in-state student, with the honors program and scholarship she was offered, UMD was the best choice among the five schools she applied to. Her sister went through a similar decision-making process four years ago, ultimately choosing UMD as well, and recently graduated this past December. She had a fantastic experience, and now we have another proud Terp alum in the family!
For parents of incoming Terps, thereās a Facebook page where UMD parents actively help answer questions and address concerns for new families. Itās a great resource to stay informed and connect with others.
Good luck to all the new Terps and their families!
Congratulations! Can you share the Facebook page? Thank you
The FB link was already posted by @mzjcricket, but here is the link: University of Maryland (UMD) Class of 2029 - Parents | Facebook
My son wants to withdraw his application but we cannot find the accept/withdraw button in the portal. Any thoughts?
Edit: OK, just found it buried in another link of admitted student checklist
