Actually, their CDS would state otherwise.
The why U Mass essay also helps show interest.
Waitlisted UMass (In State) accepted Rutgers (OOS) Engineering. I can’t figure this out lol. Rutgers should be much harder to get into
DD got into Computer Engineering, Honors College, Chancellor’s (16K/year)
We are pleasantly surprised with all these.
Thank you, UMass, my alma mater
Congratulations to all who got in!
S24 waitlisted, CS, OOS, 1510SAT 4.0UW/4.3W.
Will decline waitlist as he got other options.
The shift to not considering demonstrated interest is a very recent change
You got me curious, so I checked CDS reports for previous years. You’re 100% correct. The 2022-2023 year CDS showed demonstrated interest as considered. The 2020-2021 CDS lists it as important.
In state, 1440 SAT, 3.7 wtd, very good EC’s. Waitlisted at Isenberg for Finance. Slightly surprised. Moving on
We are in the same boat. In at Purdue, Pitt, RBS, Rutgers Engineering, arts and sciences and Environmental and Biological sciences plus about 8 other schools, some with full tuition scholarships. My theory is that b/c every kid in the high school applied to U Mass Amherst (even if they are aiming for Ivies, etc.) U Mass takes the top (whether that is the very top grades, or SAT scores, or athletics etc no idea), and because it is in state tuition, and a solid school they have no problem filling their class. Whereas when kids apply to Rutgers or Purdue there is a much smaller pool from the high schools to compare against which lets them shine.
@MRRB_SE thank you for posting this. It’s interesting that they stepped down the importance of demonstrated interest over the past couple years to “not considered.”
While this new change and visiting the campus may no longer be a key admissions criteria, I will say it was worth it.
Highly informative for our student and us to walk the campus and tour Isenberg. It provided a basis for viewing other business schools. The info and perceptions were very relevant to the Why UMass essay.
We’re in state, but not close to Amherst and hadn’t visited Western MA for a while. It is so beautiful there during their Fall Visit Days. And packed with visitors.
accepted to college of education with honors and a 2k/yr dean’s scholarship! in state, 3.98 UW, 1580 SAT
I fully agree (assuming a student can manage it financially and logistically). That said, we visited over the summer when it was very quiet and fairly empty. I think it will be important to see the campus while school is in session to get a better feel of the vibe. He is planning to go to admitted student days for at least one, probably two other schools (he’s still hoping for merit at one of them). I believe he’ll want to attend one at UMass, as well, and I agree that will give him a much better sense of what it’s like when the campus is more vibrant.
To veer off course for a bit, does anyone know how housing works? Assuming a student is not in honors, is it first-come, first serve?
OOS, accepted SBS, GPA 3.8 at well known tough public, SAT 1460, 14k Chancellors, no honors. Fwiw, showed a lot of demonstrated interest - tour, email and an essay that showed it was a top choice.
I’m wondering, too.
May I ask, what option is he choosing?
