Yes, that’s what I’m trying to understand. She was invited to the Honors College, so maybe that helps with housing as I understand they reside together, but can imagine they may over-enroll as well. Thanks for the feedback.
Anyone received pre-admitted to Isenberg School of Management specialized master’s degree programs email? My twins just received the emails. Seems like a free option to me, any downside?
My son got that email, too. I’d love to hear more about it if other people have experience with the program.
You don’t have to worry about housing with the Honors College. Honors College dorms are relatively new buildings in a great central location, right next to the gym building. It is hard to find better housing in any other school including private ones.
who did you reach out for the specific department tour?
But do they also have crowding situations with the Honors College, or are you saying in addition to being centrally located and really nice, there’s no risk of not having a space if you were admitted.
I never heard of crowding situations in the Honors College dorms.
I just called the regular visit department and they gave number to her college. I talked to her department. They gave me their email and asked me to email so they arrange some one for the actual department tour.
If you look on their department website, they listed a contact name for tours and more info. I initially emailed the contact for dept/major specific tours but since none of the tours were on the days that we were actually going to be in town, I told her we couldn’t make it. I did tell her in a second email what day we would be there, and that’s when she offered up at an ambassador tour from a student.
D24 was admitted in December to umass Amherst yet we never received an admissions packet in the mail or any type of letter. Is this typical or are other admits receiving mail?
Nothing in the physical mail for my son. Everything is electronic.
We attended Destination Days yesterday for S24 (CS). The department presentation was informative, although a bit too heavy on DEI. The department is big, well-funded, and offers lots of electives and research opportunities. A new extension is being built, which is expected to completed in late 2025.
The other sessions were OK. Food at Franklin Commons was good - no surprise, given UMass’s reputation for excellent dining. Choices included vegan, gluten-free, Mediterranean, Italian, East Asian and South Asian.
We are instate and had visited many times before, so nothing was a surprise.
S24 likes UMass a lot, but has some other offers with sizable merit and special opportunities, so not ready to commit.
My husband and daughter went yesterday as well to Engineering and thought the academic session was quite good. However, they had a similar impression with the Honors College which was largely focused on D&I. This is important of course, but they wanted to learn the benefits of honors, which was lacking.
We were there too, for engineering & honors. (You might have seen us come into the honors presentation 1/2 hour late because we had been trying to find gluten free food for my son. )
I thought the departmental presentation was great & there was a student panel that was especially informative, but we didn’t find any of the other sessions that helpful. We hadn’t ever visited, though, so it was important for my son to just see the campus and what he thought about it.
ETA: I was looking at some info on RAPs today and noticed they said (at least the engineering one) to apply ASAP, even before you commit to the college if you are interested in participating in the RAP. They said applying for the RAP doesn’t commit you, and it ensures you’ll get in if you do decide to attend.
My husband and daughter left around that time as they weren’t getting much out of it. I think she will end up elsewhere. She loved the dining hall and the town Saturday night for dinner but the campus and the presentations left her a bit cold…literally and figuratively
Did you have luck finding gluten free food anywhere? D has celiac.
Diversity and Inclusion = Good. Equity should be replaced with Equality. Huge difference.
Yes, but I think it would have been easier on a day when the dining commons wasn’t trying to serve 4x as many people as normal.
They had an allergen line that was very strict with protocols, but the food was all too adventurous for my son. I ate it and liked it! My son really just wanted a plain burger and fries, or something like that.
I eventually tracked down a manager who got the dining commons chef to come out and talk to us. He made my son a safe burger and fries to order! The manager said when you are a student, there is an app where you can order allergen free food to your specifications and they will premade it for you to pick up at the time you want it.
So that sounds pretty good, but I could not verify how it actually works. The staff were really helpful and concerned though, and the burger and fries he eventually got were great. It just took much longer than we had time for at the event.
ETA: also they directed us to the UMass Dining App, where you put in your food restrictions or preferences and it tells you all the food being served that day that meets them. While it is nice, seeing how the food on the regular (non-allergy) stations is served I would be really concerned about cross contamination. If he ends us at UMass he will probably stick to the ordering ahead assuming that really works.
Applied EA, Art, waitlisted and found out tonight accepted! Nice suprise. Now we need to make the trip up to check it out. We had it narrowed down to 4, now it’s 5!
Congrats! My son got accepted to College of Information and Computer Science OOS and same scholarship, no honors. I’ve heard it’s very hard to get into honors college as an applicant from out of state.
