University of Miami Class of 2023

No FAFSA submission here so still in the dark. We wait.

Update: It was UM that made the change. On the original FAFSA they found a discrepancy (After talking to financial office, we believe it was we entered the wrong amount for my pension) But not 100% sure. I will update the issue when I get home to check our previous FAFSA.

We got email EFC went up $900. They caught something that I didn’t realize…my work retirement plan for the state is tax deferred and I didn’t realize that. So, they added my contribution to that line of contributions to tax deferred pension plan.

@ufalumn1997 same here. Oh well at least it is correct now. I would rather it be correct now than bite us in the butt later.

@BigHerms I dind’t know they could change it, so this is eye opening! It is what it is…honest mistake. Didn’t make life changing difference for us.

I’m curious, would U Miami be tooling around and changing your FAFSA if they had no intention of accepting you? Or does Fin Aid work completely independently of Admissions?

Just saying if U Miami raised my EFC (for all schools to see) and then rejected my kid, I would be pretty furious.

@STEM2017 I 100% agree. But what I have seen is that they do work independently. We will see. Funny thing is my son who is a junior at Texas Tech has never made any changes to his FAFSA. But if it was incorrect, call me stupid, but I would want it to be correct. But I agree that if the change was made and then to be rejected would be pretty lousy.

@ufalumn1997 same here for Miami but it makes a big difference for South Carolina and Texas Tech.

@BigHerms Keep in mind that just because U Miami ā€˜corrected’ it, doesn’t mean it’s correct. I would do some research.

@STEM2017 I will. I am going to do more research when I get home. Still not sure how they came up with the number they did.

should I be worried they didn’t do anything??

^!!

@STEM2017 did you receive a notification on CaneLink about the fafsa ?

@FortniteBR No, I did not. But my FAFSA was pretty simple so there were probably no adjustments…or it means my S was rejected. LOL Either way, we’ll know soon enough.

@beachmom12 No need to worry. FAFSA adjustments are pretty rare.

We got emails from fafsa about the corrections. That’s how we knew.

Received email from fafsa. It was due to pension(not 401k) The correct amount was on the css and not on the fafsa. Miami made the correction to fafsa. From what I read and was told that this is a common mistake. IMO has nothing to do with admissions. They found a discrepancy and corrected it. Understand most colleges use FAFSA and FAFSA only. Miami uses CSS with FAFSA.

@stem2017 I researched and they were right in the catch. I didn’t realize florida retirement system contributions to a tax deferred pension. I thought it was it’s own separate thing. I pulled previous sar and the new one based on their changes and cross referenced the amounts. That’s how I figured out what the changes were.

FAFSA couldn’t tell us which college made changes or what changes they made…I thought that was weird.

@ufalumn1997 same here. That is what happened to us.

Are we thinking this Friday 1/25 or next 2/1??? I’m so anxious!!!

@BigHerms if you are also FRS, I did research and find that it is considered contributions to tax deferred. Bummer since we used to not have to contribute that 3%.
