lol my brother is applying to schools, so its funny reading these threads again. i go here for CS, and im in the honors program*, if anyone has any questions
In state
Accepted to Isenberg
UW: 3.9
W: 4.4
High rigor, APs & honors
Strong leadership and awards
Lots of community service, arts ECs
Test optional
No honors program. No merit
Separately received Adams Scholarship, to be applied to UMass tuition - for strong MCAS state test scores.
Believe students can apply to honors program in subsequent years.
D24 accepted, oos, $12k/yr merit, 3.9, private prep school, animal science, tons of volunteer hrs at Humane Society and vet/animal related ECs.
Sounds like my daughter, oddly similar profiles especially being able to work while excelling in school.
Accepted OOS into CSBS.
GPA 4.1 weighted.
SAT 1370
Several honors classes, 2 AP, and 5 dual enrollment.
Extensive volunteer hours and leadership.
Congrats to all who got in, especially those for whom this is a first choice.
For those who didnāt get results, please donāt be down on yourself. The college process can really hack away at your confidence. FWIW, my older son had STELLAR stats (sky-high SAT and GPA, heaviest possible course rigor, multiple awards, excellent writing skills and story, etc). He, along with several other hyper-qualified friends, were waitlisted for Isenburg and comp sci. He is now where he is meant to be and doing great.
Good luck to all!
I am surprised by this this AND nobody should be considering Umass CS a safety (not saying you were).
CS is SOOO much harder than the other programs (except nursing)ā¦1490 is (shockingly) below the average for entering class of 2027 (which likely means admitted average is even higher!)
Also, did you figure out their weighted GPA on UMass scale? Average for CS is 4.44 (once again last yearās class).
Son accepted into computer science, no honors college, and no mention of scholarships (though we are in state and already notified about Adams scholarship, so thereās that)
1420 SAT
Top 10% of class
4.71 GPA
Not a safety but a target. He is in state, takes the hardest classes offered at his school, which is how he is supposed to be measured, takes AP Calc outside of school, got an A in a college stats class, national commended scholar. He got a 780 on the math portion of the SAT and was a math SAT tutor. I checked the common data set and the 75% SAT was lower than a 1490.
Waitlisted. Will move on! Good luck to all!!!
I think the common data set might be older? According to the UMass data for students entering this fall, SAT scores for CS students were 25th percentile 1420, 75th percentile 1520, and āaverageā 1469.
I am surprised your child was waitlisted. I agree with you that it is odd. On the other hand, only 26% of students who applied to CS were admitted last year.
I know people often roll their eyes at the āyield protectionā theory, but I do wonder if UMass is doing a bit of yield protection. In past years it has often seemed like that.
exactly, that makes it a reach for pretty much everyone reallyā¦unless you are WAY above 75th on everythingā¦
UMass Amherst, unlike many state flagships, does consider demonstrated interest. Itās not their top criteria, of course. Itās very important to demonstrate interest by registering & taking an official tour of campus and the intended school of major.
And expressing interest via an official tour may also help those who are waitlisted. Unsure if letters of continued interest from waitlisted students are considered. Iād have your student contact admissions and ask about both of these if theyāre waitlisted and UMass remains a top choice.
Yes, for the whole university that is surely true. The stats for CS majors are WILDLY Different (check link I posted, the average is edit 1469 (I had read it 1496ā¦25th is 1420 and this is entering data, not accepted which is even higher). The average GPAs between programs are also VERY different. Note this is true at most schools that admit my major and program. Not all schools are like Umass and post this though. UWashington is the probably the most extreme example. OOS CS there is like 3%. OOS other things may be 50%+ acceptance.
I have a kid whose stats would make CS a far far far reach and a Behavioral Science program a solid target (possibly a safety).
I did not realize that UMass Amherst had their new CDS out!
It looks like they took almost 2000 students off the waitlist last year, although my guess would be that not so many of them were CS and Isenberg.
Also, the CDS says that demonstrated interest is not considered. I guess they could be lying on the CDS? But my son never got around to touring or doing any online events with them, and not only did he get in but he also got honors. So I think it may be accurate that they donāt consider demonstrated interest.
Do they have that published somewhere? In this climate, it would be surprising ⦠issue with equity. Students from lower socioeconomic status would struggle to take off of work or afford air fare for an in person visit. I would expect more from a flagship school in a blue state.
At our high schoolās admissions panel, a senior UMass admissions rep told our high school parents that they do consider demonstrated interest - be sure to visit. Thatās what led us to do official tours there.
I definitely saw it in their last CDS report. So itās interesting to hear itās not in the most recent report.
OOS
Accepted to Isenberg
UW: 2.9
W: 3.21
Red Cross Board member.
Internship at Space X, and NASA
Strong leadership and awards
2 APs
Varsity Sports
SAT: 1290
$16k Chancellors, honors college
test scores.
Believe students can apply to honors program in subsequent years.
How many actually submitted scores?
demonstrated interest can include virtual tours/info sessions or meeting a visiting admission rep, signing up for mailing lists, clicking emails - it isnāt just about a campus visit.
For sure, there are many ways to demonstrate interest - but the longtime UMass rep told our public high school senior parents to visit and she emphasized demonstrated interest. This is a good change.
If you do visit, the food is award-winning and it was terrific. Fresh veg from local farms, tons of options.
