University of Miami Class of 2023

Thank you @gapyearapplicant ! This all sounds really positive. We’re going down next weekend to visit and barring anything unforeseen, I think she’ll probably be a 'Cane!

anyone yet to receive admission decision?

What can you share about Computer Science at UM? I was admitted to Frost(so excited about this) but CS is going to pay my bills. I can’t seem to find much about this major at UM. Thanks

Hi! I have a question about the Benaquisto scholarship. I am a florida resident and national merit finalist. Am i guaranteed the scholarship if I name UM as my first choice institution? And how much would this scholarship amount to (even an estimate would be helpful, thanks). Lastly, I qualify for bright futures, and I know this will affect the Benaquisto award amount. So with all that, who can help me estimate how much UM is going to cost. Haha thanks

How is math program at UM?

Can you apply for any of the honor programs after freshman year? Also, is there any scholarship that can be added to you scholarship after freshman year through the university?

My daughter is trying to decide between Miami and Georgia. She is planning to major in Biology on the Pre-med track and minor or double major in French. She is a Foote Fellow and she likes that opportunity, but we don’t really know what that means - the general requirements are waived?? She has grown up with an SEC school (University of Kentucky) practically in her backyard and is feeling more comfy about Georgia - she knows exactly what to expect here- but likes the size, feel, city of Miami. Her concerns are the lack of walkable restaurants/shops, second semester rush. Anyone have any insight into the pre-med program, the Foote Fellow experience or the Greek scene that might help her? Thanks!

@flanmom My daughter is a Foote Fellow/biology major. Your daughter won’t be required to fulfill the cognates, but will still have to complete a specific number of writing courses and courses required by the major. Cognates are confusing. They are clustered around a topic and fulfill the elective requirements https://cognates.miami.edu/ She will be free to pursue a double major or multiple minors like psychology, public health, chemistry (which she will most likely have anyhow) which is great for a premed student.

To be honest, being a Foote Fellow in the College of A&S has been underwhelming for my D compared to the experience of those in the Business School, for example. However, she has gotten some perks like earlier registration times, preferential move-in times, exemption from the cognates, an additional advisor, etc.

Second semester rush is actually a GOOD thing. It allows students to form friendships/adjust to college life before going through what (for many) is a very emotional experience.

South Miami has many restaurants and shops that are walkable from campus or easily reachable by Uber/Lyft. The Metrorail has a university station that will zip kids to Target/Best Buy or Dadeland Mall in no time.

Is the scholorsgip and financial aid same cause I got scholorship but no letter for aid. And when I tried to contact umiami they said the aid is exausted and there will be no aid

Sup Guys! I made an account today to say that I’m a proud member of the class of 2023! Got accepted to the business school on the 22nd of March and I’ve finally decided that it’s all about the U! Gonna pay my deposit in a few days.

@ghost64 When did they say that? I met with FA in person on Sunday and asked that exact question and was told there is most certainly aid available.

@Propinquity4444 How much aid does Miami give on average? I saw multiple sites say that they meet 96% of demonstrated need but is that true?

@LightningIsBlue Wish I could help. They are holding out on us because of some forms they just happened to realize they needed. Hope that’s true about the 96%!

Sorry guys but some of the officials at u miami have no idea about their uni. I called and a girl picked up and said the aid was finished but when I called again one guy said my aid package will come on monday

@ghost64 They finally have all our extra paperwork they needed as of today. When I spoke to them this morning, they said a decision would be make within 2 weeks! That’s cutting it a bit too close. Hope it comes sooner than that. Good luck!

@Propinquity4444 i again got a mail in my gmail saying the fund is exausted and I cant afford the uni without aid and only scholorship. So O guess I wont be attending. But best of luck for your application mate.

@ghost64 I got the same mail one week ago, but when I called them they told me that my app was in review and I will be hearing soon. I dont know what they are doing. It is too late now. April 13 and no notice. However, I will suggest you to make a call to them and let us know what they say to you.

How is it bes to find a roommate at the U if you are not planning on going greek? Are there any major based floors or living groups?

Are there any residential living floors that are major or interest based?

@inglorious That’s weird. I wonder what’s going on in the financial aid office?
