University of Miami Class of 2023

Anyone heard anything from Frost re: specific program acceptances? Karen Kerr said they were going out today, but still nothing.

Univ of miami has exhausted all their funds. A friend of mine got accepted in EA and he was told that there are no funds left

@JOhn245 That is not true. People have been posting even in the last couple of days that they or their child received merit. Please don’t spread false rumors.

@joeycorp My S was admitted to Frost and the major was listed on the letter. Also, he got the UM acceptance package in the mail today and that also stated his major.

@Propinquity4444 Thanks. So was hers: it says Music and she’s doing B.A. Music, but there’s nothing about CAM. She emailed Karen Kerr to say that info was going out today. So I guess that means snail mail!

I’m talking about financial aid. Not scholarships.

That’s not true, Miami offered a lot of financial aid to applicants who will not attend. There is plenty of aid still available.

Has anyone else not gotten a decision yet? Does this mean I probably got rejected?

@TheSportsGuy I haven’t heard back yet but don’t assume the worst. prepare for the worse but hope for the best!

i havent heard back, called and said remaining decisions will begin to be sent out tomorrow and that youll know by friday

do you think the remaining decisions are all rejections?

no they said they arent

I finally got my decision. Accepted!!! Marine Bio/Bio double major. Could not be happier to be a Cane!! The wait was definitely worth it

Hello so I’ve commented a couple times ab how I was deferred and then waitlisted and how this was my dream school since forever. I still really want to go but most likely won’t make it off the waitlist so I’m not sure if withdrawing and then applying for second semester be the best option or going through with the waitlist and then waiting a year if not admitted? If you get in from the waitlist you don’t get merit so idk if it’s worth the wait? Sorry for this, it’s been a thread of constant deferrals and waitlists for me:(

^Why withdraw now? Can you wait until May when students accept or decline? UM may need to access the waitlist to meet enrollment. I will be deciding between 2 or 3 schools by weekend and should know within 1-2 weeks so I can decline those that I will not attend. The allows schools after 5/1 deadline to pick up students if yield was not enough.

UMiami’s a great place for STEM/pre-med guys! Congrats on getting in. If you’re pre-med there is probably no better place. Make sure you do not take Michael Gaines for Biology 150, and take St Hilaire for Chem I. Here, if you put in the work exams are not difficult and quite fair if you pick your professors accordingly and strategize your semesters so that you don’t have multiple difficult exams in the same week. As for other departments I’d be a bit wary
as a Foote Fellow and triple major I will say that whilst my experience in STEM has been super positive, I cannot say the same about other fields–namely International Relations and related social science fields. Language options are quite minimal compared to other schools like Emory and Vanderbilt. Most of our money goes to the Medical School and STEM and endowment per student is not super high so these are just things to bare in mind. That said, compared to schools like GWU, Boston University, Tulane etc I do think UMiami is probably the better pick as it is still fairly well rounded (just not outstanding in fields outside of STEM). Student body is relatively small believe it or not–or at least feels that way.

I do hope for the sake of the University that people who enroll here are a little more focused on “learning for the sake of learning” as the environment here is quite pre-professional and in my view, fails to stick to a traditional liberal arts experience.

Let me know if you guys have any questions about UM, I know a decent amount. Just for background I’m a Foote Fellow here that’s majoring in Biology/International Relations/Economics + Pre-Med in the College of Arts and Sciences

@gapyearapplicant My D was accepted to Frost but wants to minor in Italian and learn additional languages. Can you be more specific about perceived weaknesses in foreign language? She is looking for a liberal arts experience–she is doing the BA Music–and that’s a question. I do know that their study abroad options are a little limited, in terms of what they offer and which other programs they’ll accept credit for (and allow FA to transfer to). What about English, Psych and Creative Writing?

@joeycorp Italian is offered at UM and from what I understand the experience people have had is positive. My point about languages being limited is more in the sense that the actual amount of languages offered here is less than other comparable schools–BU could be a good example. Like over here at UM you can’t take Hindi-Urdu for example which I feel is a mistake given India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are rising economies with over 1.3 billion people total. If your daughter is studying Music at Frost, from what I gather that is amongst the best Music schools around so she shouldn’t have any deficiency there. Study abroad here is def deficient compared to top schools but the offerings are still okay; for biology, there is UGalapagos which is pretty cool. That said study abroad is super focussed on Latin America/Europe which may appeal to some (a lot of UM’s student body is Latin American so) but it’s pretty limited in India and Asia in general so that’s something to keep in mind if Asia interests your daughter. I know in INS people did some pretty cool things like Engineers without Borders in Peru a few years back to help poverty-stricken places with irrigation.

To be quite honest, in terms of English and Psychology, UM is actually good in these areas. If you refer to the course catalog, there is a fairly wide range of courses that can be selected from the English department and generally speaking my experience with professors has been positive.

Psychology has an abundance of research opps and is fairly well linked with the Medical School; in fact, I know many Psych majors who have been offered research at Miller. I myself was quite close to conducting for a form of psychobiology research at Miller this year but opted out of it ultimately.

Sorry I can’t offer more info on these majors, I’m a lot lot more familiar with STEM/IR/Econ
